Trailers seem to be not working again, and I don't see any record of youtube or trailer fixes after .53

Getting the "nothing to play" error in both standard and theater mode.
The URL of course plays perfectly in a browser.

Is everyone else seeing this too?

Hi,
I tried to watch a couple of trailers from Theater view and they are all working just fine.
I tried some old and some new movies and I have never watched a trailer from those movies before.

Hmm.  Youtube works for me in theater view, but trailers don't work in theater or standard views.

Mine are working, movie tagging on import however, has been borked for the past few builds, but I don't see anyone else complaining, leading me to believe that this is a 'just me' too, and I can't find the energy to troubleshoot just now

Thanks Marko.  But yes the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable package is already installed, so that's not the issue.

I noticed this happening today as well. If I use webmedia://youtube/ in the Trailer tag it works, but if it's like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4BYMvVvMg0 I get the same error. I'm on MC 26.0.69, Win 10 64bit.

But if I change it to:

Then it plays.

My trailer fields all start http because that's how MCRatings downloads them.  MC used to open URLs starting with http but now it seems it does not.  Does this have something to do with this change in MC25?
3. Changed: When loading URLs from the "Open URL" dialog, they are run through the web media engine so things like YouTube URLs will be handled nicely.

Opening the above http link via Open URL is not handled nicely in the current version, it fails just like in theater view. In older versions it worked.

I've searched extensively, and I can find no mention that renaming URLs to start with webmedia is now a requirement.  Must all video URLs be written that way, or is this a glitch of some kind?

It should be using the webmedia://youtube/..... format. If you have the  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4BYMvVvMg0 in the tags, delete them and rerun Get TV & Movie Info.

I just tested the URL lookup and it worked for "The Matrix", so I assume it works for movies that have the correct metadata on TMDb site.

I couldn't find a specific reference to why the change was made either. From memory it just sort of happened. There was quite a bit of testing and tweaking, and re-running of the Get Movie & TV Info function.

The function probably should be smart enough to recognise the incorrect format and parse the video key from it, then use the correct format. Or maybe MC should only store the key and the function itself should add the URL formatting. It looks like The Movie DB stores and probably provides the full https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=... URL, so MC must already be parsing the video key from that. I could be wrong in that though. I'm just going by the The Movie DB page itself.

Either way, the function probably should have some intelligence to make sure metadata downloaded in the past still works, without having to run Get Movie & TV Info across a whole Library again.

Or maybe MCRatings needs to be changed.

I don't have a problem saying MCRatings needs to be changed.

I also don't have a problem doing a search and replace to fix all the old URLs that no longer work.

But this change broke existing functionality, to wit, being able to open a URL with the File->Open URL command.
That command even has functionality built in so that if you have a URL on the clipboard, the dialog is automatically filled out with said URL.  But that won't work now, because that URL will not be using the webmedia scheme.  webmedia is not a standard scheme, it is private.  Other programs that put a URL on the clipboard, like say a browser, will put the http:// scheme on there, not webmedia://.  And http:// is now broken.  And when you tell someone you can use a URL, the common understanding is a standardized URL, not just a private URL scheme.

Based on the quote I gave from previous release notes, that function is supposed to be smart enough, as you say, to recognize and use URL format that it finds.  It no longer has that intelligence.  But it used to work.

A change that invalidates all standard URLs in favor of only private schemes should not be something that just "happens".  Something like that must be announced, if it happens at all.  The fact it was not makes me wonder if this was intentional.

So maybe MCRatings needs to be fixed, but I would say so does MC.

Ah, I didn't look at all that.

File < Open URL, with Web Media Options, doesn't add the URL to the Web Media Streaming Group either, which I think it was supposed to.

It would be best if the URL format remained standard, and MC did what it needed to do internally.

This sounds like a bug in MC, or perhaps it's intentional to prevent users from entering any non-video URL which might lead to problems.
Anyway, MCRatings has an option "use webmedia for Trailer URLs" to converts http to webmedia URLs. Just enable it and do GET Movie Info again.

Just to close the loop in this, Hendrik weighed in and basically said the new behavior is what's expected.  Here's how he explained:

It works with standard URLs that actually point to a video or audio stream, and not a plain website. Thats how it was always meant to work. There is too many headaches trying to handle arbitrary URLs and guessing if there is video somewhere in their website.

Your YouTube URL points to a website, not a video.
YouTube handling was changed quite a bit in recent versions, so not everything from history applies anymore, but instead you can actually play YouTube videos far more reliably and in higher quality now.

So if you're trying to paste a value from the clipboard from some other app, be mindful you might have to manually rewrite it to use webmedia://  if you're using File->Open URL

And of course only the webmedia:// links work for trailers, but Zybex has that covered with his option to rewrite those in MCRatings.

I'm using v. 25, and while trailers worked awhile ago, they have not worked for me for over a month.  I tested on a current movie, and made sure to do a "get movie and TV info".

Are there any steps to troubleshoot?

They only work with the latest MC26.
