When I rip a cd to FLAC, I get the resulting file twice: once where I expect it to be in the folder at \artist\album\ and the other in the root directory. Both files are fine. I'm not sure if it always happens, but it definitely happens often. I don't want a huge list of duplicate files in the root directory.

Is there a setting that's controlling this? Is there a way to make it stop?

I'm surprised. When I asked this question, I expected one of the many JRiver wizards to say, C'mon dummy, just change this setting that you've enabled. Or, if not, a lot of other folks would say they were having the same problem. I didn't expect 63 folks to read this and neither know the answer or admit to the same problem.

So, I guess that means it isn't happening to everybody and must relate to something I'm doing. I'll go through all the FLAC settings again and see if I can find a setting that I might have misunderstood and set incorrectly.

Check your Audio settings under Option > File Location

Rip with default FLAC encoder settings.

Under file locations Audio I get

E:New FLAC\
Folder rule: [Artist]\[Album]\
Filemame rule: [Artist] - [Name]

This is correct. Interestingly, the extraneous second files use the [Track no.] - [Name] rule for Filename. They get the top rule correctly, but skip the Folder rule.

I have always used the FLAC encoder at the default options. There isn't much to change.

Why is there a red dot to the right of E:\New FLAC\ ?  Try editing it.

So if you rip a song by Paul Simon, off of Graceland, you get a file in each of these locations:

E:\New FLAC\<file here>
E:\New FLAC\Paul Simon\Graceland\<file here>

Is that correct?  If so, it kinda seems like MC initially does not have the Album and Artist information and later *does* have it.  But that doesn't make any sense...

sorry about the red dot, Jim. Just getting used to Microsoft's new screen clipping tool. I accidentally added that when I right-clicked on it to copy it. Definitely not there in the original.

And, yes, Brian, that's exactly what happens. And it doesn't make any sense to me either.

A new user, just guessing - is there a "clean-up files after you rip" setting somewhere that is still unchecked?

All the entries in my Recently ripped give the correct file location(\Artist\Album\) and I'm pretty sure they always do. I review Recently Ripped carefully to make sure that they have cover art and that multi-disc sets will line up correctly, etc. and I would notice if they were duped.

I've already cleaned out the dups from my last CD ripping session, but I'll make sure the next time.

And, as I said earlier, I don't think it always happens, just often happens.
