Router went South
« on: March 28, 2003, 03:22:27 pm »

This week, we had a hardware failure.  It set us back about a week.

Our main router runs on Linux.  It's been up the better part of a year, and it has a Raid controller.  We run Raid 5, so in theory, any one of the three drives can fail and we're still OK.

This week the controller said it thought that two drives were bad.

There was a lot of head scratching and the corporate wallet was cracked open.  Three new drives, a new motherboard.  In the end, we won.

Pictures of the recovery are here.  Bob is sitting.  John Gateley (our penguin-in-residence) is in the door.

My favorite picture is the one of the rescue machine itself with all 3 drives connected.  Bob willing the data off them.

at the looks of DSC00058.JPG you really should put a case around all the wires and hardware, it kind of keeps everything together, nice, neat and orderly

That machine was used just for the recovery.  The real machine has more sheet metal.

Life in J. Riverville without Source Safe (the database of all our source code) wasn't too happy.

On the up side, I'm a lot better at Shelf Ball now.

I think Nikolay bought 20 acres somewhere in Nevada and like 8 imitation Rolex watches for $12 on e-Bay.

Anyway, glad order has been restored.

I'll think twice before I use the server rack as a go-kart when nobody is around at night again.
