Playback freezing and/or not playing [Solved]

Greetings,

I am having some significant playback issues with Media Center.  I was using MC 27, and then upgraded to MC 28, but the problem was//is identical with both versions.

When I attempt to play an audio file (individually, via an album, or via a playlist), playback will typically begin with no issues.  Then, after several songs, playback freezes.  No audio plays and the player interface appears frozen, with the time stopped in the middle of a song.  The type of file does not seem to matter: .flac, .mp3, .ogg, etc.  MC responds when I STOP, and usually will resume playing when PLAY is pressed again.  However, it occasionally hangs up (and will not play) and says "buffering" when I attempt to resume playback or play a new audio file.

MC is running on Windows 10 and I configured Windows Defender as instructed.  I then disabled Windows Defender completely.  The above issue was the same in both instances.

What kind of files are you playing?  What are you playing them to?  How is it connected?

I am playing audio files: mostly .flac, with some other files types as well (.mp3, .ogg, .mpc).  All of the files are stored locally.

They are playing to a receiver: an Onkyo TX-RZ900.

The receiver is connected to the computer by an HDMI cable.

What happens if you select Direct Sound in audio settings?

Turn off any DSP.

Switched to Direct Sound and made sure all DSP were off...a couple of hours in and so far, so good!
