Restarting Media Server
« Reply #50 on: April 09, 2003, 12:02:01 pm »

Concerning restarting Media Server before Tivo sees changes

Quote

This is normal behavior (for now).

By "for now", does that mean that it isn't expected to be changed for MC9?

For me, this will be important because I will have others using the program and I would rather not have to teach them to bounce the server.

just wondering what would happen if you had two systems running media server within a local wireless network.

will Tivo see both or just one?

It should see both.

We're still making changes in how it's working so this will improve in the next few builds. Right now, the TiVo might not automatically find the servers and you would then have to manually enter an IP address.

Tonight's build should correct one of the problems.

Media Server messages - error or no?
« Reply #55 on: April 09, 2003, 02:23:34 pm »

So, now with version 9.0.145 of MC, everything seems to be coming together nicely. However, in the status screen of Media Server, I see the following:
Quote
04/09/03 15:19:14 - TiVo HTTP: ready for another connection
04/09/03 15:19:14 - unknown header <TiVo_TCD_ID>
04/09/03 15:19:14 - unknown header <TiVo_SW_VER>
04/09/03 15:19:15 - TiVo streaming I:\Music\#JAZZ#\Keith Jarrett\The Melody at Night, With You\Keith Jarrett - The Melody at Night, With You - 01 - I Loves You Porgy.ape

Are the unknown header messages worth worrying about?

It will work without TiVo software installed on the Windows machine, but you may not have received the update from TiVo. Did you order it? It takes a while to get it after you do.

You can force a check somewhere in their menus. Call something, I think. You know. Just dig for it. It's obscure but meaningful.

You can tell if TiVo has been activated by going to some screen and checking the system configuration. I don't remember where and I don't have a TiVo at hand.

I'd suggest downloading the TiVo Desktop/Publisher software from their web page. Their beacon has more features than ours (and will work with tonight's build, if it comes out tonight).

I had to futz around with mine. Removing the USB device (mine was Linksys USB to wired Ethernet) and rebooting the box and then reinserting. Or something like that.

If it can't find the network, maybe it's confused about DHCP.

It's a mystery, isn't it. Enough monkeys....

Since there has been no responses (subsequent poster's questions have been answered), I assume that there is no way to have Tivo display artist AND trackname for each song. Let's try this question, then...is there any plans to implement this in the future?

Hi LtSparky,

Sorry, I missed your first post somehow. I think your tags are messed up, instead of something we have to fix. Make sure your files are tagged well and then TiVo will display the correct info.

Let me know if this is not the case.

like Aimlessly hitting a bunch of keys on the key board not knowing what it will do or look like when you’re done.

I would do a restart of the Tivo but sue will kill me.

maybe later i want to wakeup in the morning.

Tags are fine. In fact, I'm very picky about making sure the tags are entered correctly. Also, I'm speaking of how tracks are displayed in the folder lists on Tivo, not the box that is shown while playing (that works fine). With Tivo Server, the filenames are shown in the folders(which I have as "artist - trackname.mp3). With Media Server running, only the ID3 trackname is shown. I would prefer having the ability to either a) display the filename as Tivo Server does, or b) display the artist AND trackname ID3 info for each song in the folders instead of just the trackname.

As it is now, I have a "Pop 1990's" folder that, when I go into it using Media Server, I'm presented with 200 song titles and nothing else. Being able to see the Artist and trackname at the same time is far easier than having everything in multi-layer folders. As many of the artists in this (and other) folders have only one song associated to them, having them in an Artist\Trackname folder hierarchy is pointless. I don't want 100 artist folders with 1 song each.

You need to experiment with views. This should be no problem at all. Play around with the views (Right-Click on Audio in the Media Library and create a new view and begin playing with it. You'll be amazed at the level of detail you can create with this and how well it actually works on teh tivo side). Also RTFM!

My latest update.

still broken

Tivo teels me it can't find network.

so i took the USB adapter off the tivo and hooked it to my computer #2 to see if it can see the router. it can the router.

It does give me a warning that my network is not secure then it gives me an option to connect anyway.

i am wondering if this maybe a problem, does Tivo require the network to be secure?

Tivo gives me an error message stating that the network can not be found. it shows the network signal not found.

Did you configure the TiVo networking?

I've heard there are some good tutorials on their site, but I don't know where they are.

Try pulling the adaptor out and putting it in the other slot, and then powering off, not just rebooting. I suppose you have tried that.

that might help, but can't find anything worth looking at

I have tried the other USB port but have not rebooted it with the other port.

i am wondering if i need to have wip enabled (currently it is not).

since linksys is a recomended setup Ii would like to see step by step instructions from router setup to net adapter.

if i ever figure this thing out maybe i will create some pictures with instructions, i am not holding my breath.

What's wip?

Did you disconnect your phone line? I would.

When you reboot, power off.

When I ran setup I found that when you set up DHCP, the screen doesn't clearly show what buttons to use to go forward. It looked like I was setting it correctly but I wasn't.

There are some threads on the TiVo forum that might help. Here's one, for example:

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=111116

> why would that have anything to do with it?

I don't know. It shouldn't, but....

> maybe if i throw it up aginst the wall it will tweek it.

I would threaten it first. Tell it what you plan to do and how much it will hurt. Tell it you don't want to do it. Maybe a good cop/bad cop thing would work. Sue could try to restrain you.

i got it to find the network adapter....

one screen brought up an option to select 3 types of networks one at the bottom was linksys, i have been selecting that.

the next one up was a closed network, when i selected that one it worked.

now i have to try to get it to see the published files.

[sorry for posting in the other thread]

To consolidate my list of things MC&Tivo related:

(1) Media Server refreshing. Love to have an easier way to have Media Server reload the library, ideally from within MC itself. A "Refresh Media Server" menu option would be nice.
(2) cross-fade support when streaming to Tivo. I know this is major, so just add it to your future feature list for consideration.
(3) update statistics when streaming from Media Server. IMHO, neat tricks like the Top 100 will be useless since we will be using Media Server to access our music 75% of the time.

Thanks.

Nope that was bogus, the closed network was nothing...

=======================

this problem for me seems to be Tivo's fault

when i turn off my wireless router, and go to tivo where it allows you to select the type of network it gives you 2 choices.

if i go plugin my router, "Linksys" shows up as the 3rd network type.

if i select it, it tells me "linksys", no password, no security.

then it tells me it could not connect to the wireless network.

====================================

i posted a question in the Tivo forum

Could it be a distance problem?

If you're using security, try removing it.

Linksys might also be some help on this.

ok, it's fixed!!!!

it seems the USB net adapter must be in 802.11b mode but the linksys USB adapter will go into G mode if the router is in "G" mode and then Tivo will not talk to a 802.11g mode adapter (yet)

this works for the WRT54G router

Quote
"I am sure some people would like to have a better explanation on how to set up the WRT54G in “B” only mode… So here it is:

On the WRT54G "setup" page, click the "apply settings" button. This will bring up a window with a button that says something like "Click to continue". Don't click it!

Look in the URL Address and locate an item that says "MODE=". After this will be one of the following: -1, 1 or 4. Replace this with the number 0 and hit enter.

If it asks you tock "Click to continue" again, then you may do so.

Now keep in mind, when ever you update any item on the main setup page, you will need to do this again, because the option "0" is not in the html and it will reset you to -1 (Disabled). "

I'd like to second the first request. A real-time media server would be nice. Right now I'm having a hell of a time getting images working the way i want them, so i keep running back and forth between my Tivo and computer changing things, but with every change i need to shutdown the media server and restart it. I know Tivo Desktop was realtime, so maybe it could be done.

You don't have to exit the server. You just need to stop sharing and start sharing again. MS is library based, so it needs to know when to re-load the library.

ok, thats not so bad. Does the server do an auto-reload after x amount of sec/min/hours, or does it need to be done manual each time a change is made? **hint hint** ;-)

In theory, we could make it a little more automatic, but it couldn't do it on a schedule or it might interrupt playback.

Like other things we do, there is always room for improvement, but we have a lot of fish to fry.

Moved topic.

Had problems with .wma - mostly solved.

I reinstalled Windows Media Player 9.

Now, remaining problems are mostly cosmetic:

1) Duration in Tivo shows "continous"
2) While playing, Artist: show both name and something else, reversed.

this second problem could very well be how I have the songs entitled, I'll play more.

Moral of story - reinstall codec helps.

.146 / WMA / No Go.

Current knowledge:

lossless .wma files made with either Windows Media Player or MC play fine in MC, do not play via Tivo.

Settings on Media Server:

Auto Port Selection / Support Tivo on 8080 / Support All Audio

Images -

Media Server is serving up images nice and fast. The images, however, are squished a bit (people look taller, thinner than they really are - my wife really likes Media Server).

My memory of the Tivo application is that images weren't squished.

Using .146

Hi interested,

Could you try again with the latest build coming out momentarily, we made a lot of changes and some of your stuff may be fixed.

Thanks,

I really did not think think sue would embrace this stuff but she has posted a few e-mails and streamed from MC9 and played with her Tivo music server.

She seems to like it, she thinks i am crazy but she likes it.

I try to keep her happy because she cooks my food. ;D

Hi MighTiVo,

1. The "autoresponse thread" is what Media Server uses to automatically identify itself to clients.
It has nothing to do with the TiVo features of Media Server.

2. Media Center allows you to create different libraries. I have a library of ape files for home listening,
a library of mp3 files for listening at work across the network, a library of pictures to share with my friends, etc.

3. Are you relying on autodetection of the TiVo or are you entering an IP address? Whichever you are doing, try the other.

4. How are you connecting to port 81, via a browser? In any case, the error message is outdated and I'll fix it. You are connecting to the Media Center portion of Media Server, not the TiVo portion. (Media Server was designed to share music between two Media Center/Media Jukebox systems, the TiVo is a recent addition).

j

Thanks for the reply

1) What clients? I picked up this program to use for TiVo and it looks great for that anmd managing the files/tags, Sounds like there is some additional functionality for me to play around with.
2)Finally discovered that, thanks.
3)Autodetect didn't ever work, I used IP address and it does.
4)Yes, Browser and the latest build (147) still gives the Music01 error. I have TiVo setting on 8080 but the title bar shows port 81 so I just tried it to see what it did.

[sorry for posting in the other thread]

(2) cross-fade support when streaming to Tivo. I know this is major, so just add it to your future feature list for consideration.
(3) update statistics when streaming from Media Server. IMHO, neat tricks like the Top 100 will be useless since we will be using Media Server to access our music 75% of the time.

These two options would be awesome.

I posted this somewhere else but can not find it so here it goes again....

I would love to see JRiver work with TiVo to get them to support passing thumb ratings back to the streaming server. For Media Center this data could be used to modify the rating. This from the TiVo I could modify ratings and cause the content of playlists to change.

A couple ways I would like to use this:
I could use a rating of 3 thumbs down on audio to indicate a damaged file. This music of rating 1 would no longer be played as I would filter it in my lists and I could have a Task List for those songs to be reencoded.
I could use a rating of 3 thumbs up on photos to indicate photos I want to print thus my wife could sit in front of the TV reviewing vacation photos and easily tag photos she wants me to print.

Since there are three thumbs down, a neutral, and three thumbs up that would leave 7 choices so some decision would need to be made to decide how to map that to the current list of 6 choices ?,1,2,3,4, and 5 or expand the options. Perhaps adding negative numbers so it wouldn't impact non TiVo users:

MC Rating Thumbs Rating
  -5 3 thumbs down
  -3 2 thumbs down
  -1 1 thumb down
   ? Neutral
   1 1 thumb up
   3 2 thumbs up
   5 3 thumbs up

The biggest issue is of course getting TiVo to pass the data back from the set to box.

The new version looks good...music seems more "stable" than before.

On the picture side, I still notice the black bars and squeezed images. I know everyone has been working hard...is this something that can be addressed at some point or is it a limitation of the way MC handles the images?

Thanks,

Also RTFM!

This isn't very helpful, perhaps you could be a little understanding of us new guys here who just started using this program. There is a lot here to learn all at once and some of the features don't seem to work exactly as I would have expected. In many cases for me the on line help is not very complete and states the obvious not the details that would help with a complete understanding of the topic which is why we post here.

In the future it would be greatly appreciated if when you take the time to post a response you also take the time to refrence a point in the manual that would help answer the question.

Media Server wasn't written just for TiVo :), it's been around for quite a while. The "client" is Media Center on a remote computer, connecting to Media Server to access the music on the Media Server machine. We also run a similar thing to the TiVo beacon.

3)Autodetect didn't ever work, I used IP address and it does.

There's a lot that can happen here. Make sure you are running the latest TiVo publisher software, and check the Media Server to see if the messages say it is starting a Beacon. If it is, it's not finding the TiVo beacon for some reason.

I took a quick look, but couldn't find the exact spot where the error message is produced.

The confusion between 8080 and 81 will be cleared up soon. 8080 is for TiVo, and 81 is for Media Server's normal function.

Hope this helps,

j

Thanks for the reply. When I first tried MC I couldn't get it to work until I uninstalled TiVo Publisher and thought the two couldn't coexist on the same system so I have been using MC with TP since day one with MC.

MC broke with TiVo for me with 147, now it doesn't work at all and I get this on the server: (posted in 147 thread)
04/10/03 23:06:41 - cannot connect
04/10/03 23:06:41 - tcp_write failed error=10038
04/10/03 23:06:41 - bad version
04/10/03 23:06:41 - sharer starting
04/10/03 23:06:41 - Initializing server.
04/10/03 23:06:41 - Server initialized
04/10/03 23:06:41 - sharer ready to accept connections
04/10/03 23:06:41 - Started auto response thread on port 5556.
04/10/03 23:06:41 - TiVo HTTP ready for connections

Are you saying I need to keep TP installed?

This is working for me, but I have TP beacon off.

I heard from someone at TiVo that the order in which TP and MS load seems to make a difference.

We're still working out kinks in how this works. It will be resolved next week.
