Can't launch MC24.0.72
« on: January 18, 2019, 10:00:34 pm »

I recently purchased a Master License for the upcoming MC25.

I am trying to upgrade a 2012 Mac mini from MC20 to MC24 and just installed MC24, but in trying to launch it all I see is a bouncing icon in the dock, it never progresses past that point.

Are you running OSX Mojave?  Apparently there's some workaround you have to do in Mojave.  Something about adding it to the list of applications that are allowed to do something (privacy setting?).  I can't remember.  What's weird is, I just went looking for the forum post on this and it's gone.

Sorry I don't have any more details.

Thanks for that, this is on an older machine that I intentionally keep on 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, in order to run previous  versions of various other programs. That said, I do not see anywhere on this support forum a listing for which version of MC works on which version(s) of macOS.

Any clarification of such would be greatly appreciated, I do have a different machine that does in fact run Mojave, so that is an option, but not what I wanted to do. I wanted to run MC24 (and soon 25) on the older Mac mini with 10.8.5 Mountain Lion.

The official system requirements say you need Lion or above (10.7).  But I would swear that somewhere in the MC24 development they changed some things which make it more lik 10.9 or above.  But again, I'm failing to find the forum threads where this is announced or discussed.  Darn it.

I would try downloading the last build of MC23 for Mac, or perhaps one of the very first builds of MC24 for Mac and try that.  I have a funny feeling MC23 will work for you.   Here's a link to some older versions of MC:

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Old_Versions

Good luck!

Brian,
as far as I know you cannot use MC23 with a Master licence for MC25. Am I wrong?

That's correct, a MC25 license won't work with MC23.

MC23 is not a long term solution.  I suggested it as a test to see if the OS version is the issue.  You can install MC23 and run it in trial mode for 30 days; though you'll only need a few minutes to try it out of course.

If my theory is correct, the long term solution will be to use a Mac with OS X 10.9 or above.  Whether or not that's this Mac is up to you of course.  I'm just trying to help diagnose the source of the problem.

I'm pretty sure MC24 still runs on 10.8.
I'll check it.
The bouncing Icon is normal when you upgrade revisions since it has to copy new data from the app folder to the users Application Data folder. On a spinner this can take some time.
When it finishes (as much as a minute or so) it should popup MC's main screen.

The reference to fixing the crashing on start issue is here:

Hi Bob,

Thats for checking, it seems I don't have quite either scenario above, i.e. the bouncing icon occurs for about 1 minute, and then nothing happens at all. After right-clicking the now non-bouncing Dock icon, the only option is to Force Quit (application not responding).

There is never any indication of a crash or error message, it simply refuses to launch on 10.8.5 Mountain Lion.

Duplicated and we are trying to figure out what is the issue.
In the meantime you can run it if you start it from the command like.

Run a terminal (from Applications/Utilities) and do:

/Applications/Media\ Center\ 24.app/Contents/MacOS/Media\ Center\ 24

You'll see a bunch of startup junk on the screen then MC will run.

24.0.75 has just been released which fixes the OSX 10.8 launch problem.
I just dumped the older version I had and downloaded/installed 24.0.75, unfortunately I'm getting the exact same behavior as before, icon bounces for about a minute and then the only option is Force Quit (Application not responding).

I also was unable to get the above provided Terminal command to run the older version. This newer version does however launch with that same command, now I just need to find my MC25 Master License, it seems to have vanished from my email folder, I know that sounds crazy but it simply isn't where I thought it should be.

EDIT: Restored the license, everything appears to be normal, except it would not launch originally from the icon as stated above, only the Terminal. After loading a library, building thumbnails etc... I quit and then tried to launch again from the icon, still no dice, bounces for a minute and then nothing happens, only choice is Force Quit (application not responding).

Ok, we'll take another look.
It works fine here.
Do you have any other version of MC installed (like MC22, MC23, etc)?

On that machine (2012 Mac mini) I have MC20 installed, it launches and runs fine still.

Ok, I just tested this with a couple of other versions installed and it worked fine.
I also took everything off and it still worked fine.

Can you delete the Media Center 24 from your Applications folder,
Reboot
and then go to a terminal windows as the user you run MC as and do this:
cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/J\ River
then
rm -rf Media\ Center\ 24
Reinstall Media Center 24
and try again?

Make sure you're Mac has an internet connection.

It will definitely take some time to copy files into the user Application Support directory when you do this, especially if you don't have a SSD drive so it could bounce for a minute or three.

You will have to re-install the license when it comes up but your library should be there...

You reinstall MC by downloading the .dmg for MC24 (found here) and opening that, then dragging the Media Center 24 app contained within into the Applications folder. Then open the Applications folder and start Media Center 24 from there.

OK, I misunderstood above and thought that was a Reinstall command to be entered into the CLI.

That said, I've just tried to launch a newly downloaded MC24 and I get the exact same behavior, icon bounces for a minute and then nothing happens. There is an initial brief small window that opens with a progress bar that says initializing, that quickly vanishes, and then the program does not launch.

I wish I could reproduce this.
You can still launch it from the command line??

Sorry for the delayed response, yes, I did just launch it from the command line using the Terminal.

10.8.5 Mountain Lion
I'm kind of at a loss at this point since I can't duplicate that here on 10.8.5 on our Mac Mini.

I suggest that you create a new user account on your Mac.  Like mikeytest .  Login as mikeytest and install MC24.  Now see if it runs.  If so, you probably have something unusual going on with your primary user account.  If it fails for mikeytest just like your regular account, then it's a system wide compatibility issue.
