MC9 - Plug-ins won't install
« on: April 21, 2003, 08:44:26 am »

I am running MC 9.0.155, however the same problem occurred with the previous build.  I have already tried the uninstall/reinstall routine in an attempt to correct this.

When I download and try install any interface plug-in, it doesn't appear anywhere (including the Plug-in Manager).  Basically, MC9 refuses to install plug-ins for me.

The two plug-ins in particular that I have tried are the "Sleep Timer" and the "Chart And Lyrics Finder":

http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/downloads/mcplugins.pl?type=10

Here's what else I have tried: I opened the MJP files (linked to in the "Download for MC v.9" URL on the plug-in download page) in a text editor.  Inside the MJP files was a link to a ZIP archive.  I pasted the ZIP URLs in my browser, to download them directly.  Inside the ZIP for the "Sleep Timer" plugin was a DLL; the ZIP for the "Chart And Lyrics Finder" plugin had a setup EXE file.

For the "Sleep Timer" plugin, when trying to import the DLL file manually using the Plug-in Manager, MC9 reported an "Unsupported plugin type".  Strange.

For the "Chart And Lyrics Finder", I manualy ran the setup file.  And unlike when downloading the MJP file itself, when I manually invoked the setup file, it worked.  When I closed and relaunched MC9, the "Chart And Lyrics Finder" appeared under the previously-absent Plug-ins tree item.

So, I'm at a loss here.  Why are some plug-ins throwing errors, while others don't even have their installers initiated?

Any advice?  Is it just me?  Why won't plug-ins install automatically, or, in some cases, at all?

An interesting twist on the "Chart And Lyrics Finder" plug-in: Seconds after posting the message above, the plug-in somehow captured the text of the post and used it for the lyrics for some of the songs I had in "Playing Now"!  You understood correctly: Some of my songs have lyrics that say "I Am Running Mc 9.0.155..."   :-/

It must be your system

Yes, something about "my system" brings out a bug in MC9.  Particularly since MJ8 worked fine in this regard.

not sure it would be a bug in MC since what you said in your e-mail and that has nothing to do with MC9

it does have somthing to do with windows, And the browser.

MC9 has nothing to do with your system wanting to place the files in the wrong place. MC9 has nothing to do with the install of plug-ins it is a system problem.

now MC9 does use another place to look for plug-ins in the registry than MJ8 (it is more secure). but that is still a windows problem.

MC9 has plenty to do with the installation of plug-ins; it is the handler that downloads the ZIP files and opens them, is it not?

MC9 is associated with plug-in (i.e. MJP) files.  When you click an MJP link in the browser, MC9 catches it, and asks if you want to install the plug-in.  When I give it a "Yes", MC9 opens the MJP file, and successfully parses it.  Then, MC9 successfully downloads the plug-in ZIP file (which is obvious in the case of your Chart finder plugin, since it is rather large, and you have plenty of time to see what MC9 is doing.

So, on my system, MC9 downloads the plug-in ZIP file, and then chokes.  MC9 is not handling the ZIP file, or its contents, correctly.  I cannot imagine what could be wrong with Windows for things to go awry.

What I don't understand is what is *supposed* to happen after MC9 finishes downloading the ZIP file.  Since dunzip32.dll exists under the MC9 directory, I assume that MC9 is what opens the ZIP files.  I think this is where it is failing.

I am not being argumentative; I just want to know what is going on!

No windows and IE are.

you do not need to have MC9 running when plug-ins are installed.

when you click on a link IE takes the install info from the website and installs it.

MC9 is not involved (as far as i know and have an understanding of it)

I am clueless

thats IE's part

I have never seen a problem like yours before or heard of it, and that makes me think it is more a system problem han a MC9 problem.

I hear you, Just Don't know the answer directly

I am not sure if J river could shed some light on this for you but maybe if you provide some more detailed info about plugins you can load and what is happening (not mine since mine is perfict)

You don't need to have MC9 running when plug-ins are installed because of the MJP file association, which is of the "MediaJukebox.Pack" type, and in turn calls the "PackageInstaller.exe" application under the MC9 directory.  The browser is just the manner in which the MJP file is accessed.

On my system, the exact path called when an MJP file is opened is:

"C:\Program Files\Media Center\PackageInstaller.exe" /Install "%L"

This appears in the registry under the key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MediaJukebox.Pack\shell\open\command

PackageInstaller is correctly launched, and correctly downloads, but then fails...

I am going to delve into this, and I will enlighten the world when I figure it out.   :o

BTW that is the same as on my system

and i see what your getting at but, still i have never heard of this on other systems.

Well, it works now, but I am still confused.  All I did was (1) Move my Temporary Internet Files (TIF) location (Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab > Settings > Move Folder), log off and back on, and then (2) Move it back, and log off and back on again.

I've installed and removed the "Sleep Timer" plugin several times now, even taking care to manually remove the leftover DLL file from the MC9\Plugins directory after removing it via the Plug-in Manager.  It installs correctly every time now.

The Chart finder plug-in also launches correctly (I assume that if setup launches, it will run fine from there, since it wasn't even launching at all before).

Ummm...  I have no idea!

I don't know what the problem was!  It annoys me not knowing, too.  You're probably right; Windows was probably blowing chunks in some way.

Thanks for the attempts at help.

Are you using IE as your browser?  There is a FAQ on plug-in installation problems.
