Do you have auto-import enabled? If so, try disabling it and see if it stops closing. If it does, there's a chance you might have bad files.

hmm actually i'm still getting the problem with jriver just closing for no reason sometimes.  It generally works ok but on the odd day i'll try to connect and as jriver has unexpected close i can't access through gizmo or panel unless i go to the pi and start up jriver again.  anyone else experience something similar?  I am definitely only using for music now. (after thought.... although the films are still in the library im just not playing them via the pi any more, thinking i should probably in the first instance remove those folders from the library will try that tonight, also could try reinstalling j river)

I used to have that occasionally, and I setup a systemd service to auto-restart (stickied at the top of the MC24 forum, but not in the MC25 forum for some reason).

A.D.'s right though, if you have auto-import enabled, I'd bet on a bad file crashing things.  Also make sure the thumbnailing priority is set to low.

If it's a client system rather than a server system, try turning off "auto-sync with server" just to test, as I sometimes see a memory leak with that setting that eventually crashes MC.

just an update, i was actually still having the same problem with it closing unexpectly, what has now solved the problem for me is putting the library on an external drive and plugging it into the pi's USB (the drive is plugged into a usb extension cable with a dedicated power supply so it doesn't drain any power from the pi.).  I then imported those files into jriver as opposed to from a network mapped drive from my NAS drive.  So using the external drive files i get no problems with it crashing so my problem must have been something relating to accessing music from a mapped via jriver.

Hi,

Thank you very much for the brilliant post. I have however unfortunately hit a snag. It seems that the JRiver repo is not available at the moment. I get the errors below

Err:1 http://dist.jriver.com/latest/mediacenter jessie/main armhf mediacenter24 armhf 24.0.78-armhf
  Connection failed [IP: 216.14.187.181 80]
E: Failed to fetch http://dist.jriver.com/latest/mediacenter/pool/main/m/mediacenter24/mediacenter24_24.0.78-armhf_armhf.deb  Connection failed [IP: 216.14.187.181 80]
E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?

Can you please help with this ?

Thank you

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply. However this was the result from the repo link which I downloaded in the guide. Also, I just now tried the normal dep repo listed here >> https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,115350.0.html

I get the same error for that.

Cheers...

Try manually downloading the last MC24 ARM .deb file from here and manually installing it.

Hi, Thanks for the advice. I did take that path but was stuck at installing this manually. was worried that the depencies may not be covered since im gonna install it with dpkg -i . (I'm a linux noob so not really sure what to do in this situ)

do you think it will be completed without any issues ?

Cheers..

Well.. The good news is, MC 24 has been installed with the errors. I can somehow listen to music :)

So that's a WIN !!!

Still though, quite a few errors remain and i think its best if I can get all the dependancies sorted. I tried doing manual install one by one, but that seems to be a bit of a tedious task.

(Not sure how to attach pics on the body so, please check the attached screenshot)

Cheers :)

So part of the issue is that you're trying to install an older version of Mediacenter, but the dependencies in mainline Raspbian have moved on.  You won't be able to resolve those dependency errors unless you either install an older version of Raspbian (probably stretch) or install a newer version of mediacenter (MC25).

Hi, thanks for the reply.

But is that the reason for the JRiver dependencies link to have stopped working ? The main link for MC 24 linux distros are gone...

I'm all for upgrading to the latest, however I have a master license for MC 24 so I would expect the links for the downloads to be live :)

Cheers..

I'm not sure what you mean by "depedencies link"?  Do you mean the repo link for JRiver itself? The dependencies for JRiver are provided by raspbian, not by JRiver, and they're not available because newer versions of Raspbian don't ship the versions of the dependencies that MC24 needs.

If you mean the JRiver repo link, I don't work for JRiver so I don't know why the repo would be down. Maybe bob can weigh in on that piece? In any case the last MC24 build is available for download in the last build thread, there's no advantage in setting up the repo at this point because there will be no further updates (which is the point of adding the repo to your sources.list)

Hi, yes. That's correct. Please excuse the wrong terminology.

What I meant was that the MC 24 latest build repo is no longer active. and because of that, the installation refuses to go forward and download the dependencies for me.

Failed to fetch http://dist.jriver.com/latest/mediacenter/pool/main/m/mediacenter24/mediacenter24_24.0.78-armhf_armhf.deb  Connection failed [IP: 216.14.187.181 80]

That's the error I'm facing.

Please check the attached as well. the link in there (under this page https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,115350.0.html)

doesnt work.

Cheers...

That's very odd, that link works fine here.  Have you tried it again it might have been temporarily down.  What happens when you click on that link in a web browser?

Just to be clear even if the link works it likely won't fix your dependency problems, which are not a result of using dpkg.

Hi,

It seems it was down for a while. But after I ran "sudo apt --fix-broken install" the installation downloaded all the required dependancies and healed itself.

Thanks all for the assistance :)

Cheers...

mwillems,
Could you please copy and paste your first post instructions to a new thread on the MC25 board?  We can then bring it up to date.

Thanks,

Jim

Thanks.  I missed that.  I just made it sticky and added the link to the new Getting Started with Linux thread.

Please feel free to add anything to that thread.  Awesome Donkey, too.

just to update, the troubles i was having with jriver closing unexpected is totally solved now.  i think what it was i hadn't run the line of code that does an update to jriver when i set it up for the first time.  since later running that line, jriver hasn't crashed once even with the heavyest tasks

Dear mwillems,

I tried installing JRiver on Raspberry Pi2 using your guide and am unable to. Am getting the following error message:

dpkg-deb: error: <decompress> subprocess returned error exit status 2
dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/chromium-browser_88.0.4324.187-rpt1_armhf.deb (--unpack):
cannot copy extracted data for './usr/lib/chromium-browser/chromium-browser' to '/usr/lib/chromium-browser/chromium-browser.dpkg-new': unexpected end of file or stream
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/chromium-browser_88.0.4324.187-rpt1_armhf.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I have tried "fix broken install" and also searched for solutions to /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1).

Not able to make it work.

My knowledge of linux is negligible, so will appreciate any guidance you can provide.

Many thanks!

So this guide is for a very old version of media center; have a look at the most recent quick start guide in the MC 27 forums and see if that helps.

That said, your error doesn't appear to be related to MC at all, but rather to installing chromium, which isn't any part of this install guide.  Did you manually try to install chromium?
