Posting this in case it helps anyone searching for possible solution to same/similar problems:

I noticed MC was perpetually running at about 16-30% CPU and, after a bunch of trial and error disabling features one-by-one, it turned out the issue was being caused by the Run Auto Import in the Background feature and turning it off (Options>Libraries and Folders>Run auto-import in background) resolved this problem.

As a byproduct, turning off background auto-import also resolved my longstanding problem of MC not exiting fully when closed and also a problem with MC hanging during auto-updates https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,112711.msg779562.html#msg779562l (which also disables Media Server functionality when it occurs).

I've been suffering with these problems for years (since MC17), so it's nice to finally have them corrected, although I have yet to experience the usability consequences I'll run into from disabling auto-import.

If there is a specific place in the logs to look for MC getting stuck on specific files during auto-import, please let me know so I can try to address the offenders. I suspect its related to a related subtask to auto import (thumbnails, analyze, etc.) but there are so many possible culprits that I would like to find a hint on where to start.

My trail of tears:

Just a shot in the dark... what are your windows performance settings? Have you ticked programs?

If this question refers to Processor Scheduling under Windows Performance Options>Advanced, then yes it is set to Programs though this is just the Windows default, I did not set it.

Also, some updated information: After turning off Auto-Import I ran a manual import of my library and MC has been pegged at 30% CPU and stuck on Updating Thumbnails File 2 of 152897 ever since (1.5 days). I have now done a Options>Tree & View>Erase all thumbnails and then Build missing thumbnails (high creation threading) and it eventually stopped progressing at 121107 of 275082 and while pegging CPU use at 80-90%. MC is not handling whatever it's choking on very gracefully.

Situations like this have come up before.; it's often been traced to a corrupt file(s).

Turning on logging may help as it can report the last file it dealt with which can help in identifying the dodgy file (how large the file may get to in your case may not be helpful)

Sending the file to developers has often resulted in improvement to dealing with corrupt files.

Try thumbnailing your collection one half at a time (as in a binary search https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_search_algorithm) this is the fastest way to home in on the dodgy file.
