Unable to Load Silicondust EPG [Solved]
« on: September 22, 2020, 03:51:26 pm »

[Solved by turning on Media Network in MC]

I have a SiliconDust DVR subscription, but am not able to load SiliconDust EPG info.  Right after channel scanning, I get the message "Execution of external program failed."
I am using MC 27.0.15, and the latest software and firmware for my HDHR.  My units are listed as compatible with the DVR subscription.  HDHomeRun Setup verifies that my account is active.

I have tried on two computers, and get the same result.

Antivirus is Norton, which is set as recommended for HDHomeRun and MC.  I tried disabling Norton, but with the same result.

Any ideas?

Same problem here except I'm not running Norton... just Windows Defender with MC exceptions.

Thanks for the log.  The issue I am seeing from the log file is that MC did not obtain a valid Device Authorization code.  I see you have HDHomeRun tuners.  Are those HDHomeRun Dual?  What is the model name of the devices?  If you wait a while after you start MC (like a couple of minutes) do you see any HDHomeRun device showing up as DLNA servers under Playing Now (possibly with "DMS" in the name)?

I have two HDHR4-2US, and one HDHR5-2US tuners.  I also have HDHR3 and HDHR1 tuners, but deselected these during scanning, and even tried unplugging them, in case they are causing confusion.  There is no difference in result.

The HDHR4-2US and HDHR5-2US show up as "Media Devices" on the network in Windows Explorer, as "HDHomeRun DMS [followed by numbers]".  They are not showing up under "Playing Now" in MC27.0.15.

Did you turn on Media Network setting to enable DLNA?  See the screenshot I posted here:

I had the same problem and it worked when I purchased the subscription to the EPG and set up MC to use it.  I just added these instructions:

JRiver 27.0.16
HdHomeRun Model: HDHR-US
Firmware: 20200225

I am getting "Execution of external program failed".

I turned on Media Network and enabled firewall passthrough.
I'm a new DVR subscriber (no hardware) and when I click the links from Silicondust, it registers my hardware.
Channel scan works fine, TV channels play.
My HDHR is configured to use JRiver in its settings.

Attached a log.

Your Silicondust device may be too old to be compatible with the DVR service.

From https://www.silicondust.com/dvr-service/

Supported HDHomeRun hardware
HDHomeRun PRIME HDHR3-CC
HDHomeRun CONNECT HDHR4-2US/2DT/2IS
HDHomeRun CONNECT DUO HDHR5-2US/2DT
HDHomeRun CONNECT QUATRO HDHR5-4US/4DT
HDHomeRun EXTEND HDTC-2US
HDHomeRun EXTEND HDTC-2US-M
HDHomeRun EXPAND HDHR3-4DC
HDHomeRun EXPAND HDHR5-4DC

Edit:
I have been using HD HomeRun devices for about 10 years, and have the HDHR, HDHR3-US, HDHR4-2US, and HDHR5-2US models.  Of these, the HDHR and HDHR3-US do not show up as DMS devices; this ability is not present in these earlier models.

Gahh... thanks for pointing that out.
Silicondust has such a great track record of supporting the legacy devices, that it never even occured to me to "look before I buy" to verify compatibilty.
If their 4K device was available today then I'd buy that.
Instead, I think I might ask if I can get a refund on the DVR service and just wait till next year when the 4K rolls out in mass.

Maybe we can locate a newer tuner.  I just looked at my place but couldn't find my old one.

Cancel that.  SD says your device will work with their EPG.  It just won't work for their DVR, but you don't need that.

Hi CZ Eddie,

HDHR5-4K isn't far off being available and your HDHR-US should work fine with JRiver and Silicondust guide in the mean time.

You need a HDHomeRun DVR subscription to get Silicondust guide for JRiver - it sounds like you have done that already.

You won't be able to use the HDHomeRun DVR record engine with the old HDHR-US but that doesn't matter as you are using JRiver for recording.

Please post or message me the DeviceID of your HDHomeRun - I will check the guide is working server side for your device.

Everything is right - the Silicondust server is returning 14-days of guide for your device.

I am very curious as to whether or not CZ Eddie has had success.

My original HDHR only works with the SiliconDust EPG if my HDHR4-2US and/or HDHR5-2US are present on the same network, as well as DLNA enabled.

The more modern units do not have to be included in the channel scan itself (the HDHR displays the channels just fine as the solo tuner), but they do need to be plugged in and connected for the scan/EPG load to be successful.

If they are not turned on and on the same network, the "Execution of external program failed" error occurs after the channel scan.

Thanks.  I tried it on my second PC that is running 27.0.15 and it has the same issue.

I enabled DLNA in MC.
Added Media Center to firewall.
But when setting up the guide, it gives that same old error.
I then tried adding more permissions to the firewall settings but no change in problem, even after restarting the app.

Sorry, I missed this post earlier.
I don't see anything obvious that looks like a DMS?

And thanks to the JRiver wiki I was able to at least figure out what you were talking about:
https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DLNA

Terminology
DLNA Terminology

1. DMS -- Digital Media Server -- where the media resides
2. DMP -- Digital Media Player -- where the media is played
3. DMR -- Digital Media Renderer -- where media is played, but with ability to respond to a controller
4. DMC -- Digital Media Controller -- software control of the renderer -- functions as a remote

Normally a home network is set as a Private Network in Windows. It should be.

You needed to allow MC to communicate on Private Networks in Defender. Your first image in Replay #21 shows that box unticked.

Also, you didn't need to have the Public Networks box ticked.

EDIT: Ah, I see in your last image that you did change that. MC is probably using the JRWeb.exe and JRWorker.exe as well. Have you Tamed Windows Defender?

Expand the server portion of Playing Now, i.e. click the little triangle to the left of "Playing from Main Library".  Do you see an HDHomeRun device listed there?

You needed to allow MC to communicate on Private Networks in Defender.

I posted that first image because that was the default, untouched settings when I added Media Center to the firewall.
I changed it in the second.
I don't know why "Public" would have been the default, but since that's how HDHomeRun configured itself, I went ahead and duplicated it for MC and added Domain & Private as well.

Also, you didn't need to have the Public Networks box ticked.

Good to hear, I'll remove it going forward!

MC is probably using the JRWeb.exe and JRWorker.exe as well.

Thanks, I went ahead and added those!  They also defaulted to "public" only, so I reversed that to removing public and adding domain/private.
It didn't fix the issue :(

Have you Tamed Windows Defender?

I didn't, but it is configured now.
Though I didn't do individual files, just the folders.
Still getting that same error.

nickk,

Is there a corresponding DMS device associated with CZ Eddie's tuner?  If so, how is it named?  Currently we assume model names all start with "HDHomeRun".  Is this assumption wrong?

Even after waiting half an hour.

But I just remembered, the PC I'm testing on today (not the one from yesterday) is an "N" version of Win10.
Win10 Enterprise N LTSC 1809 11763.1457 to be exact.
I'll try all of today's troubleshooting steps on my non-N version of Win10 tomorrow, just in case that has something to do with it.

I guess you should check that your LAN is set as a Private Network as well. I've seen my LAN set to Public after some Windows Updates for some reason. Run "Network Status" in Windows to check.

Unless you are actually connecting to a Domain server, you shouldn't need to allow MC through the Defender Firewall for Domain Networks either. I should have mentioned that.

Of course, if you are running Win10 Enterprise at home for work purposes, and it is connecting to a Domain Network, you may need to have that on... but then you would probably be using a VPN to the work network, and you wouldn't actually be on your Home Network LAN. If that was the case, MC and the Homerun tuner (which use UPnP/DLNA SSDP for Discovery, which only works on a LAN) would not work on the Win10 Enterprise PC.

Before going further down this rabbit hole, please see https://info.hdhomerun.com/info/dlna_upnp

CZ Eddie’s first generation HDHR does not support DLNA/UPnP.
