Media Center hangs when opening "Rename, Move, & Copy Files"
« on: December 01, 2019, 07:56:05 pm »

I am trying to organize my collection and everytime I open "Rename, Move, & Copy Files" with F6, it sits and hangs for about 20 seconds. I tried rebooting to no avail. I checked and have the latest update of 25.0.123.

I just got a new iMac i9 with 40 GBs of RAM so not too happy with this slowdown. I do work with many files that are on a network, but even when I select local files, it seems to drag too. This happens even if I just select one file and click F6. It does eventually unfreeze but it is exceedingly irritating.

I purchased the update to 26 so hoping that will help when it's released, but not that confident about it. I didn't have this problem with my previous system, which was an AMD hackintosh. And the network server was exactly the same as the one I'm using now.

I ran a benchmark for performance test.

Well I'm not updated to Catalina yet and I'm on version 25.0.123 anyways.

It's possible your NAS does not have the drives spun up yet when you do RM&C.  So there's a delay when you open RM&C while MC tries to "see" the files on the NAS.

Try playing one of the files first.  Then do RM&C.  See if it's any different.  Just a theory.

I'm on MacOS 10.14.6

It seems to be pausing a lot less now. These are all image files btw.

I am only updating this old topic to state I found the problem... my NAS was slow. Once I changed to a modern dedicated NAS system, this issue went completely away. I found out the slow ZFS FreeNAS I had was slowing down nearly every app in MacOS so I'm happy I resolved this issue... too bad it cost me about $700 to fix but at least I know the problem now.
