« on: April 21, 2003, 02:39:58 pm »

Media Center 9.0.156 is available.

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter90156.exe

1. Fixed: Several usability enhancements to the MC search control. (range selection and deleting didn't always work as expected)
2. NEW: Send To display text much more helpful. (displays # files for playlists, burning, etc.)
3. Changed: JRiver video codec improved. (speed and quality)
4. NEW: Added "Auto save sort changes" that makes sticky-view sort remembering optional.
5. NEW: Added "Sort track # for albums" option back.
6. NEW: Added "Save Current View" to column-header right click.
7. Changed: Column & view menu is now a part of "List Style" menu / toolbar button.
8. Fixed: "Go to end" key works on TiVo.
9. NEW: Graphical, one-click rating! (requires PixOS this build -- all skins will work next build)

And you guys said there wouldn't be any more new features!!  You just can't help your selves can you?? ;D

Sweet with the changes to sorts.  I think it will be the best of both worlds for most people...

Nice One.  I can almost feel RTM around the corner...

The new graphical rating thing is pretty sweet. Only one tiny problem with it.

Auto Size Columns always sizes the Rating column so that it only displays 3 stars.

Is the rating graphic skin customizable?

Doof,

The graphic can be customised.  It is in the Pix OS skin folder and is called List_Rating.gif

if you swipe the mouse over the ratings to the right

a rated file now seems unrated.

Also when you wipe the mouse over to the left it does make the List lines vanish in the ratings box

Q: how do you "Un-Rate" a file?

I really would like to see auto rip mode work. As it is, it is totally busted if I try to rip more then 1 or 2 CDs.... In the thread I started http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=beta;action=display;num=1050783379
Others seem to have the same problems, so it is not just me. Please, please take a look.

Thanks

To remove file rating, click on the area on the right of the snow flakes. That's why when you move mouse to the area snow flakes change to unrated state.

Showstoppper:

Go to web media, and select BBC News 24 (A "featured" site) -- Media Center crashes. This happens with some of the other stations as well.

Graphical ratings are great.
So much nicer to have all the big list of text broken up abit with some graphics.

  • Confirm the bug with it only being 3 snow flakes wide. It should be a tiny bit bigger than 5 so there's space to click to get rid of the rating.

  • its a little bit hard to see the rating when it's highlighed - you click on it to make it apply the rating you've moved to and then it highlights it blue with blue flakes - almost impossible to see.

  • Send to cd burner extra text isn't working (saying no files qued when there are several.

    6. NEW: Added "Save Current View" to column-header right click.

Got really excited by this one - thought you were going to let us save the views with a name so we could build a collection of different views that we could easily apply to any screen we were in. Could then have views like: Sorted by filename for tagging, sorted by rating, sorted by track number etc and then just apply these to ANY view - would have been really powerful :)

Gotta say though, on the whole, MC is pretty much fully there for me.
Only one thing about it that still agitates me and its what Rhino pointed out a little while back - Burn playlists being cleared after we burn.

There REALLY should be an option to let it stay after the cd is burnt and even better would be an option to automatically save every burn playlist into a playlist group using the time and date as the playlist name so that all cd's burnt were nicely archived if we wanted to again burn the same cd.
If this was added - MC really would be the dogs b*llocks!

Everything was running fine till I updated to this build.  Now I can't even open MC without it crashing with a Media Core error, so I can't even give you my system specs.  As I said before, everything was fine until this build.

UPDATE:  Used the MC .exe from 155 and it works fine now.  So for me, the problem is with the 156 .exe.  Here are my specs using the one that works:

Quicktime playback is still problematic.

Stopping playback during a quicktime .mov file causes MC to just disappear.

Same with a transition from quicktime to wmp.

I love the new sorting method. I had it just how I want it in 30 seconds flat! Thanks!

The visual ratings are nothing to sneeze at either.

You're definitely getting closer to a shipable product!

If I click on a View Scheme Group that has nothing inside of it, (for instance, if I remove all of the images from my database, then click on the Images View Scheme Group), MC Core crashes.

I can even create a brand new library with nothing in it, Cancel out of the Import Media box, click on a View Scheme Group (any of them - even just plain Media Library), and MC will crash.

Ahh...iTunes-like.  Very cool.

The "snowflake" is a bit ugly though.  It would be nice to see the final "rated" setting in a color that displays better through the highlighted song.  That blue on blue is difficult to see.

Hi there,

I have a few albums in uncompressed wave format (1411kbps) and since build 155 (dont know about 153 or 154) MC has been playing them back at 2822kbps, which is screwing up the output. I uninstalled and installed 152 and it works fine, but 155 and 156 both play back at 2822kbps.

Anybody know what's going on?

Cheers, Scott.

: If you expand the Media Library tree and pick Images while you have the View Filter set to Show Only Audio Files, she crashes hard. This also occurs if the view filter is left at Show All Files, you select Video, and you have none.

Request: Could the current setting of the View Filter be made sticky or optional so that it remembers the setting between sessions?

The new WAV plugin does all its decoding at 32-bit.  Simply set the output bitdepth to 16-bit in DSP studio if you want that.

We may make a special case for 16-bit PCM, so this won't happen. (we need to do the 32-bit thing for other more obscure WAV formats)

Matt,

I'm having the same wav prob that Scott is. Setting the output bitdepth to 16-bit in DSP studio still results in playback at 2822 kbs and of course...an underwater sounding DSP effect (actually, changing bitdepth setting has no effect). At first I thought the ape to wav conversion was faulty...no...it is simply MC's playback of wav's.

Quick Find cover art in dir isn't working for me.

I'm not sure what logic it uses but it doesn't match my naming format for cover art which is a HUGE pain because otherwise it would be SUCH an ideal tool to save me a bunch of effort.

I dont have any particularly consistent naming format for my cover art except that ALL of them contain the word 'Front' in the filename.
They can also vary between being jpg's and being bmp's or gif's.

Could the rule please be extended to check for art containing the word front.

Also - I really think it should be user configureable like AV2 so that each user doesn't need to request that their naming convention be built into the actual  program itself.

I really wish you guys hadn't implemented this graphical ratings stuff. Now that it's so easy to rate songs, I no longer have an excuse not to do it.

And with all of those empty snowflakes staring me in the face, I feel compelled to rate them now.

When I go to Web Media and try to open a station that has real audio format, I get a message telling me to download the latest version of Real Player. I have the latest version and it works properly. I cannot even exit the message. I have to stop Media Center. Is this a known problem? The same happens if I try to open an rm file from my computer.

On my system, enabling skins causes MC to become extremely sluggish. Vertical and horizontal scrolling is almost impossible.

Reproducible Crash in MC 9.0.156:

I've found a reproducible way to crash MC 9.0.156 (on my system, at least).  This crash is new to build 156, since I have successfully carried out these steps with 155.

If someone else was willing to try to reproduce this, I'd appreciate it.  Here are the steps (in gory detail).  I mention "APE" and "MP3" files here, but you can probably substitute any other audio file types, depending on what you have in your MC9 library...

1) Right click the "Audio" tree view entry, and select "Add New View Scheme...".

2) Uncheck Auto-name, supply a name of "Other Audio File Types".

3) Click Add, and add component type "File Type".

4) For search criteria, go to Add Rule > File Info > Media Type... and check Audio (leave "Include" selected down below).  I have since realized that this step is redundant, since we're already under the "Audio" view, but it's of no matter.

6) For additional search criteria, go to Add Rule > File Info > File Type... and check "ape" and "mp3" (or any file type(s) you happen to have listed--I think you have to select ALL of the file types you have listed for this crash to be reproducible, as mentioned toward the end of this post).  Leave "Only show items that match other search criteria" selected, but select "Exclude" for "Do what with the selections" (this last point is important!).

This should leave you with a "View Scheme Properties" dialog that looks like this:

At this point, if you click OK, MC9 may crash.  It does on my system, every time--and I've tried several times now.

If I add a "fake" Ogg Vorbis (OGG) file, then import that file into my MC9 library, and repeat the steps shown above, MC9 does not crash.  So, the crash seems to have to do with MC9 not finding any file type that isn't excluded by the search criteria.

Another way to make MC9 crash, even after creating a "fake" file, and having this view scheme in place, is to subsequently remove the "fake" file from the library, and then go to the "Other Audio File Types" view.  MC9 scrambles to create the view, and finding nothing, eats dirt.

Again, this exact same view worked fine for me with build 155.

I have also found that if I select "Include" for "Do what with the selections" in step (6), it works fine (i.e. it does not crash).  But that doesn't help me in this case!

I'm running XP. This has been happening off and on all throughout 9's beta process.

Basically it seems as though whenever MC's quicktime player quits, MC vanishes. Whether this be because I clicked Stop, or MC transitioned naturally to a non quicktime file, or if I hit next or prev onto a non quicktime file.

As long as I go from one quicktime file to another, it's fine.

If I were at home, I'd post my system specs. I'm apparently not having this problem on my work laptop, although it did vanish the same way just when I started playing a quicktime file. After I restarted MC and tried again, it played fine. But this is a very reproducable problem at home.

On my system, enabling skins causes MC to become extremely sluggish. Vertical and horizontal scrolling is almost impossible.

I'd noticed the slow scrolling but I didn't know it was caused by using a skin.  Just removed the skin and then scrolling was much faster.  Thanks!

BTW, scrolling was not "almost impossible" on my computer but if I tried to scroll an entire page down, the contents of the playlist was blitted/copied step by step upwards but no new information was filled in until all the old information was gone, leaving only a few pixels from lines that were not completely cleared when the old information moved up.  Then the new lines in the playlist were finally filled in.  This behaviour is very annoying, but now that I disabled skins, new information is filled in incrementally when I scroll just like I would expect it to do.  (It's a bit hard to explain this but I hope you'll understand what I mean.)

Do you have gridlines enabled? I did and scrolling was slow. I disabled them and scrolling was nice and fast again.

Problem with wheelmouse:

Scrolling suddenly stops

Reproduce
(all scrolling with the mousewheel)
If you open the Artist/Album tree you can scroll up and down as expected.Click on an Artist with so many songs that you have to scroll in the right track window to see them all.Click on a song and scroll up and down. Jump back to the left tree and click on any other artist.  (not the one you started with) Now you can scroll only about 6 lines and it stops. Click on another artist and there are another 6 lines. You can set it back to normal a: Jump back to the artist you started from and click on  b: close and reopen Artist/Album

No problems in any other software

Since 9.0.145 I think, but not for sure

BUG:

MC9 hangs when I try to change the audio properties when playing a DVD.

To reproduce the problem I start playing a DVD then I right click in the playback window then select Audio Options > Decoder Properties. None of the buttons on the form work and I can't get rid of it. I have to kill MC9 to get back up and running.

Also the dialog says that audio output option is only available when the player is in stop mode but when I press stop on the player there is no longer an Audio Options menu item on the right click menu.

THANK YOU for this post.  I have always used grid lines with MJ and MC, and consequently always put up with slow, jerky scrolling.  However, due to some strange sort of mental block that probably only a handful of psychiatrists could explain, I never thought to try disabling grid lines to improve scrolling performance.

After reading your post, I disabled them, and the difference is dramatic.  It's an unfortunate trade-off, since I really like the grid lines (to me, it's a big visual aid), but the slow scrolling they impose is really aggravating.
