Can't upgrade to 28
« on: July 27, 2021, 10:10:11 am »

This is serious..... This machine has 23,24,25,26, and 27 on it, and I finally decided to install 28. It gets to the part where it says "Upgrading Version" and hangs. Disk usage for C goes to 100%. Nothing happens. The install box says not responding. I let it go for 30 minutes. Finally had to kill the install process.
I have tried many things including deinstalling 27 (trying to get rid of a previous versions so it would not stop there). It still hangs at upgrading.
I tried to reinstall 27 so I could at least go back to where I was. It also hangs at Upgrading and disk usage stays at 100 percent.  I read up on Windows antivirus here, and set many exclusions as well as disabling Windows antivirus entirely for the install. Still hangs.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I really thought someone here would know. I figured I was not alone. I guess I have (had) a unique problem with MC. Not one comment... usually lots of folks comment when I ask a question. Usually very quickly, and usually with a solution that works. Not this time.
The choice? Give up on MC, or give up on the PC and rebuild it. A hard choice but we rely on our media, and MC had been down for over a day!! :)

I had to format the machine and start over. That fixed it (of course), but a way too radical a thing to do to stay with the latest version of MC. I lost all my other programs and settings.

I have two machines, one just for music in the man cave, it took 28 no problem... but the main machine, no matter what I did or how I did it, the install of 28 would stop responding at "Upgrading Version".

The main machine does video, including HDR, which was really tough to set up. I wonder if that broke it?

Have you tried redownloading MC28 from this topic?

Also if you're trying to install the 64-bit version of Media Center 28, make sure your Windows OS is actually 64-bit and not 32-bit. If all else fails, try the 32-bit build instead. Otherwise, this really sounds like an antivirus/antimalware/security application messing with the installer in some way.

What were you using for "security" software?

Did you fully configure Windows Defender?

What version of Windows?  Was it 64 bit?

also... part of the upgrade process copies your thumbnail files from your previous installation to your new one. Depending on the size of your library, the thumbnails can run to several GBs of data, which can take some time to copy over, as well as the possible need to download the Edge stuff from Microsoft, more time there... though I would have expected that 30 minutes would be ample time for both, worth bearing in mind.

Anything special about your setup that might interfere with those two processes?

I always get the latest version there. It is the only one I tried.
It's 64
I agree antivirus or some such, the reset of windows made it happy again

The library on this machine is huge, I did think that maybe I was just copying stuff during the upgrade process, but it also was low on space, less that 20 gigs free of 240.
I do believe a rebuild or whatever helps a machine work at it's best, I was just afraid of all the work. Not too bad. I save a backup of the library on the server, and back it up several times a week.  On shutdown. It is working fine now. Shoulda have done it a year ago.. :)
