MC 24.0.20 (64 Bit) Error When Modifying Tags on ISO
« on: April 30, 2018, 12:24:11 pm »

Having an error when tagging ISO files:

"Media Center encountered errors while tagging or moving files. Check that the files exist, are not read-only, and are not in use by other programs."

The file exists, it's not read-only and it's not in use.  The odd bit is that is DOES actually make the change. I can get out of the tag and go back in and the change has actually been made. But it does throw that error. This is on all ISOs, not one particular file.

As a side note, I can go back to the same files in MC 23 and it modifies with no error.

I've just uninstalled and reinstalled MC 24-still no luck. Just to confirm - this is a repeatable error. So if no one else is getting this - could I get some guidance on where to look? I've checked the access, read/write status - all of the bits that would make sense. Even ran MC in administrator mode. This is NOT happening with FLAC files. Only SACD ISO files - and I can modify the same files in MC23 with no error box popping up.

Any help would be appreciated - and if I'm not providing sufficient information, please let me know.

Adding - when I reinstalled, I went back to the "stable" 24.0.19, so it isn't unique to 24.0.20.

Thanks

Make sure the ISO is not mounted when you do the tagging, if it is happening with just a test file. Or can you select a bunch of ISOs that are not mounted and it will give you the same problem?

Thanks for the response - ISO is definitely not mounted, I've never had to mount an SACD iso for it to play in MC. Video ISOs are a different story - and I run virtual clone in the background - so for the purposes of testing, I disabled it. Still get the error. This happens whether an individual ISO or multiple ISOs selected at once.

And, again, none of this in MC23 - so this was something introduced in MC24. I can go back to those exact same ISO files in MC23 and modify anything I like in the tags with no errors.

Did you set any sidecar options?

I have not set any "side car" options - as I'm not familiar with those. Is this something that needs to be done now in MC24 to be able to write SACD tags?

Thanks for the guidance Yaobing - I set to write to sidecar if internal storage was not supported for Audio - and now I don't get the error.

Just curious - is this something that was previously done automatically, because, as I said, didn't get any error writing tags to SACD ISOs in MC23. Did it automatically "sidecar" them or did it just not write anything to the file and only stored it in the database?

Thanks again for the help!

ISO files can not be tagged.  In the past we simply ignored the error.  In MC24 we made a lot of changes so we can allow writing tags in sidecar files.   We should continue to ignore tagging errors if sidecar is turned off, but I overlooked that.  I will change it so we will not get the pop up messages.

I wouldn't necessarily ignore the error - without it, I wouldn't have learned about this "sidecar" feature. Maybe clarify the error message? "Can't write to this file, would you like to set the sidecar option?" Something like this?

Just a thought.

On another note - the majority of my library are SACD iso files. Any easy way for the system to go through and write sidecar files for all of the ones that don't currently have them?

Thanks again for your help!

As long as sidecars are enabled, wouldn't Update tags (from library) do this?

Would have to agree about the friendly error message too.

I'd try it on a single file/ISO first (I'd also make a backup of the file/ISO first too, just in case). ;)

Also make sure you're using the latest build, 24.0.25, which has a few more fixes for SACD ISOs and sidecars.

I have no clue about “sidecars”, or it’s function, but it worked.

I have no clue about “sidecars”, or it’s function, but it worked.

In a nutshell, sidecar files are external files which store metadata for files that otherwise don't support metadata. Take a SACD ISOs for example: as Yaobing said, they can't be tagged so it's not possible to write metadata to the SACD ISO file(s). DFF files are another example of files that don't support metadata. Sidecars are a workaround for that issue, as it will write the metadata to an external file that's stored (ideally) alongside the ISO/DFF/etc. file(s).

Donkey, yes.

What can I say, I'm stubborn. :P

In MC 24.0.26 the error seems gone.
Thanks a lot.
I have selected "save in sidecar if internal tagging is not supported", but I can't find the sidecar xml anywhere. I tried modifying a tag and update tags from library. Where is the sidecar xml stored?

Sidecars are created when you save tags, i.e. Update Tags (from library), or when you edit a field.  They are saved in the same folder as the media files themselves.
