Lyric Lookup - Using Azlyrics.com
« on: March 16, 2019, 09:42:42 am »

With MC 25 about to launch, I want to bring up the issue of using azlyrics.com one more time. During this beta test I and several others have been permanently banned for the azlyrics.com site simply for using the new lyric lookup feature.  Presumably we were banned because azlyrics determined that we were misusing their site. They apparently decided we were attacking their site in some inappropriate way.  I cannot even open their website. When I try, the browser says that it received a null string back. Clearly they are identifying me and are purposely denying me access. I have never been banned from a website before and since I cannot even access their website there is no way for me to communicate with them. Another poster tried and he reported that he got nothing back from them.

I sincerely question whether this is the type of action that JRiver should be promoting to its user base.  Do you really want a large portion of your user base banned from an Internet site because of your software?

Unless there is a true fix to this problem, I strongly suggest you not launch this new feature with azlyrics as one of the lookup sites.

Rebooting your router might get you a new IP address.

A change was made after the blocking problem was discovered, so this may not happen any longer.

You could try contacting them.  A donation might get their attention.  We will also suggest that our users donate.

Rebooting my router does nothing. I am still blocked.  If you read the link AD provided, it is the same problem and rebooting does not solve the problem.  That discussion is 5 years old, so it is an old problem with them.

How do you suggest I contact them when I cannot access their website?   Paying them is not a realistic suggestion.

Have you contacted them? Sounds like you have not.  Given you are the one asking your users to use their site, I would think you would take some responsibility for the situation.

Are you sure your fix has really fixed the problem? Sounds like you are just hoping.

Yes, I've tried to contact them.

No, I don't know if our fix will work.

You can install Opera browser and enable its VPN feature in order to try to contact through their website.

If they did not respond to Jim or to the other user who contacted them, I have no reason to believe that they will respond to me.

I would definitely suggest removing Azlyrics.com from the lyrics lookup system before the public release of MC25 - otherwise the forum floodgates will probably open to a torrent of "I've been banned" postings.

We now lookup lyrics from a couple sites.  So even if one turns off we'll have the other.

After finding myself on the azlyrics ban list, I abandoned lyrics lookups...

Having just retried a couple of albums, I'm pleased to report 100% success.

If you try to access the website directly, are you able to do so - or are you still banned from using it. It may be that you are still banned, but the lookup just went to the alternate sites once you were rejected.

Exactly. I honestly couldn't care less about a ban from azlyrics. I didn't even know they were a thing until this feature arrived in MC.

I'm just pleased to be able to report that lookups appear to be working for me now. My test was only in the region of fifty tracks, with lyrics returned for them all. I haven't gone wholesale yet...

I guess I just do not see why MC should use a source that has limited added value and collects data about users and identifies them as malicious users.

By the way, my one test with the newest software did not find the tracks I tried.  However, it may well find a large number of tracks for most people. I am all for that. I just do not see why keeping this somewhat rogue website is so important.

Azlyrics has banned you from using their website. They do this after you "overuse" their site. "Overuse" is often just looking up lyrics for a handful of albums.   Unfortunately, MC directs  you to the site and you quickly get banned. JRiver is well aware of this problem but have decided to use them anyway.  Unfortunately, once banned there does not seem to be any way to get access to the site again.  I recommended that JRiver drop using them because of this, but they have decided to continue using the site.

We use Google first now.  If no result is found, we use Azlyrics.

AZlyrics second
Google third.
