Networking not working [Solved]
« on: September 21, 2019, 01:46:19 pm »

I recently upgraded my Century Link service to fiber. New modem/router, new   network ID/password.

Now my ID is non-functional. From the "text" menu I do option 13. Network Manager & press enter. I receive error message --> Could not connect to wicd's D-Bus interface. Check the wicd's log for error messages.

I need to set up the ID to connect to my wireless network.

Any help is appreciated.

Option 13 is correct.  It brings up Wicd.

Choose your Wifi network, select properties and enter your Wifi password.  On my network, I use WPA 1/2 (Passphrase).  That's set just above the key, near the bottom.

I do not get the opportunity to select anything - I key in 13, press enter & receive the error. It appears that the wicd service is not running. I have no clue how to get this service running. I have re-booted several times & that did not do it.

Is this an IdPi or IdNUC?
What happens when you do option 11? Do both the ethernet and wireless interfaces show up?

i'll try 11 again tonight when I get home from work. I have done it a couple of days ago & I believe both show.

I do not currently have ethernet connected. Could this be the problem?

Hi there!  I have just connected and powered up the nuc7 unit.  From the main menu I entered 13 as I wish to run the device on my wireless network.  On the network manager page, I'm getting a "no wireless networks found" message in the center of the screen.  I have attempted "refresh" but the unit only searches for a wired connection.  I have also re-started my network router with no change.  How can I get the device to recognize my wireless network?

That should be in the instructions.

I believe it's under Network Management.  You can also right click on the desktop and choose Wicd.

Then you'll need to enter the Wifi password there.

I am utilizing the "Id Install Guide".  I just tried again and I am still getting the same message.  I don't know what you mean by "right click on the desktop".  I am using MC18 on a laptop with Gizmo on my phone.  I do not have a USB mouse.  I only got a keyboard as per the install guide, that is all that should be required.  Under the topic "Network" in the guide it mentions firewall settings and certain ports.  I checked my router settings and I have a DHCP Server.  I could not find anything mentioning "firewall".  I do not know why the Id is not recognizing my network!  I am basically a novice, and require detailed instructions when I'm dealing with technology that doesn't wok as I expect it to!

Right click on the desktop on the Id.  I thought you said you wanted to set up a wireless connection on the Id.

If you don't have a wired connection to the internet installed and the wireless has not been configured yet, the IdNUC will automatically enter wireless configuration mode so that you can connect to it as an accesspoint with a phone or computer with a wireless connection to allow easy configuration of the wireless.

If you are using a iPhone (Settings->WiFi) connecting to the accesspoint (Id-xxxxxxx)  will automatically bring up the configuration page.
If you are using an android phone or computer you connect to the accesspoint (Id-xxxxxxx) in the wifi netwrok configuration then open a browser and try to go to any page which will bring up the wireless configuration page.

Edit: It seems there is a bug in the current build that won't allow the configuration of the wireless network from the network config menu on the Id while it's running in accesspoint mode as described above. The workaround is to either config the wireless by using the procedure described above or temporarily connect the Id wired at which point you will be able to configure the wireless settings from the menu using wicd. Note that you will most likely need to change the encryption type to wpa1/2 passphrase and choose connect automatically.
This will be fixed in the next update.

Thank You Bob,

It seems that I was able to get the Id connected to my network using my laptop!  The Id now displays in MC.  Unfortunately I am still having issues.  In MC(18) under "Playing Now" when I highlight the Id and play an audio track, even though I have MC set at 100% output and the track seems to be playing (the time advances and the bar is moving), there does not appear to be any gain with the signal (the little right and left channel graphic spectral vertical display bars are not visible).  Slightly further down in the tree, in the subset to "Playing From the Main Library", the Id also appears.  When I highlight the Id here, and hit "play" I get a "There is nothing to Play" box.  This is while a "Manage the Library" page is displayed. When I hit the "Load Library" tab I get a box that states: "The Server is a different version or not a Library Server.  Please update both machines to the current version and ensure Library Server is running on the proper port.

         Server database version:24
         Client database version: 21"

I have no idea whether any of this has anything to do with the issue I am experiencing (No audio playback through the Id)!

FYI:  I am using a USB connection from the front of the Id (I tried a rear connection as well), to my Benchmark DAC3L.  The dac seems to recognize the USB device normally!

Thanks

I think the message pretty much spells it out, the client is using a (several year old) MC21 build, and likely has issues with newer MC versions (especially if there have been database changes, which I think there have).

In my opinion, it really all works best if the server and client(s) run the same version of MC, or at least within one major version of each other.

If you are trying to use the Id as a Media Server Client, you might have issues as AD says.
If you push to it from the MC18 instance it won't make any difference, it's just a DLNA renderer in that case.
Your USB DAC needs to be selected from the Audio Configuration menu on the Id either via in the MC GUI on the Id or via Panel.
You should look for a hw: device corresponding to your DAC.

Thanks!

I intend to use the device as a DNLA Renderer, playing to it from my Windows laptop either directly or using Gizmo on my android phone.

I have put the device into GUI mode and from the "J River Main Menu" selected "10 - Show Audio Device Information".  The connected DAC appears at the bottom of the listed devices.  As I stated previously, I do not have a mouse.  It appears that I may be required to either highlight or "right click" on the listed device in order to select it.

I do not know what GUI Mode is, and I have not been able to exit this mode.  Will I still be able to utilize the Id as intended if it remains in GUI Mode?  If not, how can I exit this mode?

I have been satisfied with MC18 and it does what I need it to do, therefore I have not upgraded.  I am guessing that the included "Media Center Id Registration Code" is a license for a more recent version of MC.  Would updating to this version solve the issues that I am having?  Should I just obtain a USB mouse?  If I choose to use the code to update, how do I enter it?  If I am unhappy with the new version, will I be able to restore MC18 (I have my original registration code)?

Thanks Again!

You can exit the GUI mode and go back into the text mode by selecting choice 2 on the main menu.
You can use Alt-Tab to switch between the open windows.
You won't be able to select the audio device on the Id from MC without a mouse. It's in Tools->Options->Audio like on your MC18.
Another way to do this is to use your PC to connect to the Id using microsoft remote desktop or a VNC client. You can do this when the Id is in text OR gui mode. You can get the IP address of the Id by doing option 11 on the menu.

Edit: I forgot to answer your license question. The Id license is based on the hardware and will not work on a regular version of MC.

Thanks for that information!

I think that my (hopefully) last remaining issue is setting the audio output to "USB".  I found what I believe to be the correct IP address to use in setting up "remote desktop" as it's the only one that brings up a box requesting a password.  I have entered the "access key" in the password field and it seems to be incorrect.  Is there some other password that will work?

I am also wondering about the "Library" issue that I mentioned previously.  It seems that since I am now connected that the Id would be playing to the (default) HDMI port and even though nothing is connected to that port (other than a monitor), that I should be able to see that it is playing in MC on my laptop.

I broke down and got a wired USB mouse today.  After about an hour of tinkering, I now have everything running as I want to, utilizing Gizmo!

Thanks for the guidance!

One thing that I have noticed is that the stop/pause fader does not seem to function using the id!  I have played with the settings Tools>Options>Stop, Seek, & Skip as well as enabling "Alternate Mode Settings" with the fade set to "slow", with no fade!  I first noticed this using Gizmo, made adjustments in MC on my laptop, and tried "stop/pause" from MC on the laptop as well with no fade...

I stopped play, closed and re-started MC with no changes.

***Problem Solved! - I realized that these settings probably needed to occur within the GUI, so I took my 40" TV back downstairs and hooked up the mouse and keyboard again! ;)***

The default password for remote connection is remote
You can change it on the Id menu.

Correct, settings for playback need to be set on the playback device.

Thanks, I an now able to utilize the remote desktop to access The Id settings menus.

After a little tinkering, last night I was using Gizmo and having no issues.  Today the only thing that I have been getting either with Gizmo, or directly in MC on my laptop, has been a fairly rapid cycling through each of the tracks with no sound!  On Gizmo "Stopped" appears along with the "Resume Playback" tab, but without my doing anything, the track title advances and the cycle repeats until it gets to the final track (the only change is the track title).  The view remains the same as described above, but it no longer advances.

I have tried everything that I can think of but this is the only "play mode" that I get!

Check to make sure your audio device in MC on the Id hasn't changed. The update shouldn't have changed that.

As I recall, before I completed the update, I noticed that the selected drive name looked different than I had remembered when I had previously selected it.  I changed it to another one.  This did not affect the issues I continued to experience.  There are many listed "benchmark dac2" drivers.  I chose:
sysdefault: CARD=B10[ALSA] Benchmark DAC2 USB Audio 1.0, USB Audio. Default Audio Device

The others listed start with: default / dmix / front / hw / iec958 / plughw / usbstream, and six different "surround" possibilities: 21,40,S41,S50,S51,S71

I have tried all of them except the "surround" choices.  The sysdefault and default choices act as described in my pervious post.  All other choices either stop at the second track, or just say "waiting" after the first track briefly seems to start but quickly stops. Each time that I change the setting, I click "OK" on the GUI and be sure that the player is stopped before I try to play again.

I am not utilizing a surround system so I ruled those out.  I am playing to 2-channel stereo.

Any suggestions as to which driver I should try would be appreciated.

I sense that this issue may be something other than my selecting the appropriate driver (although this will be an important step).

Thanks!

You should not use the default or sysdefault unless you use DSP studio to force everything to 48k.
Best to use the hw: devices or front: devices. There should be one for your B10.

I now have the following driver selected:  hw: CARD=B10, DEV=0 [ALSA] Benchmark DAC2 USB audio 1.0, USB Audio.  Direct hardware device without any conversions

This is the only "hw" option where "B10" appears.  I am getting the same behavior as mentioned above: cycling through the track titles with no sound.  In GUI DSP Studio I have only "Output Format" checked. This matches the setting in MC.  I have tried unchecking this as well (so that nothing is checked within DSP Studio).

That device should be the best.
I suspect there is some issue with MC finding your files.
If it isn't already, can you reboot it into GUI mode (from the main Id menu) then either connect locally or via remote desktop, make sure the player zone is selected (the one you setup your output device to the B10 for) and try to play a track (on the Id without JRemote).
In full GUI mode there will be a message box with more information about why it can't play.
Thanks.

I attempted to change the zone but it repeatedly changed itself back each time.  I followed the instructions within whatever "error" boxes came up but always ran into an issue that could not be resolved.  I am preparing to travel and will get back to this in about 5 days (with all of the details).

The thing that I am having difficulty comprehending (and I'm hoping that you my share your thoughts regarding), is that everything was running perfectly (from both my laptop and Gizmo) for about a 4-5 hour period a few nights ago, and the next day (without my altering anything), the current issues presented.  How, or why, would this have happened?

I'm basically thinking that the Id had no trouble accessing my library, and then it did.  It seems that it should be able to access it on an ongoing basis without the kind of effort that seems to be required!  (Smooth Sailing...)

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply.
You might want to check the settings on JRemote to see if the "Server follows app zone changes" or "App follows server zone changes" is set.

I am not utilizing JRemote.  I am using Gizmo.  I find nothing like what you describe within the menu for Gizmo.  I continue to experience the same behavior as previously described.  This behavior is displayed even when Gizmo is not activated.

Thanks

Sorry I missed the Gizmo reference. Gizmo just selects the playback zone in the Mode selection.

I need to understand the whole chain. Can we go over this again?

You are connecting to what with Gizmo? (Id, other PC, etc)
Your Id is using a Local library, A library server library, Connecting to a NAS as a file share, Connecting to a NAS as DLNA ?
You are trying to play in Gizmo to where?
You are not using zoneswitch anywhere are you?
On the Id can while not trying to do playback, can you do function 10 from the main text menu, post here the supported sample rates and sample formats for the B10?

Thanks!

                                                                                                      Images
                                                                                                      Video...(etc.)

When I click on the (higher) "Id", my playback selection(s) appear.
When I highlight the sub listed "Id" (Library Server), on a "Manage the library 'Id-1C697A...(Library Server)" page it basically states that there is no library loaded.  When I click on the "Load Library" tab, I get a box that states: "The Server is a different version or not a Library Server.  Please update both machines to the current version and ensure Library Server is running on the proper port" When I click the "OK" tab in this box I get an "Error Loading Library" box.  If I click "OK" in this box, I get the previous box, and just move back and forth between these two boxes. The only exit from this (to avoid MC freezing), is to click the "X" in the upper right corner of the box.

I am uncertain what you are asking:
"Your Id is using a Local library, A library server library, Connecting to a NAS as a file share, Connecting to a NAS as DLNA ?"     In MC Tools>Options>Media Network: "Use Media Network to share this library and enable DNLA" is checked, and "Authentication" is checked.

I do not know what "zoneswitch" is, so I am probably not using it!

Sampling rates: 44100, 48000, 88200, 96000 Hz
Sample formats: S24_3LE

Thank You!

The machines in the upper section of Playing Now are Renderers.  Those in the lower section are Servers.  You could read about this in the "Using DLNA -- Finding DLNA Renderers and Servers" section here:
https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DLNA

The Server whose library you're trying to Load may not have any media or it may be blocked by a firewall.

Thanks Bob,

No worries!

Gizmo is set to play from my laptop (server) to Id.

On my laptop,in MC, With "Playing Now" clicked, the tree (menu on the left), appears as follows:

The physical location of the music tracks to be played is on your laptop then?
As Jim said, the upper entry is the renderer, you won't be using the lower entry unless you actually have the music tracks physically on the Id.
Now if you connect to the laptop with Gizmo and try to play to the Id and it doesn't play or the zone goes away the problem is the configuration of the Id.

Given the info from your audio configuration on the Id, you will want to do the following configuration in DSP studio (see attachments)

Thank You Bob!

I just wanted to enjoy some music... so I set this task aside for a few days...

Yes, the music files that I wish to play to the Id are stored on my laptop.

The "Output Format" settings on the Id were as you suggested, so I left them alone.  I adjusted the "Device Settings" to reflect your suggestion, rebooted, and attempted play.  The selected tracks appear in MC on my laptop when the upper "ID" (as renderer) is highlighted, but the behavior is the same: no sound, with the tracks advancing and playback stopping once the final selected track is "playing"

This occurs either with or without my utilizing Gizmo.  Gizmo is playing from my laptop (Eric + my key). to the Id.  I close and reboot MC and/or Gizmo with each attempt at playback.

At one time I had noticed that the "Audio Output" setting had changed from "ASIO" to "Direct Sound" (in MC, on my laptop), so I tried going back and forth with this as well.

I am looking forward to the solution, as I think (in concept), the Id will offer an excellent solution for me!

...back to some listening (wired) for now...

Odd, it should just work. I use a similar setup everyday.
On the laptop would you please check the DLNA settings?
There are two places to look, the server settings in Tools->Media Network->Add or configure DLNA servers...
You can have more than one server but the best option for sending to the Id is to use "Original Format" for the Audio settings.
Have you changed anything in the server from the default other than that?
The second place to check is the zone for the Id on the laptop. Right-Click on the ID-xxxxx entry and look at the DLNA controller options (none should be checked) and the Associate with DLNA server option. There will only be one here if you don't have more that one.
Thanks.

Bob,
When I took a look, the setting for Audio Mode was "Specified output format only when necessary".  I changed this to "Original".    The Display Name is "Generic DLNA".  The "Title Expression" setting displays as an empty field (nothing displayed).  The only other setting that I find (other than "Customize Views"), is the "Format" setting.  I found this set to "PCM 16 bit".  I tried all of the available options.

On the Id (in the MC menu on my laptop), for DLNA Controller Options, "Ignore Transport Events" was checked.  I unchecked this option so now nothing is checked.  For the "Associate with DLNA Server" there appears: "only one server, used by default".  This appears in "lightened" type, and no adjustment is available.

Unfortunately, the behavior remains the same, both directly from MC on the laptop, and utilizing Gizmo...

Thank You!
