Can one 'issue' be addressed in the short term? JRiver for Android currently seems to import all media files on at least the internal storage. This is good... except it also imports .wav files used for notifications in applications. For example, JRiver for Android picks up on the two .wav files Hangouts uses for notification sounds (they're called Hangouts Call and Hangouts Message). IMO, it should exclude these - it adds them to the Unassigned artist field at the end of the library.

I have noticed on my devices, JRiver creates files in two or three folders. Are these database/cache files?

So when my database grows, these files wil increase also? Or JRiver will have some maintenance/optimization for bloating to many files.

Thanks!

I think the audio needs to be in the Music folder on the microSD card.  You could test that by putting a couple of files there.

We intend to improve this.

Thanks, Jim.

it also imports all my camera pictures and videos from the sdcard which i'll never need in the player.

Yes, it's being worked on now. It actually kind of works already on the latest version. It works best if the playlists are on a secondary storage device. It can import playlists from the primary storage, but at the moment, they need to be in the default Music folder if they're stored on the primary storage device. Keep in mind that Media Center does not import .pla playlists.

"Secondary storage device"... as in an SD card on my device (phone in this case)?  And primary storage being my phone's "non-removeable" storage (/music).

I was using the Android app today and thought of a few things I'd really like to see and wanted to get them written down.  Most of these are notification based requests.  I'm curious to know if these are possible, on the roadmap, unlikely, etc.

  • The pause/ play response time should be improved.  The app feels unresponsive just because of this.  I read a few posts of new users who said the app only played for a second, then they realized this was because they hit play, nothing happened, and hit pause, both of those responses were delayed so they got a second of music before the pause was recognized.
  • I really don't like that the front page no longer fits on my screen.  This changed when the header row, with About and Quit, was introduced.  The main view, of 6 tiles, should fit on the screen, as long as the screen is a 'normal' phone size.
  • I want to see the audio path of the file.  What format is it, how is it being converted, how big is the file, etc
  • I want to be able to swipe the app closed.  This works, except the notification icon stays around.
  • The notification still says JRiver for Android, even though the app says JRiver.
  • The notification should really only be triggered when I started playback.  I get that you probably want it to hang around if you pause, but if there was a distinction between pause and stop, you could do this (pause keeps it open, stop closes the notification).
  • The Play/Pause/Next in the notification should be icons that flex (ie click play and it turns to pause, click pause and it turns to play).  There's no reason for both a play and a pause.
  • The app should show a more relevant icon, the round circle should be the JRiver logo flattened.  I assume you have a flatted logo, but I did the attached in 5 minutes just to show what I mean.

Thanks!

I have been using JRiver for Android for a couple of months now.

One issue I am running into is that even when music is removed from the library, it stays listed in JRiver.

The other one was discussed before. It does not look like the latest release allows to play music from the /music directory on the SD card. Correct? Is there a timeframe for when this will be fixed ?

It does, but you'll probably have to clear the app's data and cache to reset it to get it working. In my case, I had to.

Just came back from vacation to try the newest version.

Via USB to dedicated DAC

Android TV: Q10Pro w 10tb WD drive -> LH Labs Revive (USB Reclocker) -> LH Labs Geek Pulse Infinity + LPS4

Phone: LG V20 -> LH Labs Revive (USB Reclocker) -> LH Labs Geek Pulse Infinity + LPS4

Comments:
1. It WORKS!
2. As some have noted, not all of my music are reflected on the database (mostly 44.1/96/192 flac, DSD 64/128/256 files, DXD wav)
3. Could not see my video files. Images yes, videos no.
4. On playing different files, could see in my DAC that is constantly playing at 192khz. JRiver is using the ASL? You need to get around this to have better SQ. UAPP, Neutron MP, HibyMusic have done this.
5. On my Android TV, stutter occurs (processor dependent?) when playing DSD64 and up. Increase buffers?

Via Smartphone only
Comments:
1. It WORKS!
2. As above could not see my video files and some of my music files.
3. Stutters when playing DSD128 and up (definitely processor dependent...) same with DXD wav. Please have option to increase buffers.

Others:
1. Plays 44.1/96/192 Flacs, DSD 64 and DSD 128/256 (with stutters/pause), DXD wav (w/ stutters/pause)
2. Saw entry and playlist of .ISO sacd file. But JRiver crashed when played.
3. Need Folder view.

These are for now will update when have more time.

Michael

Please describe the usb cable that connects the android device to the usb reclocker. Is it a OTG usb cable?

RECEIVED ANSWER VIA PM: Michael says "It's just a regular usb-c to usb-a cable adapter. No special settings have been done to both devices."

It does work after I clear the app's data and it resolved both issues. Thanks.

I have never been able to play my 24/192 flac music files through my good sound system in my living room because JRiver MC is installed on my office PC. My office is too far away from the living room to string cables between them (if I was a bachelor I probably would have).

With the JRiver Android app installed on my smart phone, I can now play 24/192 flac music files through my good sound system in the living room. The sound quality (SQ) is really good.

There was a bit of a learning curve to get this working so I thought I would pass on what I learned.

My setup is:

Samsung S7 phone ---> usb OTG cable ---> DAC ---> powered speakers

I use JRemote running on a tablet to control what is playing through the speakers while I sit on the couch. The S7 runs unattended behind the TV.

I first tried playing the music directly to the powered speakers through the phones' headphone port. This worked but SQ was poor. I knew that I needed to stream digital audio through the phone's usb port to a DAC to have any hope of getting good SQ. I also needed to be able to charge the phone while simultaneously streaming through the same port! I also needed to have my S7 in my pocket and not dedicated to playing music.

In an effort to find alternative solutions, I next tried the above setup with some old tablets I have, and they would not work. It turns out they were not OTG capable. The usb OTG cable is an essential component in my setup. I found an Android app called "USB OTG Checker" that will tell you whether your Android devices' usb port is OTG capable.

So in the short term, I am stuck with the above setup. The SQ of the music as streamed through my S7 is really good, but I can't charge the S7 while it is streaming music. I have made enough progress with this setup to whet my appetite for a permanent solution. I have started searching for cheap tablets that have a charging port separate from the usb port and one or two OTG capable usb ports. The Simbans TangoTab 10" tablet is in the ballpark. Currently $135 on Amazon.

You don't need a tablet/phone that has two ports. Just one that supports acting as a USB host device at the same time it is being charged. Apparently that can be done through one OTG port, but finding both a device that will do it, and the software, and a cable that properly supports it, can be a bit of a challenge. Mis-information is rife. So do your research well.

The player has been getting better but it has a few things that have irked me.

My usage on android is:
Sync to SDcard:/Music/[Album] -> shuffle all Car / Gym (via bluetooth head unit / headphones)
  • Bluetooth connection doesn't take focus from other music apps very well in my car. Bluetooth over all isn't really there for me to drop samsung music.
  • Audio folder icon/lists with an option to play all / shuffle all. (I thought this was already in Android but maybe i was in panel?)
  • Audio folders icon that allows me to blacklist a folder from my local DB.
  • The service doesn't seem to have an easy time getting focus from the OS for me. Things like stopping other music playback don't seem to work correctly.
  • I would like a minimum of a single tile widget that's just a play/pause button for my home screen. Having to pull down the notification list, then pull down jriver then press play, then wait is a really long process.
  • Long press actions earlier. (Play all artists, albums, this folder, etc)
  • To make use of more features i would like to be able to sync my ratings and smart lists as well to android. If it was able to merge data with my local server by identifying local files on the server it would be amazing.

Bugs:

1. With the new update, i connot play music in JRiver anymore on my Android TV. It starts for a 2-3 seconds without playing sounds and stops.
2. ISO Sacd disc image are recognized but when attempting to play the app crashes.
3. As posted by others, its annoying that I have to wait 3-4 seconds everytime I have to play music.
4. No video

Needs Improvement:
Very good sound rendering BUT still using ASL (How do I know this? My DAC displays 192K no matter what i throw at it). UAPP, HibyMusic, NeutronMP, Onkyo MP just to mention a few have done this (bypass ASL) for years.

Wants:
Folder View. File explorer to play media. Not all files are imported or cataloged.

Keep it up!

I recently download the Android App and found one thing I would like to see changed.  There is an "Alphabet Slider" at the top of the list of Songs/Artists/Albums.  But as soon as I scroll, or use the slider, the slider disappears because it is always at the top of the page.  The slider should always stay in view.  Also, when I hold my phone vertically, the slider should be on the side I can more accurately scroll.

Thanks!

I tried to buy it on Google App Store, but it informs me that my Android device for the app is not recognized. My Sony KD-65ZD9 Android TV has been updated to Android 8.0 (Oreo) at the End of January 2019. Is JRiver for Android not supported for Android 8 (Oreo) yet?

Which Android version(s) is/are supported on JRiver for Android?

JRiver for Android is compatible with Android 5.0 and later. However, JRiver for Android is not officially support on Android TV. Support for Android TV will likely come after video playback is implemented.

I am confused, because I attempted to download and install it based on release information for v24.0.10 of JRiver for Android:

24.0.10 (12/11/2018)
1. NEW: Added support for Android TV devices.

Initial support, but it's not listed as Android TV compatible, so it's not downloadable from the Play Store on an actual Android TV box. To get it working right now, you'd have to sideload the APK file, which for a paid app isn't easy to obtain so it's much, much easier to wait until it's fully Android TV compatible and in the Play Store on Android TV boxes.

Is there any timeline planned for a final version of JRiver for Android TV? In other words, by when can we expect such version?

Hmmm, like Brad said, likely after video playback support is added. And when that happens is anyone's guess... I suppose when it's done? *shrugs*

Hi all, I would like to plead with you to make JRiver for Android available for sale from your own servers instead of just the Play Store. I have no problem giving you guys the money. You continue to deserve and earn it. Please give us an alternative to the Play Store!

The Play Store is the logical distribution method and logical way to update the app as well. It makes little sense to NOT use the Play Store in this case, in my opinion. Not using the Play Store would make everyone's lives more difficult for seemingly no reason at all. Besides, with the app being purchased from the Play Store, removing it now would just be a slap in the face to the customers who paid for the app already.

Perhaps I could have worded it better. I am asking for an additional method to purchase the software along side the Play Store, not to abandon the Play Store. I can see that many people use the Play Store (and I respect that decision), but many also avoid it it for a wide variety of reasons (privacy, ethical, practical, ideological, etc), despite using the Android OS. Its parent company has not always been a good actor. As always with these topics: if you don't feel it, you probably don't understand.

JRiver has always charted its own path. I love that this company is not one of the "big guys", and it is a primary reason I have been here since pretty much the beginning. I trust that I am not alone in that. I don't want to derail this thread. We can move this to its own thread if necessary, though I don't have much more to say on it.

All I am asking is: I want to be able to use my existing JRiver account to buy this promising software. I will even pay extra. Please, take my money!

I loaded the JRiver Android app from the Play Store yesterday after loading the new MC25 on my Mac.  I can't load anything on my work PC anymore without exceptions from like the CEO so likely MC24 will be my last unless you have one that's browsed based.

I tried the import and most of the time I get no response.  It will play a few files I have resident on the device but mainly I access an external HDD with built in WiFi that contains a very large library of music and video.  The audio is in FLAC and many are high res (24/96 to 24/192).

I see you'll support DLNA rendering but it didn't appear to allow me to link to my device or the import can't manage that.  When will this be available?  When will higher res support be available?  Primarily that's an ease issue.  I don't want to convert to multiple formats.

The original post here lists "playlists" under Future Plans.  I see now I can create a playlist from playing now....  but do future plans include importing MC playlists? …. Hope so!
Not just importing MC Playlists but actually importing the code structure for dynamic playlists. To me, dynamic playlists are the most important feature of MC and what makes it my absolute PC music player of choice. If I could get that same functionality for the songs stored on my phone JRiver for Android would become my must use player on my phone. I'm hoping for future development in this and other areas soon.

What version of Android is your phone running? Right now, there seems to be a bug with playing 24-bit files on older versions of Android.

JRiver for Android supports DLNA for playback, but right now, it cannot import files over a network. However, import on JRiver for Android is still a work in progress.

This is already possible. In Media Center 25, you have the option to export smartlists. Just right-click on a smartlist and select Export Playlist... Then choose the option "JRiver Smartlist XML". You can transfer the smartlist files to your phone and JRiver for Android will import it if you put it in a folder called "Playlists".

I've noticed that JRiver for Android isn't importing all the music from my SD card to the library. Looking at what's missing (from what I can tell thus far) it seems to be albums (with folders and metadata) containing [ and ] characters, e.g. [Box], [EP] and [Single] for example are missing. Not sure if this is from the folders being named that or from the metadata.

Just a couple of albums missing in the library from my Pink Floyd folder alone (these are the folder names)...

The Dark Side Of The Moon [Box] (2011 Remastered EMI 5 0999 029431 2 1 Immersion Edition)
The Wall [Box] (2012 Remastered EMI 5099902944029 Immersion Edition)
Wish You Were Here [Box] (2011 Remastered EMI 5 0999 0 29435 2 7 Immersion Edition)

Some other things missing in the library from my Smashing Pumpkins folder...

American Gothic [EP]
Pug [Dennis Flemion Remix] [Promo]
The End Is The Beginning Is The End [Single]

Etc.

The only common denominator between these that are missing from my library in MC for Android? [ and ] is in each folder name (and in the album field in the metadata), and that's probably why.

EDIT: I see it's already known. ;)

I am a huge fan of JRiver Media Centre an have used it for many years.  Consequently I have built up a good selection of playlists, rated music and custom tag entries all of which I fully expected to use with JRiver for Android.

•        It has no facility to use my playlists, ratings or any other information carefully built up over years of using Media Centre on Windows.
•         It only finds my DNLA device intermittently.
•         There is no facility to use my NAS as a source.
•         There is nothing in the “Help” option.
•         I was happy to help develop this and provide feedback but cannot find any way of doing that via the app.
•         It is very expensive by APP standards and for what it provides.

Please use this thread for comments.

Start at the end and read about playlist support.

NAS drives aren't supported.  Panel might work for you, but you need MC running as a server.

JRiver for Android is for playback of media located on the Android device itself.

I am running JRiver for Android 25.0.19, on a Samsung Galaxy S8 running Android 8.0.0. I am getting 5 loud beeps before each track starts. This didn't happen a few versions ago (maybe one version ago?). HAppy to help debug, if there is anything I can do.

We'll try something for the next build for this. One thing you can try for now is to go into the application manager on the phone, select the JRiver for Android app and go into the notifications section. There should be an option there to turn off sounds or alerts.

I've been looking forward to giving this a try - having tried and discarded many Android music apps... I appreciate it is still in Beta and potentially unstable.

Anyway, when I tried to purchase I got a message from the Play Store saying 'The early access programme is currently full. Space may open up later.'

Is this a Play Store thing or something you control? Is it possible to add some more users?

Many thanks

Thanks Jim.

Purchased and installed  :)

I haven't given it a proper run yet, but one thing that may be worth looking into regarding library import. While I was out yesterday, I was using Gizmo to stream music from my home server to my phone - not something I do often as there is plenty of music on the phone. I was playing a compilation album so all different artists.

Later, when I installed this app and imported the music on the phone (all stored on an SD card), it also imported the entirety of this compilation album despite the files not truly residing on the phone. I'm guessing it has included some data cached by Gizmo?

I only noticed this because the import of these particular files is somewhat incomplete - the tracks appear under the artist rather than 'Various Artists', there is no album in the Albums view, no artwork - all by-the-by really as I presume it is not supposed to import these temporary files?

One other observation (for now :)), in the settings, when using 'Player', there is an option for Audio Device which is set to 'Select one' which seems to imply I need to select one of the options - which are 'Android Oboe [Android Oboe]' and '[Null Output]'. In practice, it doesn't seem to make any difference and even if I select one, next time it says 'Select one' again. On a cosmetic note, I presume the Android Oboe entry is JRiver's engine? If so, it might be nice to display it as such - I daresay most people won't even know what Android Oboe means (I didn't until I googled it ;D)

Thanks again

I have never been able to play my 24/192 flac music files through my good sound system in my living room because JRiver MC is installed on my office PC. My office is too far away from the living room to string cables between them (if I was a bachelor I probably would have).

You just need a Network/DLNA capable sound system in the living room. Most of them will do it wireless now also  ;D

I'm late to this conversation perhaps - but I'm not really understanding the difference with JR for Android vs. Gizmo which I already use and Panel direct on the Browser, which this app looks a lot like? I'm not sure because I have not purchased it at $A15 does not seem to add much to the equation.

On Panel I know you continue to improve it, but I am not using it yet since it still very laggy. In addition it has (and Gizmo) a couple of quirks which annoy me.

One of them is that in Audio, Recent page where I spend most of my time, all albums are gorped that have the same title. For example I just loaded Joni Mitchell album "Blue" the other day. But on the Recent screen it shows Simply Red Album cover "Blue" which I loaded years ago. when selected then you see both Joni Mitchell and Simply Red album. This is not a rare issue as - how many of us have albums called "Greatest Hits" which keeps coming up to the top with every new one.

Another quirk is that again when selecting an album - if different tracks are published in different years (Date field) it splits them up so I can't play the whole album in one click - only the tracks from that year.

I remain open minded - not really critical of it, just not quite working the way I expect.

Thanks for your efforts team JRiver!

Gizmo and JRemote are remotes for a JRiver Media Center server running on another device (e.g. another PC or a Raspberry Pi, for example). JRiver for Android on the other hand is a port of JRiver Media Center itself running on an Android device. JRiver for Android uses Panel built-in as a GUI interface, so that's why it looks the same when using Panel as a remote for another device.

Question:
How does one populate the Podcast panel on JRiver Android?
My podcast's tags have a value of "Podcast" for media sub type, album artist, and genre but don't show up there.
