CD not loading [Solved]
« on: June 13, 2020, 06:07:47 am »

Hi. I have recently upgraded to MC26 on Windows - build 26.0.90 (64 bit). I cannot load a CD from my blu-ray drive (it worked on MC18). I have tried with 2 CDs - one just constantly retries, the other offers me different track listings, but when I accept, it loops around to offer them again. I am running Windows 10, connected to a remote MC library server, but the same thing happens when I use a local library. This happens every time. Please help! Log attached.

Could be a Windows Defender problem.  Please read the thread here.

Could also be a Windows problem.  See the "Weird Problems" link in my signature and read the last few posts on the last page.

Thanks Jim. I don't think it is a Defender problem. It works fine under MC18, and defender has not reported blocking anything. I have also looked through you weird problems, but I can't see anything that really matches. I think I need JRiver to examine the log, and determine the cause. regards, Duncan

We don't look at logs unless the problem is common.

Don't assume that, because one version works with Windows Defender, another will.  Please configure Windows Defender.

This CD problem is a Windows issue (from the Weird Problems thread):

Major versions of MC are considered by Windows as separate programs.

So exceptions you set up for v18 in Defender do not apply to v26. So you need to configure Defender for v26 separately (just apply same settings as v18 as it seems to work)

Jim, tij, Thanks for your comments. However, I am no further forward. The link you sent me Jim refers to a CD ripping problem, and the resolution seems to be to revert to Windows 7, and then re-install Windows 10. I have not used Windows 7 in many years, and certainly have no disks to do that. I have looked closely at Defender - I have Mediacenter26 configured to allow access, the same as I did for Mediacenter18. However, to be certain, I turned Defender off, and retried - same result. So I do not think that this is a Defender problem. Any other ideas?

Duncan - Slightly Obvious Question - Have you tried putting a DVD or Blue-Ray Disc into that drive whilst MC is running to observe what the OS and MC's actions/reactions are?

You can't turn off Windows Defender on Win10.   You must configure it.  The instructions are in the Windows Defender thread.

Jim, the link you sent has no mention of Windows Defender.
It is possible to disable Defender Real-Time protection, the option is there on Win10.

This can also be caused by interference from some other installed application. Many ripping tools add lower/upper filter drivers to the CD/DVD drives that frequently interfere with direct access. I would suggest you uninstall other apps that may use the drive. You can check which filters are installed with these cmd commands:

  devcon classfilter cdrom upper
  devcon classfilter cdrom lower

On most systems nothing is returned.

PS: This might show more detail:
  devcon stack *cdrom*

The user did install Windows 7 first, but I believe the solution was the installation of Win10 that didn't include the most recent update.

Try asking these questions on Google.  You should find similar problems and perhaps some solutions.  In any case, I don't think the problems you're having are because of JRiver.

Hi. Further information. I have uninstalled Nero 8 just in case it was interfering with the drive - no change. I have uninstalled MC26, rebooted, and reinstalled - no change. Looking closely at the log, the problem does not seem to be with the drive itself. The disc is being read, and the track lookup process occurring - it is just that this process loops around - see this extract from the log after it finishes reading all the tracks on the disk - it starts again at track 1!:

Please open a Command Prompt window, execute those Devcon commands, and paste the output here.

Also, I see Daemon Tools is installed. This is one of those that adds low-level intercept drivers, perhaps you can try uninstalling that too. Make sure to uninstall the driver portion, I think it's a separate component in Daemon Tools.

Duncan - Try the following:-

In MC switch off the Auto-Lookup - "Options > General > Online Metadata > Allow automatic CD lookup / submission"
Then insert one of the CD's that is giving you problems and keep an eye on what MC and your Optical Drive is doing/reporting in the Tree
The entry for you optical drive should change from Compact Disc to Unknown Album (if there is no "CDText" on the disc) or the Album Name (If there is CDText on the Disc)
Then Click on the "Update from Online Database Option" and once again keep an eye on what MC and your Optical Drive is doing.

After much time trying to install the Windows SDK in order to get access to devcon, I have finally go there:

E:\>devcon classfilter cdrom upper
Class filters unchanged.

E:\> devcon classfilter cdrom lower
Class filters unchanged.

E:\>devcon stack *cdrom*
SCSI\CDROM&VEN_MSFT&PROD_VIRTUAL_DVD-ROM\2&1F4ADFFE&0&000001
    Name: Microsoft Virtual DVD-ROM
    Setup Class: {4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} CDROM
    Controlling service:
        cdrom
SCSI\CDROM&VEN_ATAPI&PROD_BD__O__DH4O3S\4&FE99083&0&040000
    Name: ATAPI BD  O  DH4O3S
    Setup Class: {4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} CDROM
    Controlling service:
        cdrom
2 matching device(s) found.

I have also uninstalled Daemon Tools Lite and rebooted. I could not find a separate driver portion. Still no luck.

Thanks - Duncan

Hi. I also tried the suggestion from EnglishTiger. All I get is a repeating window saying "Anlayzing optical disc..." with a cancel button (which cannot be selected before the window disappears and reappears). The tree stays as "Compact Disc (X:)" and never changes. So I don't get a pane showing the cd and tracks, and no button to update from the online database. ... tricky problem... Thanks.

Duncan I sincerely hope I'm wrong but I think you may need to get hold of a PC Tech to check out your Optical Drive and it's cables.

The Daemon Tools driver is called SPTD. If you can't find it listed on the control panel Apps, you can download it from here, run it, and select Uninstall.

The devcon output shows a virtual DVD device is still present. It may belong to DaemonTools, or perhaps it's just an ISO mounted in Windows Explorer - you can just open Explorer, find that virtual drive letter, right click on it and select EJECT. Then devcon should only show your real BD drive.

You can also try changing the drive letter of your BD drive. In the old days, letter X: was reserved and used as a placeholder in some Windows APIs. It should be fine to use X: nowadays, but... something to try.

Other than this, no more ideas :/ I don't think it's an hardware issue since it works with MC18 and other apps, but it will be hard to track down the cause.

Hi. SPTD does not appear in the control panel Apps. The download link does not work, stating that Windows 10 is not supported. The virtual device is the ISO I used for the Enterprise WDK - that was the only successful way I managed to get a copy of devcon. I also changed the drive letter to W:, with no effect.

I have re-installed MC18, and I confirm that this works normally, and I can successfully load and rip CDs. I guess that that works as a work-around for now.

Please keep any suggestions coming.

Thanks Duncan. It does appear to be an MC issue then. Only MC developers can help you on that.
If you do have the chance/time/resources, one thing you can try is a clean Win10 install on that machine, just Win10 + MC26.

Is it possible that AutoPlay is on in MC26 but off in MC18 and the problematic disc just happens to be one that uses "Copy Protection" and it's the discs onboard "DRM Executable" that's not allowing MC26 to complete the Disc Analysis stage

Issue solved - I am posting this if it helps anyone else with this device. It seems that it was a problem with my cd reader - model DH-403S. I recently upgraded to a Pioneer model (BDR-212EBK), and it all works as it should. Strange that it worked with MC18 though. Thanks for all the advice from everyone. Duncan

Maybe it used a 32 bit driver.  That might require the 32 bit version of MC.
