Media Center 9.0.168 available here
« on: May 02, 2003, 01:42:25 pm »

Media Center 9.0.168 is available.

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter90168.exe

Only report show-stoppers.  We are very close to release.

(minor problems will be addressed with a service release later)

History

1. Changed: Rename from properties won't use "Unknown" logic for directories -- just filenames.
2. Fixed: Hitting stop several times fast during a slow fadeout could cause a crash.
3. Fixed: Copy image to clipboard logic didn't always work properly.
4. Fixed: Media Editor would crash when attempting to save on Win9x / ME.
5. Fixed: Data CD burning wasn't working on some burner models.
6. Fixed: Drag-n-drop of folders with folders in them wouldn't preserve the directory structure properly for a data burn.

The crash reported earlier--regarding switching from a docked to a windowed File Info window (which doof confirmed in the 166 thread)--is still there.  I had to try about 4 times to make it happen, but it did.

Thanks for fixing the other crash (item 2 in your list).

Matt...

Dbl click behavior works fine now but it's not clearing Playing Now when playback is in an idle state. It merely appends the PN list then starts playing the songs that were already there.

Serious Bugs:

1. Attempting to play video files (other than MPEGs) located on a PC running Media Server, from a remote PC using the library served by Media Server results in a variety of errors (detailed many times in other threads), some of which crash Media Center and Media Server. I understand from a prior response that Media Server does not support playing these types of files these files from a Remote PC. If so, an attempt to play them should produce a dialog to that effect, not crash MC/MS or produce other cryptic error messages.

2. I am told that a Remote PC should be able to play an MPEG files served by Media Server. However, attempting to an MPEG video file from a Remote PC results in three successive "Error" dialogs saying "DirectShow: Interface not registered" followed by a "Warning" dialog saying "Media Center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files. Make sure that the path in the Media Jukebox library points to the right location." The file does not play.

3. There are other less serious bugs that I've reported before, but am not doing so here given the instructions to only report showstoppers.

Double-clicking *.cda file in Windows Explorer results in the following error message and failure to open/play file.

"Error restoring Media Center license: Invalid file type [path]"

- MC doesn't skip to the following track in playing now while tagging (in others words: during a tagging operation it continues to play the current track, stops to play at the end of the track and re-start to play the following track only at the end of the tagging operation).

Not a real show stopper.

- MC doesn't refresh the screen during tagging so it seems frozen (it is particularly a big probem for massive tagging operation that could be take minutes/hours)

That could be a real show stopper for new users.

Still can't rip my CDs with Chinese song titles into mp3s, after initialising, it just hangs during the copying phase with no progress on the progress bar.  Strange that when I try to use external encoder for the same CD, it copies ok but then it displays "fail to import", I have set up lame as the external encoder with the alt preset standard switch.

This isn't a show stopper, but I thought I'd mention it.

When installing Media Center 9.0 the following registry entry is added:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt\Save with Download Manager..."

MenuExt isn't valid when under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key group so this entry is ignored.  The location should be:

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt\Save with Download Manager..."

Download Manager itself set and removes the registry entry in the correct place when the "Settings->Disable Browser Integration" option is checked and unchecked.
Only the install program places it in the wrong spot.

This must be a show-stopper.

I can not play any CDs !! I tried playing a number of CDs in either of two drivers (one DVD-ROM and another DVD-RW) and when I attempt to play a CD, Media Center goes between

Buffering..
Waiting
Buffering..
Waiting
Buffering..
Waiting

Switching between these every second or so.

I can play CDs just fine using Windows Media Player.

I tried ripping CDs but that also does not work.

Please HELP!!

thanks,
Osho

This is the first time I have tried TV Tuner functionality in Media Center and it seems severly broken to me.

When I watch a channel, I hear that TV sound is echoed. So, all TV sound is continously repeating itself and it becomes impossible to watch.

Also, when I click on the Watch button to watc a channel, it crashes Media Center. If I click on STOP button, it crashes Media Center.

I am using tuner in ATI's All in Wonder 8500DV tuner card. I have their latest Catalyst 3.2. I have latest version of DirectX (9.0a, I believe). As per ATI AIW 8500DV's manual's instruction; I have connected TV's sound out to my sound card's line in.

I can watch TV fine using ATI's TV player and ShowShifter.

Ideally, I would like to be able to use Media Center for everything so I am interested in getting this working right.

thanks,
Osho

I've had this problem for the past 4 or 5 builds, I'd say...

MC randomly forgets its size/position settings when I launch it. I'll set it to where I want it to be (stretched a bit wider and in the bottom left corner of my screen) and it will remember this for the next few launches or so. But then, sometimes I'll launch it and it will revert to a fairly small window size and position in the center of my screen. I haven't found a pattern to it yet and I know I never had this problem until the last several builds I've used.

When burning a data cdrw the burn hangs, sometimes part way through the first track (even if there is only ONE track being burned when testing) or one time it burned many tracks but then hung right at the end with some strange error message - sorry I could not write it down.  2 cdrw's were destroyed either during the burn or while trying to cancel out of it - they won't erase nor are recognized at all.  However, all audio cdr's always burn fine - never a problem.

Update: OK I've tried burning just one track on a data cdrw.  While the UI shows the burning progress as hanging, if I leave it a while then Cancel (which also hangs), and reboot, the track WAS really copied as shown in Windows Explorer and MC. So there seems it is the user interface that is hanging/not updating.

Media Center hangs on playback fairly consistently under the following conditions:

1. MC running as mini-me, playing a list of mp3 files.
3. Hit pause button.
4. Leave it paused for a while. (several minutes)
5. Hit play button.

At this point, playback of track will continue, but within one second the application will freeze, and playback will stop.  When this happens, I've been forced to kill the process and restart it.

I have thus far been unable to reproduce this problem with mega-me.  I have been able to reproduce it pretty easily with mini-me, however, using several different skins.  It doesn't lock up every time I try it, but it's definitely happening more than half the time.

This is not new behavior that appeared with version 168.  I've been seeing this for a while now, with several different versions of the application.  I originally reported this for build 165, but have been able to do some additional testing, and confirm that it doesn't seem to be a problem using mega-me.

Show Stopper - When I attempt to delete a track from the "Playing Now" track list by holding down Shift and pressing Delete, and selecting to delete it from the library and from the disk, Media Center crashes.  If I try to delete files from a different window, it works OK.

In my opinion, crashes that happen repeatably on fairly common tasks are show stoppers.  But I bet it'll be easy to fix.

Version 168 is a backwards step versus 166 as far as TV capture is concerned...

On 166 I could set the enable still capture, and actually capture a still from TV.

On version 168 I can still enable the feature, when when I ask for a still to be captured, I do not get one.

If I leave the option enabled, version 168 still kills my system when MC restarts - just like version 166.

With version 166 if I disable the feature in the registry before starting MC, then set it again in MC after starting the TV Viewer all was fine - but not in 168.

Could MC not test the registry setting when it initialises, but test it as part of the starting TV viewer and the set it then?  I believe that this would then make everything work!

Thanks.

Since I installed Media Center 9.0.168 I find that I can now rip and play CD's even in digital playback.
I have not noticed any announcement regarding this.
All I can say to whoever was responsible is thank you very much. For me Media Center is now complete

.168 is good. Everything seems to work perfectly, including cd-burn, autorip, conversions and exotic characters.

PROBLEM: I just did a clean install of 168, and mjextman.exe wasn't installed.

BUG: With double click behaviour set to "Replace playing now (single)", double clicking on a track in Hairstyle adds all visible tracks to PN. See here

Hello,

Thanks for this new version. It seems the Visualization and Trackinfo part are still incomplete compare to version 8, both of them do not support anymore the access to Custom1/3 fields. same for the newly created but very important field "Composer".

Also regarding the rating, the new presentation is nice nut it takes more space in term of columns that the previous. Can the way rating is shown (1 digit / 5 o) be customizable in the option ?

On an another hand, I found a usability issue in the way MC behave between sound and image.
When a music play list is played, if you dble click on image or a "playlist"of image to make a slideshow, the music stops. It is very diffucult to set up and update a slideshow while keeping the music playing.
I think it would be good, if image and music play list would be separated and if the "show" button will be accessible in the tree window.
Also to keep up with other competitive slidesshows and image album, you new to give access to field display (overlay) in the slide show.
Regards

PROBLEM: I just did a clean install of 168, and mjextman.exe wasn't installed.

What do you mean by that? Did you check MC's directory and the file was not their, or did you double click on a file and the system informed you that it can't find mjextman.exe?
