How to Transfer Settings from MC18 to MC25?
« on: March 23, 2019, 12:49:57 am »

I just downloaded/registered JRiver MC25 and would like to copy all my settings that I have been using in MC18 for years to the new version. All my media files have been successfully synced and indexed, I just want to get the same settings from MC18 to MC25. Is this possible using the JRiver app?

Do a library backup in MC18, then restore that library backup in MC25.

Try making a backup in MC18 and restoring it in MC25.  File > Library ...

This only works if your library is local. There does not seem to be a way to do this if you are using a shared library.

Incorrect.

If you are using a Client/Server setup with MC, then the Backup and Restore of the Library must be done on the Server, of course, and Library will be synced to the Client on next connection.

To carry over the settings specific to the Client, open the default Library in the earlier version of MC on the Client (not the server library), do a Backup of the Library, and a Restore of the Library into MC25, with settings.

Note that it is a pretty big step from MC18 to MC25, so there may be some settings that don't carry over exactly. You will need to watch out for issues and adjust some settings.

If you are upgrading from a more recent version of MC, I believe its 21 and up, there isn't even a need to do this. The installer of MC25 will automatically find the old "default library" and import it settings.
So in that case its basically as simple as installing MC25, and then pointing it at the server again (since it'll start with the default library), and it should be the same as before, settings-wise anyway.

Yep, that is true, thanks to the good work you did improving the process.

But I am still seeing lots of posts where it seems MC25 doesn't find the previous version. One of my installations found the previous version, and one didn't.

So I err on the side of caution and recommend a Backup/Restore when there are issues.
