not able to quit MC24
« on: August 30, 2018, 05:17:21 pm »

Hi there,

if I quit the program the window closes but I'm not able to start MC again because the process itself remains running.
Since almost 4 years of using every version of MC this is the same behavior and I always have to kill the process. This is really annoying because its running on a headless mac.

I was really trying to chill on this problem and looking forward for every update to fix it. But now it starts frustrating me when finding the same bug in the latest MC24 again. Am I really the only one with that problem ?

Thanks for any suggestion.

regards

It's possible that you have MC set to run as "server" and that the server portion keeps running after you exit the client.  Do you see an MC icon in the upper right area of the mac status bar?  You'll also want to check the startup options in MC at:

Tools > Options > Startup > mac startup > (check setting here)

I always wonder with these kinds of issues what the person is trying to accomplish.  If it's a headless Mac, that implies it's probably a media server of some sort.  Why do you want to shut MC down and then start it later?  Is there a reason you don't just leave it running all the time?

I allow myself to enter the discussion.
I'm wondering what's the difference between Media Center and Media Server?
I share my library with two other Macs (on the same network) without opening Media Server.

The mode I'm talking about puts an MC icon in the upper right hand status area of the mac.  Once that icon is there, you can close MC with File > Quit, or press the red button on the window to close it.  MC will close, but the Media Server keeps running, which means it can serve content to MC clients just as if the MC main window was open.

I think it's mostly cosmetic because I don't think it does anything different than just turning on Media Network and leaving the main MC window open.  You can try it with Tools > Advanced Tools > Media Server .  Clicking the icon in the status area will let you do a few things with it.

I took the opportunity to ask my question, this may not be the right place.
I managed very well to communicate between Macs inside the same network, but not from outside. The firewall is not enable, I would think that's enough. I have an Airport Extreme router and I can not see anything more to do.

Hi Brian,

you nailed it. I was´t aware of this startup option :o
I always thought it was a bug but this completely change my impression of stability to positive. Thank you so much !!

Regarding your question:
I´m running my mac primary headless but its also connected to my TV.
I configured the whole system to work just with some touchpad gestures (NO keyboard) but above all with some remote functions via my mobile (If you ask why ... I hate to change batteries every 3 weeks)
And if I wanted to restart the system I always needed to turn on TV and find the process in the activity monitor to kill MC.

Thanks to you now everything is working well !

Please read the Network Access topic on our wiki.  You may need to tell your router to forward packets on certain ports to a specific machine.
