Zip the error logs and attach them to your post.
Is MC actually closing down or just hanging? Does this happen with all flac files or just one particular flac file? Where are the flac files stored, on a local HDD or on a NAS?

Just happened once but I enabled logs so they could track what happened.

The files are on a local mechanical Hard Drive

Are you using the latest version 25.0.92? I can't see anything in the logs, it plays two flac files and then the log just stops - perhaps one of the admins might have more insight, but as far as I can see your log doesn't show a crash situation. Do you use MC for TV recording? If not you might want to switch of TV in the options>general>features section, I only mention this because most of your log file is taken up with checking for tv recordings and then stating that there aren't any.

Are you using any sort of antivirus/antimalware app? If so, what?

Does it freeze (program unresponsive)?  Or crash (program disappears)?

There is no crash in your log.

Let us know if the freeze persists with MC 25.0.92. There might be something else going on with your pc, mine has been playing flac files for the last 5 hours with no problem.

Crashed again, this time JRiver was not playing a file for a while (about 2 hours) then when I choose to play a flac file it freezed (25.0.92 x64).

Unfortunatelly I can't attach the file here because of its size

what device you using to play? ... using WASAPI or ASIO or DirectSound? … maybe its your audio driver (does playing other audio format crashes? … anything specific on flac that crashes system - maybe only hiRes crashes it?)

I'm using Direct Sound, no other program crashes, just JRiver.

About other audio, well I'm mostly using flacs because I'm testing my new sound card, this time crashed when I was playing Yanni Live at the Acropolis 24bit 44.1k track 1, previously was freezing when playing track 4 or 5 of the same album.

By the way when I double click on a song not always plays, some times it needs another double click or click on the play button.

Which sound card? … make sure the driver for it is 64bit one as you using 64bit version of MC

Soundblaster AE-9, x64 driver, x86 drivers doesn't works on an x64 environment.

He had a different problem, he after a few hours or so his audio was muted, in my case I got some freezes, in that thread he mentioned that the overclock was a problem, I don't overclock my PC at all, neither the video card.

Besides I don't have "PCIe SO-IOV Support"  and "Intel VT-d" enabled in my motherboard either.

My point really is that your soundcard seems to have problems. I have been playing DSD, Flac and MP3 audio files with no problems for the last year using MC on 4 different PCs. This would seem to me to indicate that your system is having problems for some reason and that it isn't specifically a JRiver induced problem.

Did you set sampling rate above 192khz ... ppl mention DirectSound has problem with that

https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=121681.0

Try using ASIO or WASAPI just to test it’s not DirectSound that causes issue

May be, but I'm wondering why only JRiver seems to have problems and I'm also wondering why is not logging the freezes on the logs.

Nope, 192k is the limit in Direct Sound, after that there's no sound.

I'm gonna check ASIO but I can't use it permanently because ASIO has exclusiveness of the soundcard which I can't use because I play music and play games at the same time.

Wait? What?

Are you playing games at the same time as music via MC when these freezes happen? If so, that would have been kind of important to mention earlier.

Gaming pushes a PC's resources. It isn't uncommon for other software to suffer the consequences of that, especially when a shared resource such as Windows Audio is involved.

Also, you are using Windows Audio, because you use Direct Sound. So look in the Windows logs for the issue.

Uncheck Exclusive Mode in MC's Audio settings.  It's just below the sound card selection.

I'll check in windows logs to see if I find something, thanks for the tip.

Excuse my ignorance, I went to Tools -> Options -> Audio

then I only can see Audio Device: Default Audio Device and Device settings but none seems to have that Exclusive mode.

« Reply #21 on: August 30, 2019, 07:32:44 pm »

This time I was able find out what happened, this time JRiver crashed when playing a flac file.

For the past week or so 25.0.95 x64 didn't crash or freeze because I was closing JRiver before I put the system to sleep (I don't shut down my PC, I mostly use sleep unless it has a new update).

So this time I didn't close JRiver when I put my system to sleep so the other times that I had crashes it was the same so if it seems that when the system goes to sleep and JRiver is not closed then there's a chance to get a crash and/or freeze of JRiver.

The file is too big so here is the link of the log

My security software goes nuts when I try to download that log.

Norton blocks the site saying it is unsafe. Virus and Drive-By Downloads.

If I go to the site anyway, because your specific link isn't an issue, Chrome blocks the download saying it is a malicious download. Possibly your zip file on that site has now been infected.

Can you put the log somewhere else? OneDrive, DropBox, Google Drive?

Well, you certainly have a crash this time.

I see, I'm not using it for TV Recordings so I'll disable it, when It crashed 25.0.92 wasn't available but I've updated to that version.

Did you turn off the TV Feature as suggested above? Because you still have a lot of messages about uninitialised TV devices. A lot of TV stuff was happening just before the crash.

You seem to be able to play lots of FLAC files without any issue. Maybe you have some corrupted files?

The FLAC file you were playing when MC crashed was;
D:\Music\Iron Maiden\The Number Of The Beast\02 - Children Of The Damned.flac

Try playing that one again by itself, and see if MC will play it, or crash.

I haven't worked out how to make sense of crash.dmp files, so I can't see exactly what caused the crash. It does look like JRPlayer and possibly JRTools are involved. It could be a memory error, but I can't tell if that is failing memory, or an invalid memory pointer.

Test the FLAC files above to see if it crashes MC, and if not, someone who can read the crash dump file will have to take a look. You could try running the Windows memory test function as well. Google that.

Ok, this time I unchecked TV under options>general>features.

Yes I've played that file lots of times (it is one of my favorite albums) and never crashed/freezed, the one that seems to crash more often is Yanni's live at the Acropolis.

The only thing that comes to my mind is that those flac files are high res (24 bit, 96 kHz) for the Iron Maiden and 24 bit /44100 Hz for the Yanni's that plus the sleep issue that I mentioned above.

Those bit depths and sample rates aren't going to bother MC, unless there is something wrong with the files, or the output device/driver can't handle them.

Well, there is also the issue that the Soundblaster AE-9 does have driver problems, as I think you are aware. https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,121997.0.html

As you do Sleep your PC most of the time, have you tried rebooting it a couple of times, then seeing if the problem goes away? It does look like a bit of a memory problem, so rebooting may just fix that up.

Otherwise you will have to wait for someone who can make sense of the crash dump file.

Yes the soundblaster has issues but I don't have the issues other people has, perhaps I was lucky.

About the sleep, if I sleep the PC with JRiver loaded (not playing anything) then the crash is most likely to appear when I reuse JRiver, not immediately but it will after a few songs.

Since I mostly only use sleep, then I was closing JRiver before going to sleep and that helped me to void those crashes, but I wanted to post my findings here.

My HTPC is set to sleep when not in use. MC runs all the time. I don't need to close MC before sleeping the HTPC. That is highly unlikely to be the issue. If anything, doing what you have been doing may just clean up some memory and hence avoid the problem, for a while.

If the Soundblaster has driver issues, it will have all sorts of problems. Your issue looks like a memory issue, which is consistent with a bad driver.
