When I try to rip a CD using the LAME MP3 encoder, I get a pop-up message that says "Unknown error from the encoder", and when ripping completes, the MP3 file isn't created. The log file is attached.

I tried to rip uncompressed to wav file and convert to MP3. Conversion completes without an error, but the MP3 file isn't created.

Check your options for file location.  Maybe you don't have permission to write the file or the temp file that is created.

Which of these file locations does it create the temp file?

Program Files: Temporary Files

Temp files, I believe.  Just try creating a file in that location.

I was able to create a file in that folder.

I tested the other encoders and all were successful except for MP3, Musepack and Ogg.

Jim means the "Taming Windows Defender on Windows 10 for JRiver Media Center" thread. Windows Defender may be stopping something from working.

The MP3 encoder is working for me, with the settings shown in the image. Try changing settings.

MC will use both the Cache and Temporary directors when converting, if the Cache isn't disabled. Or more correctly, it uses the temporary directory for the conversion, and then puts a copy in the Conversion Cache if that Cache setting is not "None".

I tried adding exclusions for the folders, processes and file types, but encoding still failed. I was able to get encoding to run only by completely disabling Windows Defender.

You need to exclude the JRiver executables. Did you do that as well?

That thread is a long read, and is overkill, but it is worth reading through and finding the summary of what works best.

After much trial and error, I was able to resolve the issue by going into "Manage Controlled Folder Access", "Allow an app through Controlled folder access" and adding lame.exe from the %APPDATA% plugins folder. I discovered this by temporarily turning off "Controlled folder access" and was able to rip with MP3 encoding. I had already tried adding "Media Center 26.exe" and "JRWorker.exe" to the allowed apps list but that didn't work.

It's Windows Defender causing the problem.  Seems like we're seeing a lot more Windows Defender caused problems.

Thanks for your help. It had been working before, so a Defender update must have added some restrictions. Interesting that the encoding failure didn't show up in Defender notifications or in the event viewer.

The issue seems to be with a separate executable, not with a simple data file.

Can you try the following - set a folder exclusive and a separate process exclusion for the J River folder, nothing else. According to Microsoft documentation, that should provide exclusions for any files that any programs in that folder open, but it has been hard to test it fully.  And, it may only apply to data files, not to executables in other folders.  Thanks.

That was the first thing I tried but the encoding still failed.
