Playing MP4 files - "file not found" [Solved]
« on: December 05, 2021, 04:37:47 pm »

Sometimes when opening MP4 files on my Mac mini running MACOS Monterey I simply get a "file not found" warning after clicking on the file and nothing else happens.  Other applications such as Quicktime and VLC can open these MP4 files, so they are legit files, but for some reason only JRiver cannot open them.

Any ideas?  Can't provide any logs because nothing else happens.  ?  I provided a picture of what I get when I load some MP4 files.

Not much to see there.
How are you opening these files?
Are they in your MC library?

Open Media File and then I just click on the mp4 file I want to play.  I don't keep video files in my media library because they're on external ssd drives that I don't plug in all that often.

Is the drive actually mounted?
MC can't play then through the file chooser if they aren't on a mounted drive.

Yes, it mounts automatically in MacOs. As I said, other video programs can play the file.  Its only JRiver that balks at it.  ?

Just tested what you are doing and it works fine for me. Monterey Mac Mini.

Please try again and Log it. It will show the attempt to open the file in the log.

Here's my log (the crossed out parts are my name or other identifiers).  The file is one I use for one of my classes.  Again this same file opens fine in programs like Quicktime and VLC.

Says it can't open the file.
Does MC have access to the device/folder?
System Preferences->Privacy and Security->Files and Folders->Media Center 28
Removable volumes and/or Network volumes permissions enabled??

If that still doesn't work you could enable full disk access to MC temporarily to test.

Why are these files being added without a path? That seems suspicious and likely the cause why it just can't find them.
It looks like its somehow splitting apart the path into multiple pieces and trying to import them individually, which of course won't work.

Just look at the three distinct AddFile lines visible in that screenshot, you can see one with a long base path, then one just adding something called "Full Documentary" with no further path or filename, and then the third call for "Biography.mp4" - again without any path. Something is breaking the path on Macs here.

Should opening the file
Biography.mp4
have included the full path?
Perhaps it's the ? in the path

The question mark in the filename is causing all the trouble on this file?

Did you try renaming it?

Can you play a file with no punctuation in the path?
