Unable to play live feed over network
« on: April 02, 2018, 05:06:40 am »

I have a small problem which has been irritating me for a couple of years. I have spent 'many' hours on it but have got nowhere. Perhaps what I am trying to do is impossible. Any suggestions/explanations gratefully received. I should say I am not very knowledgeable about networking.

My music sits on an Intel NUC which drives my sound system using MC23. I control it remotely with eos mainly. No problems other than with Windows.

I use a laptop which has a copy of the database and also runs MC23. If I want to I can play on the laptop and send it to the NUC to play through the sound system. So far so normal, I think.

Media server generally runs on the laptop. If I use You Tube, say, I can run it through MC, using play live, and output on the laptop.  However when I send  it to the NUC I am always unable to get any output at all. The default Windows device is media server. What I see is - on laptop is loopback in playing now and also on NUC loopback in playing now. I have not been able to confirm that data is received by NUC and I have been completely unable to get a squeak out of it

So should I be able to send a live feed and play it through another MC? and if it is possible what am I missing?

Thanks in advance
John

Yes absolutely.........until 30 minutes ago!

So I installed MC23 64bit a couple of days ago - no problem. Today I found it was reverting to 32bit so I decided to delete old versions as I was happy with the new version. I uninstalled MC23 32 bit and MC21 32 bit.

I then found WDM was no longer installed. I then found the thread about needing to disable secure boot. I then discovered my laptop has no option for secure boot and the only reference to uefi is disabled (I suspect this is a red herring though).

I am now in a bad mood.   :(

Double check setup of WDM in MC23 64 bit.

Sorry Jim, not sure what you mean. WDM driver is definitely ticked in features. Anything else I can look at?

As I said the feature is ticked. I have restarted several times. The driver does NOT appear in the sound menu. Could a MC23 reinstall make a difference?

Did you set up audio in MC?  The wiki has a topic.

Can MC play audio?

Is MC running?  Run Media Server on Windows startup.

I then found WDM was no longer installed. I then found the thread about needing to disable secure boot. I then discovered my laptop has no option for secure boot and the only reference to uefi is disabled (I suspect this is a red herring though).

Sounds to me this is probably the issue here. If the WDM driver isn't being installed, chances are secure boot is likely enabled in the laptop's UEFI BIOS preventing the installation (due to the driver signing requirements with secure boot, which the WDM driver currently doesn't meet). Secure boot, depending on motherboard vendor, can be called different things. When you installed the 32-bit MC builds likely uninstalled the working WDM driver with it, hence this issue now.

What kind of laptop is it? How old is it? All the laptops I've used in the last couple years have secure boot enabled by default.

I had to restore my latest backed up library. Everything seems fine. Audio works fine and media server is running. All functions seem normal except WDM is nowhere to be seen

Sometimes a Windows update can remove WDM. MC won't reinstall it automatically. You must clear the checkbox, restart MC, check the box, and restart MC once again.

Thanks for responding AD

My laptop is 3 1/4 years old and up to date in every respect afaik. It is branded Lapchill but is a Clevo with American Megatrends BIOS under the covers.

I saw nothing approaching 'secure boot' in the accessible BIOS and msinfo shows BIOS mode as 'legacy'.

msinfo should report if Secure Boot is active, ie. for me it has an entry in the "System Summary" pane called "Secure Boot State".
If secure boot is not enabled, as far as I know Windows should accept the driver.

Thank you very much DJLegba  - you got it!

And thanks to you all, especially Jim for responding so early. A pleasant little excursion.

Now back to my original question............
