Windows 10 - ASIO -Crackling/Popping issues
« on: August 11, 2019, 06:30:27 am »

Hi.

Has anyone experienced crackling/popping when using JRiver/madVR/ASIO? It seems this could be a problem with Windows 10. I can get round this if I set the Audio to 'ASIO-direct', with this setting everything appears fine no more issues. But this is using Direct, I would rather avoid this if possible.

I read this article which seems to be a fix, but I use an AMD CPU so I am unable to try this myself:

I also read this hoping it would fix the problem but unfortunately not:

Does your ASIO driver have some sort of ASIO control panel where you can change the bit-depth and latency? If so, try increasing the latency because issues with pops/crackling like that usually means the latency is too low.

For example, here's the ASIO control panel that comes with my driver;

Thanks. Just run a latency check which appears to say everything is OK with my PC.

I will look into adjusting the latency on my card (I am using a Lynx-AES16e)

That's different, DPC latency.

With the ASIO driver selected in MC, go to Device settings... and click the Open Driver Control Panel... button and see if it pops up a control panel like mine. If it does, try increasing the latency.

The issue is that when using ASIO sometimes latency is set too low (since it can do crazy low latency, e.g. 2ms with mine), and with latency set low like that there can be pops, stutter, glitches and whatnot. I've found it's prone to these issues when using other apps like web browsers so increasing the latency helps with that. In my own testing I found I could go down as low as 10ms, but I tend to start noticing random pops and stutter if I go that low, so I usually keep it around 20ms.

No I cant see this option to increase the latency, only an option to alter the buffer size. I have dropped Lynx an email to see if this is possible?

I will add whilst I think about this. Last week I was able to stop this issue 'crackling/popping' by simply JRiver/playback options/Audio - select a different audio device to the ASIO. Then simply re-select the ASIO. All week it had been fine after doing this. Then yesterday after switching on my PC it appears worse than ever. Even just dragging the mouse round the desktop I can hear the odd crackle.  ?

Buffer size and latency are the same thing, 10ms buffer is 480 samples for example (at 48kHz) whereas 5ms is 240 samples and so on

OK, thanks Matt, didn't realise this. It's looking like my Lynx card could be at fault. Having uninstalled the drivers I am no longer able to re-install them. I've tried it on 2 PC's, one with W7 and the other W10 and I get the same results. This may explain why I've been having a few Video playback issues lately.  :(

I've managed to get the AES working again. When I play video through JRiver using 'Red October standard' everything is fine. It's when madVR is introduced that things get glitchy, and this is very apparent when playing HDR. The picture stutters and there is constant crackling. My GPU is a GTX 1080 so this shouldn't be the issue. And I have no issues when using HDMI audio/video. It as if JRiver/madVR/Lynx AES16e (ASIO) are playing at different sample rates. I've also checked on Windows 7 and its the same results..

Are there any other settings I should be looking at.
