CDRW data burn problems - nothing written
« on: May 02, 2003, 09:21:13 am »

I updated to the latest MC9 that was available yesterday (166? I'm not at that system now), but also tried 165.  MC9 goes thru all the motions that it is burning a data cdrw, but when complete there is nothing on the disk (and "test but do not burn" is NOT enabled).  Using the exact same process with a cdr works fine.  And burning to cdrw using XP's native function works OK.  No errors show up in XP's Event Log.

Burner is Yamaha 2200E.  Again, am not at the system now so can't post config details.  Just wondering if anyone else is having probs burning data cdrw's.

I had the same problem but my disc didn't even finish.  I got an error Invaild CDb field about ten tracks in...only the ten tracks hadn't actually recorded.  This worked fine in I think 163/4 as I burned a CD on Tuesday.

Adam

PS I was using the Hard Disk folder structure which could have caused the CDb error...not sure

Actually I, too, had some that did not finish - the cdrw data burn would lockup part way through.   I only had 3 (admittedly older) cdrw's to play with, and 2 of them had lockup problems at exactly the same place (first song, half way through).  Then when trying to cancel or end task MC9 those cdrw's became unusable - would error when trying to erase, etc.  So I did not know if I was fighting a system problem or what.

But now that cdr data burns work fine, and cdrw data burns work ok in xp I suspect something is awry with MC9.

Is this working ok now in build 168? I can't reproduce it here.

Thanks,

No it is now worse Im afraid John.  I have just tried burning a data CDRW.  I burned one on Wednesday without any problems at all.  Today it gets to the 2nd track and hangs.  It is only in the last 3 or so builds that this has manifested.  This is not good.  My CDRW has never hjad any problems in any build going right back to when I started beta testing round about version 9.0.70.  These are the first ever burning problems I have had.  Here is my info:

Media Center Registered 9.0.168 -- C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\

Looks like I am going to have to go back to NERO for burning Data CDs which is a shame seeing as how I was using MC for all my burning up til thursday...

NoCodeUK,

You can try this:
1. Install the last working MC version (where CD-RW burns worked)
2. Grab/save the CDWriter.ocx file from that build (where MC is installed)
3. Install the latest version of MC
4. Replace the latest version of MC's CDWriter.ocx file with the one you saved
5. Test to see if that works for you

Cheers Z, I will see if that works.  It is now even burning in Test Mode at the moment...

I have disabled XPs burning but just need to wait for NERO to finsh burning this CD.  Has something changed in recent builds that would mean XPs burning would need to be switched off as like I say this was working okay last week...

Code...

When's the last time you did a total uninstall/reboot/reinstall? While MANY would say this is unnecessary, I beg to differ. I think it can clear up phantom problems when no one else can reproduce them. Also, I take it your running 5.5.10.20 of Nero (I believe the latest)?

If you send me an email (and have some time), I can send you test versions of the writer control to see if we can pinpoint the problem and make the fix. There were a few changes made last week to support some Yamaha models and it's possible this broke the Mitsumi support.

Thanks,

My Nero is quite outdated actually 5.5.9.0.  I haven't done a uninstall/reboot/reinstall.  Thats my next thing to try

Just tried reinstalling 9.0.163 but this made no difference I know this worked last week but unfortunately I cannot remember what version I was using at the time...  It may have been pew 161 and that is the earliest avaialbe from the ftp site...

Some older versions of Nero conflicted with MJ, I don't see why the same wouldn't be possible with MC. 5.5.10.20 broke as far as UDF is concerned (or something weird is going on). 5.5.10.15A did UDF when I first installed it, then I went to 20, UDF broke, went back to 15A....UDF still broke.

Just did an uninstall/reboot/reinstall and... no better.  Well it was a little better MC got to track 4 this time before bailing ;D  The strange thing is the red light goes out on the drive to so it is not even trying to write to the CDRW any longer...

Just send me an email if you want to test it right now. Otherwise, there will be a build later today with the fix in it.
