Wave bar
« on: February 02, 2019, 09:40:23 pm »

I want to start out that I just purchased JRiver and the sound is absolutely amazing! It's a difference in night and day. I was using several of the top players and it's no comparison. I sat my wife down (who is not an audiophile) and I asked her which sounded better using a couple of different players all configured with exclusive ASIO and volume 100% with no DSP or EQ of any kind. When I played JRiver at the last, she immediately said "WOW, that one is best. It's a big difference." The music was more 3-D and you could pick out sounds that you didn't notice before.

And the software covers so many things and I am still finding cool new features.

My only question and thing I miss so much... the "wave bar". It helps you jump to exact places in a song where there is a volume change. Instead of a slider, it shows a wave of the song as the progress bar of the song playing.

Almost every major audio player has this.

Are you considering adding this feature in a future release?

[Edit by JimH -- A Waveform Bar was added in MC26.]

Please explain why you might want that.

MC has bookmarks that allow you to set the place you want to start.  You might also find "particles" useful.  Both are on the wiki.

A waveform seekbar is what jeffguy is talking about. Something like this...

It'd give the option to replace the current progress bar with the slider, with one that displays the waveform instead. I imagine this wouldn't be easy to do at all, and probably would require modifications/enhancements to every skin.

Yes, exactly.

Let say your listening to a song and, all of a sudden, you decide you want to listen to the awesome refrain right after that soft part toward the end (for example). You can do that on the fly. You can see the different sections of the song and move to any part.

I probably will use those bookmarks (love that). But that would be more of where I might always want to start a song. That would be a set-and-forget kind of thing. A pre-determined start up that you want permanently.

A wave bar gives more control and information to quickly find the random place I'm looking for on the fly at that single emotional place listening to a song.

I hope my response helps.

Would very much like to see that.  Instead of the spectrum analyzer in the header, show the full waveform across the width of the display.  Would be a wonderful addition.

It's probably not an easy request at all, and like I said all skins would probably need modified/improved to accommodate such a change.

And *if* it was ever done hopefully it'd be optional, because I have no use for such a thing.

I could see how this would be useful for recordings of speeches, interviews etc., where certain clues like applause from the audience or prolonged moments of silence lets you find certain parts of the recording.

I'd like this as well.  I like the way that archive has implemented this.  As it plays the wave form, color fills in.  I do wish I could click on the wave to jump to certain areas, but at least the progress bar is reasonably close to the wave form:

https://archive.org/details/dgray2018-12-14.dpa4023.flac16

They generate the png of the wave in the background before you get to the file:

I've used this on a previous player that I had before MC.  I found it to be really awful for me.  It's extremely distracting and draws your eye, as the display changes (becomes colored) as the song advances.  It kinda ruined the music for me as it was telling me in advance what was coming up in terms of song transitions, etc.

I kinda wonder why anyone would think this is helpful, but let me not focus on that.  Instead I'll say that I would expect this to be an option if it ever gets implemented.  Meaning that you could easily turn it off, which I would do immediately.

Thanks,

Brian.

One of the more useful functions of a wavebar display would be to give a visual indication of LOUDNESS - no need to go digging into tags to look for volume analysis.

That's the spectrogram, not the wave chart:

I've also seen this type of bar used to snip and save the article. Could be very useful in MC.

LOL! That's why it is kind of useful. Delete that track immediately! If I have mutiple versions of a track, the first thing I do is open them up so I can see the waveform. Also, if you listen to long DJ mixes, it make navigation a lot easier. Besides the fact that it looks cool. I don't see how it's any more distracting than the current seekbar/track position moving across you screen.

Me, too.  It is very useful when comparing specific portions of different recordings since the dynamic profile will be fairly comparable even if the timing isn't.

Not a huge fan of your color choices, but hopefully that is addressable via the skin?

Woah, you actually did it Matt. :o

Please say it's optional too, hahaha. Actually, I could see how being able to toggle between a normal seekbar and the waveform seekbar could come in handy.

Concerning playing now, maybe something could be done also for Theater View's couple of "floating dots" (not a wave bar request). Allowing to show textual presentation instead of dots (which we get when selecting the dot) would at least give information what's happening

Some say that while listening to music the brain finds sonic patterns and makes unconscious predictions of what's coming. When correct there is a dopamine release. Showing the wave bar will let the brain know what's coming and thus interfere with users dopamine releases. Spoilers if you will. Perhaps there should be an option to build the wave bar as music plays so you can see what has been played but not what is to come. At least that's how my neuromodulation feels about the situation.

Or, by prediction, enhance anticipation and response.

This is one of the two updates that convinced me to upgrade. I love it and if I can get pleasing colors in my preferred skin I'll be thrilled. I'm using black on black and don't like the bold red and blue.

Thanks Jim!

This can be adjusted on a per-skin basis. Hopefully I get a little more time soon and I'll edit up all the skins that ship with MC to have better wavebar colors that match each skin.
