I'm getting light static with files above 16/44
« on: January 26, 2020, 08:00:28 pm »

I am getting a light static sound with any file above 16/44: 24/96 etc and DSD. I seem to have had this in the past and fixed it but I'll be darned if I can remember what I did to correct or fix this. Windows 10 64bit. JRiver 26 64 bit
Headphone playback from Desktop Computer to USB Wyred4Sound DAC 2v2SE into Cavalli Liquid Fire amp. HELP!!

What is the processor/speed of the CPU on your laptop?

I uninstalled/installed driver and moved USB around. Seems to have abated but..........the one file I was playing was a Beach Boys 24/192 download that presents the static quite a bit whereas others pretty much nada. I sometimes hear a tiny click or pop w/DSD file playback.

Computer is old but I've updated it with SSD, maxed RAM, added USB 3.0 etc. Do you think the processor is older and not keeping up?
I've been planning on building a new desktop rig but since this has been fine I've been putting it off. Time to change?

It's not terrible but it is suspect.  I get the same thing but under different conditions with my old i5-based MacMini, so I appreciate the problem.  OTOH, I do not get it with my other machine using a i7-7700K@4.2GHz.

I've come across it under other situations it is consistent with slowish processing.  Have you run a Benchmark test with MC?

I just retired my 2009 era Gateway Netbook. It plays high rez audio up to 24/192 and DSD flawlessly even though it has a Jmark of only about 450. That is on Windows 7, so I cannot comment on Windows 10. I am not using any DSPs, as those could clearly cause problems. So, my experience is that you do not need a high end processor to play high rez audio on JRiver.  Of course, it may be different on Windows 10 and with different systems.

You might want to play with the audio buffer sizes. And, set Windows Defender to ignore JRiver.

Yeah, you should be able to playback audio up to 24/192 and bitstream DSD just fine. Where you'll likely encounter issues on a machine that's not too powerful is on-the-fly conversions, especially DSD to PCM (or vice versa).

I had ASIO driver and was listening to DSD. When it finished I could hear this weird whirling/chuffing noise!?! I changed to WASAPI and it disappeared. What in hell was that?
I am still getting micro static after non-DSD track ends. Really prominent with 24/192 for some reason. Again I seemed to remember having this in the past, corrected it but can't remember what I did. I've gone thru all the usual checks with Windows apps and Options settings. All I can think of is aging computer. Would power supply cause this? It to me is the big weak link in this computer.
I'm going to start putting together a parts list for a new build.

The light static sound (like a vinyl record) before the track starts, ends and low volume passages) has not gone away. I've tried a previous JRiver build-25, uninstalled and installed drivers, and hopefully have Windows 10 like its supposed to be. I've been running this same rig for years. I seem to recall something like this once, changed the USB port and it was gone but not now.

What happens if you test from Windows Control Panel > Sounds?

I get the test tones clear until I set the DAC to 16/44 on the test sounds to be used on shared mode and could hear the static. Once I changed it to 24/192 the static went away on the test sounds but remains in playback? I have no clue why it did that. It seems there is something simple I'm not doing.

In MC, try WASAPI and Direct Sound.  The wiki has a topic on Audio Setup.

Different computer (Big RAM and CPU). Zero difference. I'm starting to think somehow it is the DAC. I have no other solutions. If I switch 192 to 96 the sound disappears. It does not appear on 384 or DSD. Seems to be just 192!?!?! No clue.

I've been running WASAPI with the same settings on WIKI. I tried Direct Sound, ASIO. All the same. I tried using Foobar to check if it was something I did on JRiver and its the same there.

I ran LatencyMon and yes I have it. Most coming from Windows DirectX. I have disabled everything I can and gone through every article I can find. Still has the static sound from a vinyl record at start of songs. I know this happened somewhere in an update in the last few months but why I do not know. I never spotted this earlier because I wasn't listening to 24/192 files which for some reason have it the most along with some DSF files. At this point all I can think about is building a new computer or saving for a music server. I've read many posts all over the internet with the same problem and no solution.

I give up. I'm sending the Wyred 4 Sound DAC 2v2SE back to have them look at it. I bought a Chord Qutest in the mean time which should be here in two days.
