Video hangs on stop

I'm intermittently getting a situation where MC fails to stop playback, the entire app is completely responsive but the video being played is left "frozen" at a black screen and the only way to stop it is to kill both the MC client and the MC server to forcibly terminate playback. Nothing else works. There's nothing apparent in the logs and it doesn't happen v often but has happened 3-4 times in the last month or so.

not the end of the world as I can kill it to get past this but obviously not ideal. Any ideas?

yes that is the same problem by the sounds of it

I don't think it is video driver related as everything else works normally (theatre view etc), it is behaving more like a deadlock or perhaps some uncaught exception means it has blown up during attempting to stop. For me it does not happen often, a few times in a month that I have noticed. Is it happening very often for you?

They resolved it, but maybe it's back... I'd rather not upgrade to whatever version you guys are using until they fix it, AGAIN.

That build and all the way up to my current which is 25.0.40 is not having the issue described. I won't be going any further than .40 until this is resolved again.

8.1 pro, completely disabled (via group policy)

This issue happened before:

Not obviously the same, no crash here, just unable to actually stop playback and you get a black screen. MC is otherwise functioning normally.

I am on MC 25.0.59 right now but it happened with all 25 versions so far.

OS is win7sp1 up to date with no antivirus.

The issue here on playback stop only happened a few times so far, but the problem I describe on playback start is more frequent

I'm not sure what that has to do with it (given how old the 550 is) but I suspect you're misunderstanding the symptoms

MC, and the desktop, is completely useable with no visible glitches except for the player window is a black screen regardless of whether it is a pane within the MC client or full screen. The OSD is still usable also and fades in/out as you move the mouse into the relevant position. Other popup menus (e.g. right click) also work normally. The only thing that does not work is that MC does not respond to stop so you have to kill every MC process. On restarting MC, everything now works normally.

when it started happening (as soon as I upgraded from 19 to 25) I also thought it was driver related so I downloaded the latest driver available for my videocard. But it didn't fix the problem. Playback with v19 was rock solid, so I am afraid it has something to do with v25 or something that happened between v19->v25.

I think "video goes dark" is "player stops playback but is unable to close video window to stop" rather than a spontaneous video driver problem. First time I noticed it was a month or so ago and I install updates as they become available.

If you can reproduce reliably then use https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging and share the logs

I can't reproduce reliably, when it happens the same file can generate a  black screen once and never again. In the logs I have, there's no error that is logged ....

The latest driver may not be the best driver. 

The OS can update the driver without telling you.

JimH, it happened with two different drivers.
This machine never had a crash or video problem for the last 5 years. This is a dedicated HTPC with only mediacenter on it, no antivirus, no game, nothing.
This issue only appeared after I upgraded to v25. I really don't think it is driver related. What's more when I say latest driver, I mean for my videocard which means drivers from march 2018.
I will reset the logs and wait for the problem to happen.

I vaguely recall something similar happening to me ... if my memory serves me right, it happened when I set exclusive mode for screen in MadVR

MC is completely unresponsive to any form of stop command in this state whether it is an MCWS call, multiple clicks on the stop button or clearing from playing now.
