Missing cd's in YADB are present in CDDB
« on: March 07, 2003, 05:28:29 am »

I used to have my cd's in another database that looks up information with CDDB. Almost every CD of mine was found.
I was impressed by Media Jukebox and I registered.
It is working great with mp3's!
Now I'm updating my MC database with my audio cd's and I notice it's getting the information from YADB (a database by JRiver). A lot of my CD's are not in YADB!
I don't like typing all the information I already have in my older database. I would like MC to go to CDDB when a CD is not found in YADB. Information retrieved could be used to update YADB.

Another way of using my older CDDB information would be a copy/paste. In that case it would be nice if the name column in MC could be selected to paste information for all songs of a cd in one action.
Copying every song separately is a hell of job.

You'll find most CD's in YADB.  If you don't find one, please enter it and submit it (right click on the CD).

CDDB raised their price 600% so we started over.  Check www.yadb.com for more info.

Jim,

I don't know about raising prices by CDDB. I still get the CD information for free. Anyway it would be nice if MC would have the possibility to past information copied from my database with retrieved CDDB CD's.
I would like to select just the name field column to past the information of all song titles of a cd.
MC doesn't let me select colums!

What if all of us MC/MJ users suddenly submitted ALL of the (properly tagged) tracks on our hard drives to YADB?  That would most certainly add to the accuracy of the database pretty quickly.

I've been submitting everything I have as soon as I'm sure it's tagged correctly.  If I can help others by submitting my collection it'll make everything easier.

Jim means that the cost for J River to include CDDB functionality in MJ/MC went up significantly, which would mean that you would have to pay more to buy MJ/MC.

Great what you do. I do the same , and we are not the onlyones.
But you upload the tracs data base of YADB.
Not the cds data base.

To upload to the cd data base without hassle , look at my post

Ok, I now use my old software to get the data from CDDB. MC uses the data that was written to cdplayer.ini to import my audio cd's.
I select all tracks in MC and with a right click I choose TOOLS\Submit Track Info to YADB.
A message appears: Only submit files to YADB if all of the tag information is filled in correctly. Submit files now?
I choose yes and a analyzing/submitting  process starts.
I suppose this is the right way to do it, if not, I'll hope someone tells me how I should do it right.

To verify if the submiited data was available in YADB I removed the cd from the MC database and I removed the data in cdplayer.ini.
I retry to get the data from YADB and MC tells me it can't find the data in YADB. Is there a certain time that I have to wait to check if submitting data has successful?

Is there a way to search the YADB database?

if they have been riped to files then there is no way, if you are looking at the cd, and all the info is inputted, you can then right click on the cd drive in the left tree, and use submit to CD database.

KingSparta,

With MC 9.0.131 I have noticed MC isn't looking in cdplayer.ini like it did before.
So it is no longer possible to submit audio cd's (found in CDDB and written to cdplayer.ini by other software) without typing all information.
Why isn't MC looking at the cdplayer.ini anymore?
Is it a bug?

This discussion somewhat overlaps the "yadb is too sparse" thread, so I wanted to make one more post and then I'll shut up on this issue.

I certainly understand why J River dumped CDDB -- not only did Gracenote raise CDDB prices, but I believe they now prohibit dual use of CDDB and another service (which is how MJ8 works).

But I still don't understand why MC doesn't use freedb (which was the starting point for yadb).   Perhaps freedb has some technical deficiencies, but its success rate is very high (EAC uses it, and knows about every one of my CDs that yadb doesn't yet know about).

MC9 is a sweet product, and I hope it becomes popular.  But I doubt that this will happen if it's released with yadb in its current state, because (given current success statistics at [urlhttp://www.yadb.com/stats.html[/url]), roughly 1 out of 3 CDs will not be recognized.  Reviewers and customers will quickly notice this and be unhappy.  They will not have the same attitude as the enthusiasts who test the beta and converse in this forum.

It may be that an important J River goal is to develop a commercial alternative to CDDB, and the company is willing to sacrifice some MC9 convenience and therefore popularity to achieve this.  I do not mean this as a negative comment - it's a business decision that might well make sense.

But as an MC user, I sure would like to see freedb as a supported alternative, at least until yadb catches up.  (Yes, there's a "catch 22" in there, but perhaps there could be some incentive offered to those who contribute to yadb.)

they always did, MJ8 only had both in there for a short time (just a few builds).

My assumption is that this is twofold:

(a) Control, "we're never going to let an outside source control our destiny again".

(b) Development cycle, "focus on one database keeps things simple".

Just a guess however.
