After all these years, I finally set up a system with Library Server and have a couple of clients accessing it. The client I am using now has MC 27.0.66 and I primarily use it to listen to MP3s that are stored on a NAS with a mapped drive over a gigabit network. Since I recently set it up, I am playing the songs and rating them as they play which then syncs to the library server fine.

However, quite often MC freezes for 10-15 seconds when I go to rate it in the UI. I run the UI maximized and if I click on it in these cases when it freezes, MC expands even more covering the taskbar and the progress indicator just spins. I can move the mouse. It eventually stops and I am able to rate the song. I understand when initially starting, there may be a delay because of the NAS, but it shouldn't go to sleep again within a few minutes. To test my theory, I started playing from my Main library which connects to the same NAS and it has not frozen.

Before I get into asking why I hear skips every so often, is this how library server is supposed to work? Or is there a fix or setting I can change?

It's not normal.  It sounds like MC is temporarily unable to write a file.   

A problem with the NAS?

Antivirus?

You could set up a test library with only local files to see what happens.

I assume you have the same version on all machines.

Hi Jim, thanks for the reply. The NAS is a Synology DS918+. Since it is a new model, I'm not sure what setting could be causing it. Antivirus on the two clients is McAfee and just MS Defender on the library server. Yes, same version of MC on all.

I'll try your test library idea.

You must conigure Windows Defender on any Win10 machines.

Uninstall McAfee to test.

I only made the changes to Windows Defender on the library server computer to start with and kept it still pointing to the NAS files. I have been playing music on the client for 2 days now and I have not experienced the freeze and there hasn't been a skip in any of the play. Amazing that just Windows Defender can cause the issue. If this isn't documented in the wiki, it needs to be to not give anybody else false impressions of MC. Thanks for the help!

The issue is somewhat back. The client isn't freezing with the solution to add exclusions to Windows Defender, and the other issue before with skipping was solved at the same time. The skipping is back, every minute or so. I checked and the exclusions are still there for Windows Defender. Any other suggestions besides Windows Defender that could cause this skipping problem?

Update: MC on the client started pausing again in addition to the skips. The library server still has exclusions in Widows Defender. Time to dig into more of Windows Defender.
