how to clear navigation history to fix backup bloat?
« on: January 18, 2023, 03:27:36 am »

I backup my database a couple times a day.

A few days ago backups started taking a few seconds longer so I investigated.

My backup file size jumped from 50MB (which has been roughly stable for months) to 70MB.

I did not make any changes to my library to warrant this size increase so became concerned.

Looking in the backup zip file I see the size increase occurred in the file "User Settings.ini".

It looks to me like the section within User Settings called Navigation History has massively expanded with what looks like useless data to me. Uncompressed the User Settings.ini file increased by 80MB!

I'm not sure, but I think this size jump occurred on the day I used Theatre View for the first time in over a year.

Assuming this is the culprit, how can I clear the navigation history to get my backups back to normal?

I see keys in the registry called "Navigation History 1000- 1010". Can I safely delete these? Or is there a better way?

Could you make the backup available to matt at jriver so I could take a look?

My registry has a few "Navigation History" entries, but they're not really that big.

Thanks.

Matt helped me resolve this.

There is no problem with MC.

Some user actions with large libraries can create huge temporary histories which get saved in backups.

I closed all my tabs and waited a while and the history shrank back to its normal size.
