New Build Sound issues
« on: August 29, 2022, 10:35:33 am »

Hello Everyone,

I built a machine just for JRiver.

Intel 10900K i9 CPU
16GB of Ram
Nvidia 3060TI GPU.
Windows 10 for now.

After installing JRiver I went into settings>Audio and I enabled Bitstream to just passthrough all audo to let my Arcam AVR20 play and decode it.

When I click on a movie to watch I get an error that says sound format not supported.

What am I missing here?   Does anyone know how to passthrough audio on windows 10 and JRiver?

Thanks,

Aaron

It's usually pretty straight forward under settings... audio in Windows 10.  Choose to output audio to your Nvidia 3060.  I find that the speaker options don't seem to matter (in windows) if you'r going through HDMI to MC.  Then set MC audio device to the Nvidia (high definition) (WASAPI)... and then bitstreaming (check on HDMI).  This is what works for me anyway.  What is the audio format for the movie that you're testing?  If you still have problems, maybe try different options under speaker setup in windows (5.1, 7.2, stereo, custom).  I leave mine at stereo and I still get DTS and TruHD.

This post is very much in line with my recent post.   I am also having issues with bitstreaming of truehd.    On a previous PC and earlier build (maybe 26?) I had no problems.   Now I am having very similar issues.  I do wonder if the new version of somehow less tolerant of poor sources than older versions.

It's probably a difference in settings.

Above information is good.

A couple of other things, in DSP Studio, Output Format see if the checkmark is on.  Try it both ways.  If that doesn't work, try matching the channels to your speaker configuration.  Stereo will still play stereo.

The other thing is output encoding.  Some wetups can't convert certain sample rates (88,200 Hz for instance or those that are too high).  Try changing the 88,200 to 44,100 or 96,000.

Try output encoding to None or Dolby Digital.

There's a sweet spot somewhere.  You just have to find it.  Do it step by step, one thing at a time.

Good luck

So a few weeks ago I was testing JRiver on a Inuc PC by intel and had this problem thinking it was the built in GPU and Sound card.

So I ordered all the high end parts mentioned above thinking there is no way I will have this same problem with this hardware and of course I was wrong.

In testing I did setup and installed Kodi with DSPlayer and MadVR with Audio Bitstreaming and everything works perfectly.

So this tells me this is something to do with JRiver29.  I did consider downloading JRiver 28 or a older version of 29 to see if it was still happening.  Has anyone tried any older versions?

On another note has anyone test JRiver on Ubuntu and know if MadVr works in the Linux version?

madVR is Windows only, as it uses DirectShow and isn't available for non-Windows platforms.

I have tried every configuration and nothing I do will allow bitstreaming HDMI.   DTS-HD is the movie I am testing and I did check formats of the card and that is a supported format.

If anyone has any ideas on how to make this work please share.

Thanks,

Then set MC audio device to the Nvidia (high definition) (WASAPI)... and then bitstreaming (check on HDMI).

Ok so this configuration worked.  However I wanted to ask the difference between Nvidia Direct vs Nvidia WASAPI?  Pro and Cons?  Also what exactly is WASAPI?

Thanks for your help.

"Direct Sound" is the general system that the O/S uses to process audio, it mixes together all audio from all applications on the O/S and resamples it to the rate selected in Control Panel.
"WASAPI" Windows Audio Session Application Programming Interface is a means for any application to take exclusive control of the audio output there by bypassing the O/S general sound mixer, and allowing a bit perfect output.

So WASAPI is by far the better and preferred method to output quality audio along with ASIO.
