Hello,

Sorry if this is a newbie question but I could not find any info on it. None that I could understand anyway..

Could someone please tell me if I need my whole wifi network turned on to get the apps (IOS or Android) to work or is it possible to make an ad hoc wifi connection between my device and my wifi-enabled Windows 10 Pro HTPC and leave my wifi router switched off as I often do?

Many thanks,

Probably.

Why do you turn it off?

Yes I know that but is it possible?

Because I am on a budget and also for environmental reasons, I try to conserve as much power as possible. That's why I turn it off. As you may know routers, modems and stereos, DVRs, TVs, etc. running on standby ("phantom power") can run into the hundreds of dollars each year. It sure adds up!

It probably will work.  I've never tried it.  But MC uses the Internet for other purposes.  You will need to try it to see if it works to your satisfaction.

A wifi router should cost a couple of dollars a month.  Yes, I'm aware of how power is used in a home.

Thanks JimH

I will give it another go using the network to establish it's IP address and see if I can't set up a separate ad hoc network in Windows, thereby bypassing the router.

I will post any progress.

Sticking to WiFi always-on method for now.
