Windows 11 error
« on: May 18, 2022, 11:32:33 am »

JRiver produces distortion and static in a fresh install of Window 11 while other programs, like ffplay, work fine. Switching the output to bluetooth gives the same result. The event viewer has a number of entries like the below. Ideas?

Try using MC's DSP Studio > Output Settings to force everything to 48K.

Try the 32 bit version of MC.

What are you playing?  To what device?  Details might help.

The PC is an Intel NUC released in the first quarter of this year, a NUC11TNKi70Z manufactured in March.

The default sound output is by USB to a JDS Labs Atom DAC+ to a 2.0 amp/speaker setup. No films are played on this PC. But as I mentioned in the first message, the results are the same when bluetooth output is used instead of the Atom DAC. The Atom DAC was just tested on the PC being replaced and still works fine on that Win10 machine.

The files are a mix of stereo flacs, some CD density and some from hdtracks.com at 96/24 density.

>Try using MC's DSP Studio > Output Settings to force everything to 48K.

Makes no difference.

>Try the 32 bit version of MC.

Makes no difference.

Upon closing JRiver, there was a pop up saying JRiver was already running. It's the second time I have seen the message. Upon start up, JRiver is set to start nothing. So I'm uncertain why some part of it would already be running. But I have seen the message only twice. The problem is always here.

Are you using MC 29.0.50?

Try setting Audio to Direct Sound and WASAPI.

Actually, in your first reply you mostly answered my questions. You have not heard of this before. The fix is not as simple as installing some old Windows feature like .NET 3.5. This is new and a one-off.

After letting ffplay run for a few hours, it developed the same problem but without any informative entry in event viewer. It's getting worse. Now even the Windows system sounds are distorted on boot.

I'm thinking this is a hardware issue. I'll start an RMA. Thanks for the quick replies.

Having similar problem on freshly installed Windows 11 - MC 29.0.50 (also tried MC 29.0.62 from latest channel) 64bit. Sound is OK, however application crashes randomly (during opening Options dialog or clicking through different sections, or opening DSP Studio. Crash never occurred during regular playback.)

Installed plugins - Sound ID Reference (by Sonarworks), tried to disable
Output - tried WASAPI, ASIO Fireface 802, ASIO MADIface USB, still crashing.
Older versions - tried also 28.x.x on different Windows 11 machine, still crashing

Crash diagnostics from Windows Event viewer:

Faulting application name: Media Center 29.exe, version: 29.0.62.0, time stamp: 0x62a8850c
Faulting module name: out_main.dll, version: 29.0.62.0, time stamp: 0x62a884d8

If you haven't done so please configure Windows Defender.  Don't use any other antivirus software. There is a thread here on Windows defender..
