MC v29 Stuttering every 2 seconds
« on: August 03, 2022, 09:24:35 am »

Hi

I have just installed MC29 on a Linux Mint v20.3 machine with an intel i7 6 core processor and 32GB RAM, with the intel 630 integrated graphics. I have tried to play various videos (standard resolution) from within MC29 and whether they play in a window or full screen, they stutter about very 2 seconds continually (HD seems about the same too).

I have tried both the JRVR and legacy renderer but both do it (I notice madVR does not seem to be present any more).

If I play any of these files using VLC or Celluloid they play fine...nice and smooth.

Any ideas about what i can try?

Thanks

madVR is Windows only.

My guess is that it's related to either the open-source Mesa integrated graphics drivers in Linux Mint or it's possibly related to the desktop environment (Cinnamon in the default Mint download) or it could even be the Mesa drivers are out of date since Linux Mint 20.x is based against Ubuntu LTS and doesn't ship the latest and greatest Mesa drivers and Linux kernels with graphic driver improvements. And to be fair, the drivers for Intel's integrated graphics really aren't known to be that good on Windows, and it might be a little worse on Linux through Mesa, I guess it depends how old it is.

I think you can switch to Vulkan in JRVR, you might try that, but it may not make a difference.

Thanks for the thoughts, though I cant find the Vulkan setting to which you refer?

Its strange that both VLC and Celluloid both play the same videos smoothly though - wouldn't they be using the same driver?

Choose JRVR as the video renderer.  It has some settings you can try.

Are the files local or via network/wifi? Try copying them locally to see if it's a network/buffering issue.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I am using JRVR, I have tried various settings but nothing really works and so I need to watch movies in VLC or similar to get them to play smoothly,

The moves are stored on a 12 disc array using gigabit switches and even if I copy to the local drive I get the same issue = so it is not the network
