working with Creative Nomad IIc
« on: April 09, 2003, 01:44:46 pm »

I have a Creative Nomad IIc, which I use primarily for running.  I'm trying out the MC9, and trying to use it with my Nomad.  I've downloaded the correct plugin, and when the Nomad is connected to the USB port, the application recognizes the device without a problem.  I'm able to transfer mp3 files over to the Nomad, delete files from the Nomad, and transfer files back to  the computer.  All this works great, but...

MC9 (or the plugin) seems to have no understanding of the file sequence on the Nomad.  The file view, by default, lists the files in alphabetical order by file name.  The view can be resorted, of course, but no track number or sequence number is made available to facilitate this.  So you can't display them in the order they will actually play.  And since there is no sequence number, there doesn't seem to be any way to change the ordering of the songs on the Nomad.  This would be less of an issue with a jukebox type player, which works with genres, artists, albums, and playlists.  But on a flash base device like this, the actual file sequence is pretty significant.

So, am I missing something here?  If I want to view or modify the ordering of the songs on the Nomad, does the plugin actually support this?  If so, please just point me in the right direction.  If not, why is this basic functionality missing?

smcvick,

I will need to test this more carefully tomorrow, but for now...

To transfer the files in a set order, get your files "In Queue" and then right click on the Nomad II icon and select "Show queued files only" This will allow you to order the files however you want and then send them to the Nomad. After the upload, right click and select "Show All Files" to restore the view of the Nomad

Yeah, I was able to get the files to the Nomad in the order I want by doing basically what you described.  That's only a partial solution, though.  Once you've downloaded them to the Nomad, if you want to change the order, there's no way to do it without reloading everything.

smcvick,

Are you able to reorder with any Nomad application?  I cannot do it from within Playcenter and I do not have the ability to creat a reorder feature with the information Creative has given me. If you can do this with some other application, that would tell me that I need to get some updates from Creative.

When I connect the Nomad to my PC, and work with it using Playcenter, the files are displayed in the order they are actually sequenced on the device.  And yes, I am able to modify the sequence through playcenter.

I don't recall whether the gui was set up to use drag and drop, or if they provided Move Up, Move Down buttons.  I don't have the Nomad (or Playcenter) here at work, so I can't doublecheck exactly how the interface works.  But after running into this issue with MC9, I went back and tested Playcenter to make sure this was functionality supported by the Nomad.

I'll try to remember to try it again tonight, and I'll let you know which version of Playcenter I'm running, and exactly how their interface works.

smvick,

Try getting the latest NomadII plugin (v9.0.04) which I just posted. This will show you the order, but does not yet have the reorder. I will wait to hear how you see this work.

I grabbed the latest version of the plugin, and it does display a sequence number now, and you can sort the display based on this value.  I did notice that if you right click on the headings, and bring up the menu to edit the view setup, there's no choice for the sequence number, unlike all the other options (file type, name, etc).  But apparently you can display it anyway.

When I switched to Playcenter (version 2.52.18), I was able to change the file sequence, as I mentioned previously.  In the Nomad II section of the app, simply select the file you want to move, and hit Shift Up or Shift Down in the toolbar at the top of the list.  They're in there with Refresh, Delete, etc.  Drag and drop doesn't seem to be an option.

Also, one other thing I noticed.  I connected the Nomad, and was able to view the track sequence using the new plugin in MC9.  After I switched to Playcenter and moved a track, however, Media Center wasn't aware of the fact that the track sequence had changed.  I could look at the Nomad itself, and the track had definitely been moved, but Media Center continued to display the old sequence.  This persisted even after disconnecting the Nomad from the USB port, reconnecting, and hitting Refresh in MC9.  I was only able to get Media Center to reload the sequence by exiting the app and restarting it.

Steve

Just an FYI, I'm leaving town in a couple of hours, and won't be back online until late Sunday at the earliest.  So, if you get back to me with more information or a new plugin in the meantime, and I don't respond, I'm not ignoring you.

Sean,

Thanks. I have a message in to Creative to get whatever updates I need to gain this functionality. With what I have, there is not a way to enable this feature.

smcvick,

A quick update...

I talked to Creative today and they still don't have an answer for me, but they think they did not make that feature available in their SDK which is what we based our Plugin on.
