Id version changelogs and announcements
« on: October 02, 2018, 02:11:09 pm »

This is the latest update for the IdNUC and IdPi. To download, run 'Check for updates' from the Id main menu. Please only post bugs relating to the new build here.  Please start a new thread for anything requiring discussion. Non-bug posts will be deleted.

General Version information:
Updates are different for the IdNUC vs the IdPi.
The IdPi4 builds and newest IdNUC's (NUC7) are running on a newer version of the Debian linux operating system.
They show up as
Id 25.0.x
The previous builds for the IdPi and IdNUC (32 bit) show up as
Id 24.0.x

The build of MediaCenter for all IdNUC's and IdPi's since we transitioned to MC24 are independent of the Id build version.

IdNUC users have the ability to upgrade to the current Id version by downloading a USB image and running an update. There is not yet an option to upgrade a IdNUC from Id 24.0.x to the just released 25.0.x.

The IdPi doesn't have a way for the user to upgrade the base debian OS from the original version to the current version.

IdNUC (NUC6 and below):
Id: 24.0.17     Media Center: 26.0.107-5     Engen: 1.0.69

IdNUC (NUC7 and above):
Id: 25.0.11     Media Center: 26.0.107-2     Engen: 1.0.69

IdPi:
Id: 24.0.18     Media Center: 26.0.107-2-jessie     Engen: 1.0.69

IdPi4:
Id: 25.0.11     Media Center: 26.0.107-2     Engen: 1.0.69

Change log:

12/3/2020 (MC version 26.0.107-2 for all Id models except NUC6 26.0.107-5 and Id base version updates)
  • Received network data network timeout was too fast for many dynamically transcoded streams and slow  streaming sites. Most notably when acting as a DLNA renderer.
  • When a network connection isn't present, the Id would go into network configuration mode until either configured or rebooted, now that will timeout after 15 minutes and reboot again. This allows the Id to automatically handle a power outage or network signal loss.

5/15/2020 (MC Version 26.0.80 for all Id models)
  • See Media Center 26 Linux change log for a full list of changes.

2/25/2020 (MC Version 26.0.26 for the IdNUC (NUC7 and Pi4 only))
3/2/2020 (MC Version 26.0.26 for all NUC models)
  • NEW: Updated Media Center to version 26.
  • NEW: Added the ability to copy and paste images.
  • NEW: (Pi4) Added a Chromium plugin so features like Cloudplay will work.

12/1/2019 (MC Version 25.0.123 for the IdNUC (pre-NUC7) only)
  • Fixed: The chromium plugin browser wouldn't run because some packages were missing.

11/14/2019 (Id base package updates to IdNUC 24.0.16, IdPI 24.0.17, IdNUC (NUC 7) 25.0.9, IdPi4 25.0.9)
  • Fixed: External media mounting fixes.
  • Fixed: Shutdown saving fixes.
  • NEW: IdPi4 adds temperature monitoring to the resource monitor.
  • Numerous Media Center updates (See the change log in Linux version for more details). Note: Not all changes will apply to the Id's.

11/5/2019 (Media Center 25.0.114)
  • NEW: IdNUC Using chromium plugin for the internal web broser.
  • NEW: The cloudplay user accounts are now functional on the IdNUC's.
  • Numerous Media Center updates (See the change log in Linux version for more details). Note: Not all changes will apply to the Id's.

2/8/2019 (Id 24.0.11)
  • NEW: Added a resource monitor display to the desktop. Start and stop it from the right-click menu.

2/5/2019 (Media Center 24.0.75)
  • Numerous Media Center updates (See the change log in Linux version 24.0.74 for more details). Note: Not all changes will apply to the Id's.
  • IDNuc 24.0.10 adds localization to the system menu.

1/5/2019 (Media Center 24.0.72-2)
  • NEW: Many network fixes.
  • NEW: Improved Radio Paradise support.
  • Numerous Media Center updates (See the change log in Linux version 24.0.72 for more details). Note: Not all changes will apply to the Id's.

Thank you for your reply.

What I found that fixed the instability and slowness on my iPad was to reduce the number of thumbnails from 200 per page (a ridiculous default for a mobile device) to 25. Repainting of the thumbnails and navigation are almost immediate.

One last bit of input on the current version - the "Z" is on the line below the "A" rather than across from the "A". (A formatting error).

Sorry, used to be an embedded GUI designer and can't stop QA'ing.

Hi, I can play Radio Paradise and Radio JRiver; but none of the other streaming channels play any sound... (and for BBC you need Flash, which seems not to install/work).
I also had hard time to "Manage my YouTube Account" under Services: I obtained a key, and entered it (only possible when first closing the browser), but then nothing seems to register... I I again select Manage Account, it just relaunches the same web page interface with Google.
    Thanks for advice,

The streaming channels on non-windows machines are in a state of development.

The next update will have improved Radio Paradise and Radio JRiver support.

I don't know if this is a bug, but I just tried to download Id MC 24.0.72-2 using 12-Enter, but my Id didn't update. It's still stuck on 23.0.102. Should I post this someplace else?

Yes, but the lines of text were moving very quickly. I will try it again and take some photos when I see errors. Look at Error 2 at bottom :

That just means it can't find a credential file for a network share you setup from the disk menu, it won't affect updating.

There is probably an error trying to update to 24.0.9. Can you try to snap a picture of it while trying to upgrade?

I previously tried to upgrade from Panel whilst running in GUI mode. I rebooted in headless text mode and with a keyboard plugged into the Id NUC and used option 12 to upgrade. On reboot it has now updated to 24.0.9. So all sorted.

I just performed this update, and while it seems to have worked (jremote finds MC and libraries), I cannot get to the idpi via vncviewer.
I first get "authentication error", and when I hit enter, it presents a demand for "the authentication expected by the vnc server".
My regular login password to the idpi doesn't work.  The access code for the idpi doesn't work.  Then I hit "too many security errors", and have to power cycle the idpi.
What is it looking for?  I'm completely stuck at the moment.
    TIA for any help.

The default remote connection password (without quotes) is: "remote"
If this doesn't work, you can change or reset it with option 16 from the Id main menu, but you'll need to either connect a monitor or use Panel with full authentication.

    Hi all,
I just tried to upgrade my NUC5CPYH to the latest Media Center Id firmware.

I got problems during first update step.

1 to check/repair the Id file system.

    Code: [Select]
fsck.ext2: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/p1
    Possibly non-existent device?

4 to Restore the Id firmware didn't worked.

    Code: [Select]
Enter the name of the drive to re-install to. (default = ):
fdisk: cannot open /dev/: Is a directory

I already updated the bios to the latest version but got the same problem.

    Can anyody help?

Did you change any of the bios settings??

    Yes I'm booting with USB.
And no I did not change any of the bios. But I could set to default if it's your (jriver) default setting too.
The nuc itself, starts farther without any problems.

btw: I tried to upgrade firmware with following versions:
    id3repair4.iso
    idXrepair7.img

Re: New Id Update Available (2/8/2019) - Multichannel Playback issues
    « Reply #32 on: February 22, 2019, 05:58:46 am »

Hallo Bob, Brad and all at JRiver
Successfully updated my ID which I bought last autumn to current build:
IdNUC: Id: 24.0.11     Media Center: 24.0.75     Engen: 1.0.69

Since that update, Multichannel File Playback fails.
I play from IDNUC per HDMI straight to an Onkyo Receiver. Other Multichannel sources (Sat TV, SACD player, BluRay) all work fine to the same audio system. Swapped cables/HDMI ports to be sure I dont have a problem with the cable or HDMI port on the receiver. All multichannel devices work perfectly on all ports except the ID. The ID is unable to deliver Multichannel on whatever HDMI port it is connected to. Stereo playback is fine. So, for me it is pretty clear that the problem is with the ID, or with my Setup of the ID.

Before the last update, playback was perfect. The system played 5,1 source files, and played 2,1 for all 2 channel sources, (and sounded great, BTW).

    ID Settings
PLUG HW CARD=PCD.DEV=3[ALSA]..... HDMI0 Hardware Device with all Software conversions. (also tried all other HDMI0 devices listed. No difference)
    PCM Output Format = Automatic
Output DSD Files in native Format is UNchecked
DSP and Output Format: Output encoding = None
Sample Rates: 44.100, 48.000, 96,000 (all compatible with my Amp)
    Channels: 5,1 Channels
    "JRSS Mixing" selected
"For Stereo Source only mix to 2,1" is selected.
    No other DSP effects selected
    Subwoofer = Silent
    No memory playback
    No bitstreaming
    Prebuffering = 6 Seconds
Silence at Startup = 3 Seconds (tried various others, no change, I went back to my standard settings before the update)
JRiver Bit Exact Dithering is selected
File Format I want to play is multichannel FLAC, Multichannel DSF, and BluRay Rips converted to Multichannel FLAC
All the above were playing perfectly until the last update.

I am playing from the local Harddisc in the ID, using mostly JRemote, but also sometimes JRiver Panel. The harddisk is about 50% full, 831GB used.
I have data backed up to a NAS and can play files from that source over the wired network also, no difference.

If I take a windows or MAC notebook install JRiver and link to the library on the ID, I can play multichannel directly via HDMI using the same HDMI cable as the ID normally uses to the same Port and multichannel playback is perfect. So conclusion is Files are fine, network is fine, sound system is fine. Multichannel playback from the ID does not work any more.

On top of that, since the update, stereo playback sometimes halts for  2-20 seconds, and then continues.......Cannot identify anything to explain that. Cable network is fine. Wireless network is disabled on the ID, network traffic is nothing, and HDMI playback should not be affected by anything on the network anyway. so I am at a loss to explain what is going on.

I am getting more than a little frustrated because I cannot find the reason for this behaviour, and have been fooling around for a couple of weeks now. I would be very grateful for any help you may feel able to offer. It would be nice just to be able to sit down and listen to music again and not worry about this stuff. That is basicaly why I purchased the ID in the first place: to simplify things.

    « Reply #33 on: February 22, 2019, 08:22:24 am »

    Subwoofer = Silent
    No memory playback
    No bitstreaming
    Prebuffering = 6 Seconds

    Hi Mike,
    Thanks for the detailed report.
I would use one of the hdmi: or hw:.
Plughw is a simplification that removes control of the stream from MC and leaves it up to the alsa driver.

Can you try function 10 from the Id Menu with MC in stopped mode? It will report back the number of channels supported for each device.

Also, we just tested it here and it works fine BUT if you have your monitor plugged into the amp and that monitor has 2 channel speakers on it we noticed here that the amp (Sony STR-DH520) passes through that information to the Id and it reduces the number of channels and sample rate to the monitors audio device.

We think that means that if you want to keep the monitor connected, you either have to disable the audio on the monitor or the pass-through from the amp to the monitor somehow or use a monitor without speakers.

To test this without rebooting you need to disconnect the monitor from the amp and unplug and replug the hdmi cable on the Id so it renegotiates with the amp. Then you can check function 10 on the main menu again.

Thanks for your messages. Sorry for the delay in replying, but this one has been occupying me for weeks.
I finally got the Id to play multi channel files again.

Your second reply was decisive: HDMI connectivity was making a mess of things.

    On my Onkyo Receiver:
when rebooting the Id, if the Receiver is powered on AND the Samsung TV is powered on, the ID boots up and will only play stereo - although TV Loudspeakers are deactivated.
when rebooting the Id, if the Receiver is powered OFF (standby!) but the Samsung TV is powered on, the Id boots up and will only play stereo, when the receiver is later powered up.
when rebooting the Id, if the Receiver is Powered off, AND the Samsung TV is powered off, the id will play "source number of channels" no issues whatsoever. I can switch on the TV AFTER the ID has completed booting and that has no effect whatsoever on the number of channels the ID will play.

You cannot imagine how long it took to finally work out what is necessary to make the Id work as it should.
(I also tried deactivating all the automatic stuff between TV and Receiver HDMI, that made no difference to the above statements).
It seems that a connection is somehow made to the output device of the receiver during boot - here the Samsung TV - and that device's number of available channels becomes the maximal available to the Id irrespective of whether the internal speakers are active or not.

Thanks for putting me on the right track.

    Hi Guys,
Continued congrats on the MC product - I'm using an Id.
I've brought the topic of MC 25 up before and been advised that the Id will always lag the most up to date version of MC, yet also told that the Id is NOT a secondary product.

On the same theme, can we expect the same product discounts available on other platforms for new version introductions on the Id?

I'm a big advocate of MC but a tad disappointed that my chosen platform does indeed seem to be of secondary importance.

I'm sure this will be taken as positive feedback, I'd also like to see if other share my view.

The Id doesn't need discounts for new versions of Media Center, since no upgrade purchases are required. It'll get such updates for free.

For the second part, we've answered this in another thread not too long ago, but the jist of it is this: The Id lags a bit behind not because we ignore it or treat it as a secondary product, but because we have to ensure it's stable. If MC on a Desktop PC breaks, you can just install an old version, and everything will be fine again. If we mess up the Id, in the worst case you might have to send it back for fixing, or do other complicated recovery operations. Due to these concerns, updates for it are not quite as rapid or often.

MC25 is not yet considered "stable" on Linux, which the Id is based on, and is still experiencing some issues that prevent even starting evaluating it for an Id update.

    Hi Hendrik,
Thanks for your reply, which has made things clearer for me, I don't recall this from the previous time I brought this up.

I was not aware that MC25 was not considered stable on Unix. I do appreciate the difficulties of recovering MC functionality on an ID.
So I'll look forward an MC25 update (for free ?) soon after its stable on Unix then.

    Great work guys

I am looking for an "appliance" to host JRiver to be able to select the playlists, artists, albums, etc. from my phone and send the digital signal into my very expensive DAC. Not a project or technical build and support your own Raspberry PI or similar. And, fighting with networking and update issues with a Windows PC and then my wife trying to use it is too much. I thought this device was going to do it https://jriver.com/Id/ ... but! I have 5TB of CD quality and higher resolution music. I just want a bare bones system with a small internal drive and then plug in the large drive in a USB slot. Is that possible?

Yes. The IdNUC 300 is the cheaper NUC Id model with a 240 GB SSD. You can connect an external hard drive to it and import media files from it.

    Hi Brad,

I notice the IdPi's have received an update to MC 27. What is the plan for the older Nuc's?

Will there be a new repair image to update the OS and a later build ?

    That's a great question.
There were a lot of changes to the Id firmware when we started shipping the IdPi4 and NUC7 hardware that pretty much make it impossible to move those to MC27.
All IdPi4 and NUC7 builds can do an OTA update to MC27.
I have been working on a repair image for the NUC7 Id's that would install on all of NUC Id's back to the original.
It's pretty much there but not foolproof yet. I used it to update my NUC5 to current but I had to do some hand corrections. It on the todo list to finish but there are some things ahead of it like the linux DnD which I'm currently working on.

    Hi,
my Id displays the Id and MC versions displayed but MC is crashing about 1 minute after reboot. I can still see the text menu, but the UI of MC dissapears and I also no longer connect to the Id from my iPad or iMac. I do see some error messages when rebooting but this is displayed only really briefly - impossible to see what errors are displayed. Can you please advice...?

Connect to the Id in gui mode remotely with VNC or Remote desktop (or reboot the Id into gui mode with a monitor and keyboard on the Id)
Right-click on the desktop and bring up the System Status Monitor.
    Is your / partition full?

The System Status Monitor is displayed slightly outside my monitor screen, so can't see all the descriptions. But all the metrics are very low (CPU at 1% for instance), with one at 23% (but can't see what for). So I don't think that my partition is full, as it would indicate 100% I assume...? Note that I store nothing on the Id except MC; I have all my files on a NAS.

You should be able to scroll the screen horizontally to see the full values.
There are 2 storage partitions, they are
    /  the OS partition.
    and
    /export where media is stored.
The one we are concerned with is the / partition.
If that is full for some reason (a mistake with move/copy/rename dialog for example) MC will display the behavior you describe.
