Can not sync to ipod classic 160 GB anymore
« on: December 01, 2019, 12:10:42 pm »

Hi,

I have synced with my ipod 160GB for years without any problem. The latest MC was MC22. But now, when I want to sync in MC25 it donīt work anymore. File not supported in the status column. Does someone know anything about that? I then quick changed to MC22 which I still have in my PC Thank god! And that works fine.
Do I miss something in MC25?
After I synced in MC22 I started MC25 and the same again. File not supported.

Best Regards

Are you using the the 32-bit or 64-bit version of MC25? If the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version instead.

Handheld Sync works fine for a Classic iPod using the 64bit version these days, as it is just treated like a hard drive in Windows, so visible in the same way with MC. I would dare to say most Android devices work with Handheld Sync, but there still seem to be a few that pose a problem. Hendrik has fixed lots.

The "File not supported" in the status column means that you have a setting wrong.

Check the "Drive & Devices > {your device name} > Options > Files, Paths & More > Supported Types" or "Options > Handheld > Files, Paths & More > Supported Types"

If that is set to "*", then all file types are supported. If that is set to "mp3;flac;alac" then those three file types are supported.

I just set mine to "*" for simplicity, and control what is transferred using the Playlists I sync. But the intent is that if you are syncing to a device that only supports mp3, for example, then that setting should be set to "mp3".

Hi Roderick,
I have the ipod classic and i think it supports some apple file format. Maybe it is Alac or m4a? I donīt remember. But if I write  "*" all formats will be supported? OK, I will try that. I am out on travel at the moment but I will give it a try when back home again.

Thanks Donkey, I think I use the 64-bit. I can try that. However I will try Rodericks suggestion before I try yours because heīs is more easy to try :-)

Dear Roderick,
I have now tried to find the settings you mention above but canīt find that. If I try from the Drive and device > My ipod > Options > Files, Paths & More is not there?! Same If I go there the other way from Options > Handheld > Files. Paths and More is not there. Is it MC25 you have?
I have also looked through all settings in JRiver and I can not find Files, Paths & others anyway.

Hi again Roderick, I found this setting that works for me: Drivers & Devices > Options > Conversions > Audio > Mode Specified output format only when necessary. And then Encoder: Apple Lossless (ALAC).
Does that look correct? It works anyway, JRiver started to sync right away :-)

Is it MC25 you have?

Yes, I'm running MC25.0.114. But I am very sure that the "Files, Paths & More" section of the Handheld device Options settings has been there for a very long time, and many versions. As you have installed MC25, it should be there.

Some of the settings have changed in there recently, but nothing has been removed. See image.

I guess it is possible that an iPod Classic gets special handling as it only supports specific file types, but I don't have one so can't confirm that.

I found this setting that works for me: Drivers & Devices > Options > Conversions > Audio > Mode Specified output format only when necessary. And then Encoder: Apple Lossless (ALAC).

That's fine. That may be what you had in MC22 as well. Sometimes with an upgrade to MC25, some of the Handheld Sync settings were "lost" due to the settings changes. As above, the iPod Classic only supports certain file types, ALAC (a codec) being the primary lossless format, which can be in an M4A file type (a container).

So you are good to go.
