Hello --

Super newbie here, so pardon my ignorance.  The goal is to play from a large library of digital music.

I have an older Intel NUC with Ubuntu 16 and trial copy of MC 26 on it.  I want to keep this near my Marantz PM7000N receiver, connected by optical cable.  No screen, keyboard, or mouse; to be controlled by either my wife's iPad or my Android tablet.

It seems there are a whole bunch of remote options.  We listen to a lot of classical music.  I'm dreaming of a features wish-list:

It would be nice to have a spreadsheet kind of layout, with user-defined columns of metadata, including performer, composer, composer's catalog index (like BWV 248), composition title, movement title, etc.  Images of the album covers are wastes of space.  Super-super-duper cool would be link to PDFs of the album's accompanying digital booklets.

Am I completely dreaming?

Thanks in advance,
John Kwasnik

I believe this is all possible with Media Center, although it may take some effort to implement. Check out the wiki: https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Main_Page.

If you mean bit-depth and sample rate of audio files, yes it does.

I am curious out of the remotes available which one is the most user friendly?  I am looking to only remotely control MC 28 on my PC from my listening position and the more functionality the better.  I would love to be able to control the DSP controls and be able to adjust treble and base from a remote location.  I am trying Jremote2 and it does not allow me to do this...

Hi, everyone.

Does JRemote have the ability to control the 10-foot interface / Theater View? I am building an HTPC and was looking for a remote that works with Theater View since the physical remotes seem to have been discontinued.

Thanks.

Don't overlook Windows Remote Desk Top.
I have a laptop which is connected to the Media Center Server and related audio components via Remote Desk Top.
I can then - from my favorite chair - run the Media Center Server / Application directly via the laptop - about as good a remote as you can get.
Same controls - nothing new to learn.

Tremote (on the wiki) is a native way for JRiver to do that.

Perhaps not the right place, but does anyone have any insight/summary on the use of these vs JRiver for Android for use on a phone for playing files remotely?  Specifically Jremote2 vs JRFA?  I got JRFA a while back but it's a little rocky.  I'm curious about Jremote2...

Don't overlook the combination of BubbleUPnP Server running on the MC server computer and Android BubbleUPnP on a phone (https://bubblesoftapps.com/bubbleupnpserver2/).

MO 4Media is currently my go to Android player (lovely interface), JRemote2 is second, but there are times when they just will not connect to the MC server, or more commonly hesitate to connect to the first track.  In nearly every case the Bubble combo works flawlessly.  For example, today there was a MC popup message on my server re bit rates and a pending Windows update.  MO 4Media Android failed to connect.   Bubble blasted right through, no problem serving the MC media to Android.

Excuse me if this is out of scope for the thread, but BubbleUPnP has been a trusted and reliable 3rd party app for many years.  It works very reliably as a player with MC, in addition to its Chromecast Audio transcoding to DLNA for MC.  It is still under active development and has very responsive support.   Re OP @jkwasnik's Reply #1 dreamlist, probably not, but reliability is excellent nowadays within my home Windows and wi-fi environment experience.

3/8/2024 FYI, I just discovered that Android BubbleUPnP has a variety of good looking dark modes.  Worth a try if you're a fan of dark UIs and Bubble.  More > settings > Look and feel > Light or dark > Dark etc.

I mean, I can understand where you're coming from. Though to be honest my experience with BubbleUPnP has been a bit... annoying to deal with.

My main issues with BubbleUPnP on Android are 1) it is very slow at loading the list of my music library's artists (which is over 1,200) compared to JRemote2, MO 4Media and Panel with BubbleUPnP taking up to 30 seconds to load the entire list from A to Z. The remote apps on the other hand must cache this or handle it differently or something, because it loads the entire list near instantly. Same for albums (over 10,000) too, it's not just the artists list that's slow to load in BubbleUPnP. 2) is with how it handles now playing, you can select a track (e.g. track 2 of a 10 track album) and have it play the selected track and add the remaining tracks of the album to the now playing playlist. The problem with that is a) it doesn't add tracks before it like you'd expect it to do if it was playing back an entire album and b) it removes played tracks from the playlist. I don't think there's any options to play a certain song and add all tracks (including preceding tracks) to the now playing list. This one is almost a dealbreaker for me, it's quite annoying.

That said, JRemote2 and MO 4Media aren't perfect either. Since the last JRemote2 update I've been getting a lot more sudden, silent crashing during playback. This typically happens likely due to my play "style", I change tracks pretty quickly sometimes (and sometimes randomly different artists/albums) and the app doesn't seem to like that. I've had to attempt to curve my speed at changing tracks in a vain attempt to try to avoid the crashes, but it still happens. It's even worse with MO 4Media, it'll fully silently stop playback and crash very quickly using Exo when changing tracks. Switching to Android System allows it to last a little longer, eventually it'll soft crash with the notification that it lost connection, but you can somewhat recover from it (though it stops playback of the current track). I thought the root cause might be some sort of an issue with either using MC for Linux as the server or any Media Network settings I use for the server. I recently switched to a N305 NUC with Windows 11 Pro and setup my MC server from scratch with all default settings... and it still happens. At first I thought it my be my phone (it ran Android 13, recently updated to Android 14) but it happens with an older Amazon tablet running Android 9, my Nvidia Shield TV running Android 11, Onn 4K TV box running Android 12, etc. I think my quick, random (and rapid) "style" of playing back media on devices is what allows me to (unfortunately) encounter things like this, because I haven't seen anyone else mention it. Maybe it's because I have nearly 150,000 FLAC files (1,200+ artists, 10,700+ albums), hard to say. At some point this year I should be getting fiber in my area, and I plan on redoing my entire network, and I plan on setting up a as-basic-as-possible setup with a MC server and see if I can still get it to happen, I suspect I likely will.

Moral of the story? Nothing's perfect.

Same for albums (over 10,000) too, it's not just the artists list that's slow to load in BubbleUPnP.
Android BubbleUPnP loads all artists and albums nearly instantaneously for me.  But then I only have about 250 artists and a mere 630 digital albums so far (7% of your album collection!).

My main issues with BubbleUPnP on Android are ...
In BubbleUPnP Android I can add any track to the playlist, and then, playing or not, further add entire album(s) (all tracks from same album or different albums) to the playlist by using the header menu item "+ Add" (select an album in the library and click through to its track list view).  To play in order, be sure the "Shuffle" icon to the left of the Player controls is "Off".  Bubble plays the list just fine for me (though admittedly I have not used it a lot).  The playlist remains fully intact after playing and is easily saved on the phone within Bubble. :)

One advantage of MO 4Media, JRemote2, and JRiver Panel is that playlists are bidirectionally auto-synced with the MC server.  Android BubbleUPnP sees the server playlists well enough, but AFAIK copying a playlist from Bubble to the MC server is a manual multi-step file export-import procedure.

I mainly use Bubble when other Android player apps fail.  If the other apps all fail together, while Bubble still works, then more than likely it is a problem with MC, likely DLNA or MC Server related.  Bubble Device Discovery beats MC Device Discovery (and hence all apps that depend on it) hands down in my home wi-fi network.  If only one of the other apps fails, then problem is most likely with that app (very rare nowadays).  If Bubble also fails, then most likely there is an issue with MC's media access or a wider network issue, such as misconfiguration of Windows Defender firewall, the router, the renderer, all system reboot needed, etc.

BTW, the BubbleUPnP Server is always running on my MC server Windows PC since I have Chromecast Audio renderers for which MC requires DLNA transcoding.  It's been rock solid for me over the last year or two at least, requires zero attention.  FYI, there are some interesting networking threads in the BubbleUPnP Google Group.

2/17/2024 Edit for clarity; correct my response to Issue 2).
2/18/2024 Minor edits; add note about playlists.

Recently, in Version 32.0.21 (2/27/2024), JRiver addressed issues related to their server performance and blocking error messages which could cause network device zones to "randomly vanish" or never appear under MC Playing Now.  Since these fixes, the MC server has effectively become much more reliable.   :)

I want to get the Merging Hapi DAC to use with my 3.1 system. https://www.merging.com/products/interfaces/hapi  , but has anyone devised a wireless handheld remote that will do master volume/mute for this MCH DAC? When I suggested issuing such a handheld device to Merging support, Rune or another person argued that Hapi is targeted to the pro audio market and who prefer wirED remotes. Really? Then why did Merging bother submitting the Hapi to a leading high end consumer audio online newsletter for review? https://www.stereophile.com/content/merging-hapi-mkii-multichannel-digital-processor

Instead, Rune’s only alternative suggestion was to add the Anubis hardwired interface (> $2K) or opt for the NADAC ($11K!!), rather than the Hapi for thousands less. THAT is their idea of a sensible solution merely for obtaining master volume/mute remote control? Again, Anubis is a wirED box and with tons of features I’ll never need. I’ve received better customer support from Amazon and Walmart.

JRiver will be my Windows player of choice but I’d rather not use that JRemote app, as my iPhone 7+ is 3” too wide and heavy for my small hands to fumble with. A simple master volume/mute wireless remote-like we've had forever with DVD/BD players-can't be asking too much by now.

Meanwhile, will I lose resolution by using the up/down keys on my wireless keyboard to control the Hapi's master volume via JRiver? If no, then what Windows or other drivers must be installed-AND where-to ensure lossless audio attenuation via keyboard?
