+1E9.  I'm also one of those JRemote users who has been patiently awaiting a long-overdue update to address the long-known bugs with the JRemote IOS app.

I'm experiencing problems too. For example, when I open the app, and select "Audio" or "Video", the wheel spins but it doesn't show anything. Is that the kind of problem you're experiencing? This didn't happen before. It only became a problem after an update.

Similar issues. The global search box (on the left hand side) does not show even though one can type in the search characters (although can’t see them) nd search works ( 0resuming you are a good typist)

A well-known and off-discussed bug, it's been a problem since iOS 13 came out in September 2019. This at the top of my "wish list" of bug fixes. I use this app every day, and the broken global search is a true PITA.

not to mention any video playback immediately crashes the app

in prior versions we could only watch a few mins of video before it froze.

would appreciate some kind of update, even if it’s simply at the bottom of the priority list.

it amazes me the competition has regular ios releases of their apps,  and sadly i have given them money instead because that is all i can do to have a “complete” but fractured experience.

It's not at the bottom of the list.

I think it would be most helpful if you could add a bit of detail as to what "It's not at the bottom of the list" means in terms of when your long-suffering IOS customers can expect an update. It's really not an unreasonable request, especially after this long without either an updated app or an indication of when it will be.

Seriously, it's been a long time. How many things are on the list and when do you expect to get to these bugs?

- Streaming video to "this device" immediately crashes the app
- playback controls are overlaid on album art making them practically invisible

it seems there is no focus on it. There was also a proposal from my side and other users to make a new version or a major update with all fixed problems, and it would be OK to pay for it. But it seems this will never happen.

I asked Bob, who has made a number of recent changes to maintain JRemote.  Here's what he said:

"I talked with Hendrik about the video issue, the answer may be never.

"Similar about the UI. I've been working on it but iOS 13 broke stuff and I'm not getting very far in getting it to behave, it's possible the code is just too old to work the way it was constructed."

I'm sorry we may not be able to help.  We haven't given up.

It's probably not that simple. JRiver recently invested in the development time for JRemote2 for Android, which took over 6 months to get to a working and released state. Focusing development on a JRemote for iOS rewrite right now would (again) take some of the development focus away from JRiver Media Center itself, which *could* potentially hurt/hinder the development of the MC release cycle and the intended features not making it in. Remember, JRiver is a small group of developers and their main focus is on JRiver Media Center itself as it's the main product (so it has the main development focus).

While JRiver may eventually rewrite JRemote for iOS, doing so in a somewhat short time frame after getting JRemote2 for Android developed and released released may not be desirable for investment at the current time. I personally wouldn't expect the investment to happen in the short term, maybe in a year or two? At least, that's what I'm guessing.

P.S. If they did develop a JRemote2 for iOS, it wouldn't be as feature rich as JRemote2 for Android because of iOS limitations and restrictions.

Given internal resource constraints, perhaps JRiver could commission a replacement IOS app for JRemote?    I'm with maky100 - I'd be happy to buy such a product.

Same features as existing ios version would be enough, but with working search functionality. Ok, Cloudplay would be nice  ;D

Which, of course, would require investment of money to hire a developer. Besides, they'd probably want to build such an app in-house instead of hiring a third-party to do so.

But that doesn't mean that shouldn't stop any interested developer(s) in developing a remote app for iOS, just like JRemote originally was.

Is JRiver looking into possibilities to run the Android JRemote app on iOS through some kind of virtual machine? Just asking..

Don't think that is possible.  You *can* "mirror" Android apps from an android device to an iOS device - but what's the point?  If you had the android device to begin with you would just use that!

Running native android however is not currently possible.  I think there was an android port - iDroid but you would have to jailbreak your iphone.  I've looked around as well!  Now I wonder - there may be cross-compilers between java and swift/objective-c which could make some of it easier to "port", but I expect a lot of what we need is low-level stuff for video/audio playback which I expect is the real challenge.

By far not kidding. The essence of the messaging I am getting from you guys in this thread is that JRemote iOS is “too much trouble” for you, whereas you are in love with your new Android v2 app. So if there would be a VM solution then “a lot of trouble” approach would be still be an easier path to a solution than your current “too much trouble” approach..

Something like this does not exist in any acceptable manner.

You can't just compile it for a different OS, and you can't run it with some sort of "emulation". And to top it all of, cross-platform application solutions usually don't allow anywhere close to the control and integration we would want for good media playback, rather then just some generic web-based UI that those cross-platform things fall back on.

And re-writing the app may not solve all the issues just as much as everyone hopes it would.

The problem with video playback, for example, isn't strictly a bug in our application as such. We produce a fully compliant video stream, we even validated it with Apples owns validation tools and there isn't even as much as a warning, yet when you play it on iOS, the player component we use, which comes from the OS itself, decides to be dumb and load more media into memory then it can handle, eventually crashing due to running out of memory (often quite quickly, sometimes after a few seconds)

I realize for a user this distinction makes not much of a difference, but the problem for us is that we have a fully compliant video stream, which works everywhere else, but Apple decides to just fail and die with their provided video player component. Yes, our stream is not the most common type of stream, since its neither fully "VOD" nor "Live", but there is a specification for this type of stream, and Apple wrote this specification - and their validator accepts it with no complaints. We are, afterall, using a video format developed by Apple themselves.

Re-writing the application would not solve this, unless we get an entirely different video player not based on Apples broken component. And if we had such a thing, we could possibly also just plug it into the current JRemote for iOS.

The alternative is to entirely re-design how we deliver video to JRemote on iOS, which is a very complex process with full of unknown factors (like, "will this work at all") which we won't know about until such a time when we already spent a lot of time working on it so we can test it. We do plan to do this, since if it works it may also help improve other video consumers, but its not a short-term task. In the meantime, Bob is trying to figure out if we can fix it in the JRemote app itself, but it may not be.

For everyone who is thinking about to switch to Android. I have both versions. Comparing both (at the moment) is the same to compare a Porsche (iOS version) with a VW Golf (Android version). Sorry to all who have a VW, it is only an example.

what makes serving video from media center so different that jremote crashes yet Plex, Emby, and others seem to have no issues whatsoever on iOS?

even mo4media when it was developed for iOS worked.  and remains a bummer that he shut active dev down...

IMO, it's the other way around comparing JRemote2 for Android to JRemote for iOS, JRemote2 is superior, hands down.

Maybe you're using a cheap Android phone.  The camera and screen on my Samsung Android phone has always been better than those of the friends who have iPhones.  Just one example.

Apple has also made it nearly impossible for developers, for another.

I think our users are about evenly divided.

No working search function (main problem in ios too, I know), no assets ...
performance is OK on a new samsung tablet. I compared it one month ago, maybe there was an update in the meantime and it is better now.
Let me say, I am not an Apple fanboy, but for now there is no reason to change to JRemote2, as said, my opinion.

Here's my $0.02. I never use JRemote to play video on an iOS device. I don't care if it can do this or not. I just use it to control MC running on a headless Mac. For me it's just an iPad-based control panel. If the lack of video playing ability is hindering an update of JRemote, I'd be fine with dropping that feature altogether.

Based on my experience as a software developer, I have to believe that fixing UI problems like a missing text field for global search is orders of magnitude easier than fixing video playback problems.

Another perspective: JRemote is *the* reason I use MC. I've been using this combo for years, faithfully buying updates to MC. The MC/JRemote combo is the best audio playing software I've ever used. If there were no JRemote, or its quality seriously degraded with no chance of an upgrade, I'd find another audio tool to use and stop paying for JRiver.

I'd be fine with paying for a new version of JRemote, stripped of video playing abilities, with serious attention paid to UI issues and crashes.

End of my $0.02.

I also view and purchased JRemote IOS / MC with annual updates as an integrated value proposition.  I also run MC's audio features headless, mainly using JRemote either to listen to my library remotely or for home music playback on my stereo.

I was able to do a bit of work on JRemote iOS yesterday on the video.
It doesn't work on iOS13 because the video player API we were using has been removed.

I'm looking into the newer API and have it starting to work but it's not a drop-in replacement.

No one needs to tell us how important these apps are for JRiver's use.  We do understand.

Just wanted to add a +1 to the idea that JRiver + JRemote for "audio only" is my use case as well.  I use JRiver in my audiophile playback setup and JRemote is a very easy remote solution.

I was able to do a bit of work on JRemote iOS yesterday on the video.
It doesn't work on iOS13 because the video player API we were using has been removed.

I'm looking into the newer API and have it starting to work but it's not a drop-in replacement.

I've got the video working properly on both iPhones and iPads now.
Trying to figure out the search before I put out a build. There is something in iOS13 that's preventing the view from appearing even though it is actually there...
