Will MC29 Solve My Problems?
« on: May 03, 2022, 10:04:59 am »

Hi, I have been running MC18 for years on a Baetis Audio media server running Windows 7. I understand my setup is relatively ancient now, but I went through a divorce and home theater got put on the back burner for a long time.

Now that I am back to using JRiver, I notice 2 problems - First, MC18 no longer automatically downloads backgrounds, movie posters, and metadata about new movies that I rip from discs...it seems like those databases it pulled from are no longer supported? And secondly, some new movie rips (MKV files) will not play on MC18, but they DO play using VLC media player. Other new mkv rips WILL play using MC18. I don't know why some mkv files play but others don't...? Will upgrading to the current MC29 build solve these 2 problems for me?

I must mention that I am NOT an IT person, so PLEASE keep your responses in layman's terms...I am just a regular Home Theater enthusiast. Thank you!

Best way to find out is to try Media Center 29. There's a 30 day fully featured free trial you can try.

Short: yes!

If you want to be sure that your specific mkv can be played, run the trial version.

In laymens terms...  MC 29 will solve your two problems.  There is no easier way to find out than downloading, installing and testing.  There's no migration required... all automatic.  If it doesn't solve the mkv problems, you have other issues, that I'm sure folks here can troubleshoot.

Hi there
I am the owner and CEO of Baetis Audio. I would be delighted to help you properly. This is best done by doing a remote access session and a phone call. I would be able to see what your Baetis is showing you on the screen and we can talk over Skype/Facetime/WhatsApp. I can look at your system, implement updates, hear about the issues you are having. We can put in MC29 trial version and see if we can fix the problems. Send me your email in a private message and we can arrange something when it works for us both. I'm on eastern Canada time.

My guess is that the older mkvs cannot be found. That might be because they were stored on an external disk, which if plugged into a different USB slot than it was originally, may be showing up as a different drive letter. But if I can take a look at your system, we'll get a proper diagnosis.

THANK YOU!!  I will contact you soon. I'm glad you saw my post and offered to help. I have an early Baetis Audio Revolution media server and it has been fantastic for my home theater and high resolution multi-channel audio needs for years, although I realize its getting a little outdated. I appreciate your help!

Thanks Badger, I will be upgrading to MC29 with the help of FitBrit at Baetis Audio. Which is appreciated because my MC18 version is SO OLD that it will NOT automatically migrate over to MC29...the library has to be manually transferred over from what I understand. I think the auto migrate feature was introduced in a later version. Anyway, thanks for your response!

Oh.. I hope you and Fitbit get it straightened out.  I can't remember the last time I had to re-import after an upgrade...  but I guess MC18 was several years ago.  Good luck!

I think we have a resolution to all the issues.
They were caused mostly by the system still being on Windows 7, with even that needing a LOT of updates.

Since MC18, a lot has changed with video rendering. We now have JRVR and Theater View uses difference resources to render too (OpenGL?). An update of OP's computer to Win 10 was desirable, but the ailing system wasn't even able to create a Windows Installation Media disk; we did this on another PC.

I backed up the MC library, program installers and any user files that would be nice to have in migrating to Win 10. When we did the upgrade, I was expecting to not be able to do it successfully without a full reformat. To our surprise the upgrade to Win 10 went very smoothly, and voila, after a little tweaking all was well. JRVR was able to run on a second gen i5, improving the quality of the image and removing judder once automatic refresh rate changing was implemented. MadVR on the other hand didn't result in a smooth playback experience.
