JimH: Does MC require Windows Media v9?
« on: May 25, 2003, 09:21:35 pm »

JimH -

1.  Running MC after a reboot, no other applications running.

2.  Open MC and add a new library Test where I have a copied a few tracks for testing  :)

3.  Import the files click the STB (Send to Bar aka Drop Zone - it would be nice if Tooltip matched the help file) and add a new playlist "Test".

4.  Drag a file from the Content pane to the STB and a dialog pops up asking me if I want install "Windows Media v9''.

5.  Now that I know better I ctl-alt-del and kill MC.

6.  If I click "No" MC goes into a whole routine of "Downloading Internet resource/JRReader failed to connect" and by the time I kill the process and restart MC the library has a mass of non-music files from my D: drive.  (Hell! its even pulling files out of the Recycle Bin.)

I've gotten this same dialog at other times in MC and told it "No" without MC having a snit fit.  I'm not even sure what "Windows Media v9" is, I'm assuming its the latest version of "Windows Media Player".  If MC's functionality depends on v9 being installed then it should say so.

I have to admit that MC has some nice features over MJ but IMHO it should still be in beta.

It's my understanding that MC requires Windows Media Player 7.1 or higher to be installed in order to play any Windows Media formats (.wma, .wmv, etc).

I thought that changed and you could download just the encoder files etc...

Hi Zevele - How are you?

I have Wimp 6.4 on my system and MC installed three encoder plug-ins WM, WM Lossless, and WM VBR.  What OS are you running?

I downloaded Wimp v9 and I may as well install it to see if that fixes the drag & drop problem.  I just tried to play a WMA file and got the Install v9 dialog, when I said "No" MC crashed.

I suspect that Win98 SE is missing some core routines that these plug-ins rely on.  I know Office XP installed some XP libraries in order to run under Win98.  As I said in my original post, if this is the case then MC should refuse to run until it is installed or at least popup a dialog when use start it that you are missing libraries.

thanks

well it should not crash, but it may be trying to send you the files from Microsoft that are required to play windows media files.

if you keep saying no, you will never get it to play.

Microsoft controls the format so you will need to install somthing from them to get it to work.

if not use another format

Kingsparta -

I only have a handful of wma files but I instaled Wimp9 to see if it would fix the drag & drop problem.  It didn't.

I can now play wma files and will assume the other Wimp plug-ins would work if I had a use for them.  The drag & drop problem is a killer tho.

I still get the "Downloading Internet resource" window and the "JRReader cannot find" dialog pointing to "URL... hob_digitalradio.asx" if I just click "OK" the process continues and JRReader throws another error pointing to a URL .asx file.

thanks

i think tomorrow i will need to download some windows media files and test it.

but i have not heard of this problem before now.

it could be just users never use windows media.

is it also posable the files are secure windows media files? that may have another effect on the program and system.

Sorry, you don't get it.  The Drag & Drop problem is with any file.  Since installing Wimp9 I don't get the Wimp install prompt just this

If I remember correctly, in Win98, when I tried playing wma files in MC and only had the wmp9 codecs installed, but not the wmp9 player, MC wouldn't play the files.

JimH or Matt -

I don't know whether this is about Wimp or MC but to recap:
Quote
MC goes into a whole routine of "Downloading Internet resource/JRReader failed to connect" and by the time I kill the process and restart MC the library has a mass of non-music files from my D: drive.  (Hell! its even pulling files out of the Recycle Bin.)

I assume that JRReader is your program and that files with an "asx" extention have something to do with Wimp.

This only happens if I try and Drag&Drop to a playlist or the STB.  I can send files thru the context menu and use D&D to move nodes in the Tree View.  D&D works on my system and with MC from Explorer.  I can drag to Playing Now and to a Playlist from Explorer.

Here's my sysinfo, please respond.

I have no idea what is happening.  Sorry.

Try clearing your temp files.  In IE, go to Tools/Internet Options/Temp Internet files and delete.
