Hi, I hope someone can help. I've been using MC for a long time now, with zero issues, unitl Media Center 27. On Window 10, with build 27.0.47, the UI becomes completely unresponsive. Not when it's playing something, but if I'm tagging files, or looking up information for files, Windows will post the "program unresponsive" error and I'll have to wait. This is intermittent but regular, so if I'm correcting tags, it might be every third tag I need to wait for a minute or two. Ugh.

Same thing if I launch files associated with Media Center. If they play, they play fine, but every third one or so launched will just freeze the system.

I use Trend Micro as a virus checker (which has identified bits of JRiver in the past as viruses; so maybe you want to reach out them? ) But I've tried it with the AV on and with it Off, and it makes no difference: JRiver UI just hangs.

Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks. FWIW, no other problems with the system, it's running from an SSD, with oodles of RAM

You may need to configure Windows Defender according to the thread here.

We recommend not using another antivirus.

Hi Jim, happy New Year, and thanks for the quick response. I'll spend time with the Windows Defender post tomorrow and let you know.

As for not recommending another antivirus, are you saying that Windows Defender is sufficient? I've used TrendMicro for a long time now, well, since at least the days when Windows didn't have a native AV. 

What puzzles me a lot is that MC 26 did not ever have this issue, with the same (or nearly the same) Windows config (I can't speak for whatever Windows update might do that I don't know about). Since the Defender thread is 2 years old now, I have a hard time believing it's that.

But it's a place to start I guess. A dumb question: if Windows Defender needs to be configured for JRiver UI to work, why don't you folks configure it on install?

I've got eight Win10 machines in my home, been running without 3rd party AV forever. Maybe I am lucky, but not once have I been "infected" by a virus or hacked etc.... For many users (like me), MC works perfectly fine without ever touching Windows Defender.

Ok--it seems fixed now. I'm posting this in case others have the same issues. Here's what worked on my Windows 10 system:

--I set up all the Windows Defender exceptions. Then I set up Trend Micro to leave JRiver alone, too (set as an exception for the same locations as Windows Defender). In my case, this did make the program *initial* startup much quicker, which is nice.

But the AntiVirus stuff did not fix the UI problem: JRiver would still hang for 30s + on sequential and simple tag operations (like updating a title).

--I noticed that when responsiveness returned to JR Media Center, my Windows desktop would "refresh" all the icons. This, to me, was an indicator that Windows Explorer was getting really messed up and restarting. Would have been an BSOD years ago But in any case, it seemed like a UI rendering issue to me.

--After digging through the forums, I found a clue about using Chromium or IE engines as web browsers in JRiver. So I switched from Chromium, to IE, and restarted the program. The problem was still there. However, when I switched back to Chromium (and restarted JRiver), the problem vanished.

So perhaps there was an upgrade issue from MC 26 to 27, probably caused by AV identifying the uninstall exe as a virus, that prevented everything being set up properly in MC27.

Thanks for the advice on AV, by the way. I'll consider it, but with kids around, TrendMicro provides more than just straightforward AV protection, and it seems to work well again

Running two antivirus programs can cause problems.  Windows Defender is enough.  If you want to test, uninstall Trend Micro.
