This is indeed weird, and might need more details about your setup like OS version, audio output driver being used, DAC type, if WDM driver is being used or not if using Windows, if you're using any DSP Studio > Output Format settings options, if doing any sort of PCM to DSD or vice versa conversion, etc.
The immediate thing that potentially comes to mind which is easy to test for... assuming you're using Windows, maybe something running in the system background is causing spikes in DPC latency? This could cause issues with dropouts, crackling, etc. when listening to audio. Using the free version of
LatencyMon might help informing you what's causing it, if indeed DPC latency spikes are to blame. Basically install and run LatencyMon then purposely reproduce the issue in MC27 and see if LatencyMon reports any issues.
