Any Tips for new MC-on-Linux-users?
« on: November 13, 2019, 10:48:04 am »

So, I just bought a used Lenovo X230 laptop, put in a 2 TB hard drive, installed Linux Mint and MC 25, and it works fine so far. As new to Linux and this topic, I wonder if there are usefull tips for that kind of set-up. Right now I use JRemote on my Android tablet and the web-interface on my Mac to control MC on the Linux machine. I'm still testing and trying out things, but propably would like to have a programme to also control Linux via my Mac.

Thanks for any tips!

How about using MC on your Mac?

I have a single MC instance on my NAS and MC installed on various Windows, Fedora machines and even one Mac.

Now, I dont technically do remote control. I use it to stream my library from one place. But you could also make it play songs over there on your Linux box instead of streaming them.

You are allowed to activate multiple copies of MC with one License if you own multiple devices. But you need to master license for multiple operating systems.

Or do you want to remote control the Linux Desktop?

You can use MC on a Mac to control MC on another machine.

Here are the possible remotes:

Thanks guys!

I'm fine with MC and it's remote possibilities, but as a newbie with Linux I thought there were some tips for additional settings, special adjustments for Linux, etc. that might improve the set-up.

So far it works fine without adjusting any setting, which makes me a bit "nervous"  ;D

Here's a couple tips...

1) Avoid putting media in folders or files that begin with a period (.) because the Linux file system will treat folders/files beginning with a period as hidden by default, and MC won't import files from those folders/files. I tend to run into this with albums that contain preceding periods in front of the albums name, e.g. ...And Justice For All. Having the periods in the file's metadata isn't an issue though so you don't have to do anything there. I have to use a complex directory regex rule in the Rename, Move, & Copy Files tool on Windows for it to play nice (and avoid creating folders that begin with periods) on Linux and macOS as well as I have all three OSes installed on the same PC. And yes, do note this also applies to macOS as well.

2) If you have your audio device (e.g. a USB DAC) connected to your computer running a Linux distro, make sure you select the hw: or front: output in MC's Options > Audio section to bypass the system mixer if they're available. Don't use system default or the pulse output, as the pulse output resamples everything to 48kHz by default.

Thanks Awesome Donkey,

these are points I will look into this weekend. Especially the name situation of folders! I'll better check other special characters too that might cause trouble. I guess using a Mac for 25 years makes one a bit color blind.
