Crash when click on "Options" or "Tools"
« on: June 17, 2022, 02:18:43 pm »

This happens quasi-randomly.  Everything's fine for weeks and, then, all of a sudden while playing tracks or not, MC 29 crashes if I click on "Options" or "Tools."  Perhaps other operations will induce the crash but I have not tried them.  When that does happen and I reopen MC, it will show the same behavior for 10 to 20mins.  After that, back to normal.

All Defender exclusions are in place.
Two of todays dumps are attached.

OK.  42 views so far and no comments.  Don't worry about insulting me with the obvious.  Doesn't anything come to mind?

No reply usually means nobody knows.  You've got a strange problem.  Antivirus is always a good guess.  Microwave ovens or something equally absurd are another.

It's crashing enumerating kernel streaming devices.  I'm not sure why or if we could do anything better.

Thanks.  Can you tell me what that means?  Enumerating kernel streaming devices?  I am not using Kernel Streaming, afaik.

I have two DACs in use and both are using ASIO drivers (DIYINHK USB Audio Driver v4.67 with Okto and exaSound's latest with s88).

Seems reminiscent of https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=132660.0

Well, it worked until yesterday and then the crashing reappeared.  Any other ideas?

Make sure you're using the latest build.  Then please post a crash dump if it still happens.  Thanks.

OK.  Updated from v29.0.65 to v29.0.67 and got the crash immediately!

We'll try something else in build 69.  If that doesn't work, we could maybe add an advanced option to not use Kernel Streaming.  Sorry that you're the lucky one having this problem!  I haven't seen it on any other machine.

I've had it very rarely on another machine.  While its a bit of a pain with this one, it doesn't get in the way of music playback unless I want to change something and I don't do that too often.

My only insight is that it happens after/during a previous change and continues for less than a minute of restarting/crashing before settling down.  Could it be some interaction with JRiver updating/propagating changes behind the scenes?

I also don't recall seeing this before.  Crashes have not been a common problem in general for a while.  Most are related to video drivers or antivirus software.

Understood.
1.  I've already executed all the steps to keep Defender at bay.
2.  I have only MB video with a stock install.
3.  There is an apparent temporal correlation with immediately prior reconfiguration/setup operations.
That's all I've got.

Motherboard video still uses a driver.  The BIOS can also be upgraded.

The bottom line is that something is probably not right with your hardware.

I think I suggested unplugging any devices.

Since it's kernel streaming, upgrading all your sound drivers might also help.  You could disable devices you don't use.

OK.  I appreciate all the comments.

ASUS utility reports that no drivers nor the BIOS need be updated.  I can force the latter if you recommend it.

The bottom line is that something is probably not right with your hardware.

The only connected devices are those in use with MC.  I will, however, try disconnecting one at a time and see what happens.

I will check the sound drivers.

I'll send you a build tomorrow that should work.  It could crash once but then it turns off so won't again.  Cheers.

Ah!  Installed it and, yes, it crashed once.  However, no matter how I try I cannot get it to crash again.............so far.   ;D

What happens is that we turn off kernel streaming when enumerating and only turn it back on if it works.

So if you look at:
Options > General > Advanced > Support kernel streaming audio output
It will now be off.

I still don't know why it's crashing on your system, but at least we can work around it.

Cheers.
