Noise over usb output from Id to dac
« on: July 08, 2020, 02:30:19 pm »

I have an Id and have been using the toslink spdif output to the dac in my home theater preamp/processor. It works fine. I tried connecting from the Id to a Chord Mojo with the same toslink cable and that worked fine too. I then tried a usb output from the Id to the Mojo and it was very noisy. I tried several different usb ports on the Id. Same result. I tried several different Audio Device choices in Tools/Options and there was no change either. The same cable works fine from my laptop or another pc that is my server to the Mojo without the noise.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

The files are flacs mostly from ripped CD's stored on my JRiver server elsewhere on the same network. Everything is playing at its native sampling rate.

Thanks for responding so quickly!

The Id is a player only and recently purchased. My pre/amp is an older Marantz so the the dac is ok but not great.

I don't know why you're seeing this.  Did you try Mojo?

Are the FLAC files 16/44.1 stereo?

Is the Id a NUC or a Raspberry Pi?   If it's a Pi, the problem could be power related.

The Id is an Intel with linux. It is Media Center 26.

The Flac's are 16/44.1 stereo.

The Mojo works fine with the same usb cable connected to a Windows laptop running JRiver served by the same JRiver server as the Id.

The Mojo works fine with the toslink cable connected to the Id.

The pre/amp works fine with the toslink cable connected to the Id.

Are the usb connections on the back of Id different in some way? I didn't try those. I only tried the two in the front.

Could this be some sort of ground loop? The Mojo is running on an internal battery so that seems unlikely. The Id and the pre/amp are on the same circuit tho.

On the Id, what is your Audio device set to?  Did you try others?

I am afraid I don't recall exactly as I was doing this yesterday. I remember that I tried several and they all had the info "Chord Mojo" in the title. So the Mojo was talking to the Id. They all sounded the same. I stopped as I was concerned as the noise level was high. Not as high as the music level but high enough I didn't want to push it.  I thought I would try your help and see if this was a common issue. I am in another location now. I can try and recreate the situation when I have a chance and get back to you.
