Play behavior
« on: January 21, 2023, 06:46:15 pm »

(I wasn't able to find the answer to this in previous posts or wiki...)

Here's what happens:

1. I play a whole album in Playing Now.
2. It finishes and stops.
3. I come back later and press Play.
4. Only the last track in Playing Now plays.  :(

Can MC somehow instead...

A) Be set to always start from the top of Playing Now when hitting Play from a Stop condition? or,
B) Be set to do 'A' but only when the last track in Playing Now is highlighted/selected? In other words, MC would assume Playing Now has been played all the way through because the last track played is the last track in Playing Now, and therefore start playing from the top.

Back in the day, CD players had one of these behaviours depending on model. If you played a whole CD, then it stopped naturally, then you pressed Play, it would play the whole CD again from the top -- not only the last track. Some models would 'remember' what track you pressed Stop on, and would resume play starting with that track if you came back later and pressed Play.

It would be wonderful to have access to at least 'A' behaviour in MC, with 'B' being a great bonus option too!

Thank you.

Take a look at Tools > Options > General > Behavior.

Hi Jim:

I did. The available options don't cover what I described.

I reviewed this again today. MC doesn't just play again from the top after an album has played through and stopped.

I played with the different Behavior options, but no affect. Not a surprise: the available options don't exactly apply.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks.

Whether you play a single album or an expression driven long playlist, once the cycle has completed (and stopped), I 100% agree that returning to the 1st track afterword is completely logical.  Why leave it on the last track? Why indeed!

Seems like this would be a very simple change for Matt to make, and outside of the inevitable oddball, I gotta believe there would be near unanimity to incorporate this.

There is a way of getting MC to restart playing a full album or a playlist from the 1st track in the playing now window after the last track has played - all you have to do is press the Repeat Button and select "Repeat Playing Now" which will keep repeating the album/playlist until you tell MC to switch repeat off.

Except continuous repeat play is not what the OP is asking for:
1. I play a whole album in Playing Now.
2. It finishes and stops.
3. I come back later and press Play.

4. Only the last track in Playing Now plays.

I just tried to see if setting the "Stop After x tracks" by setting the number of tracks equal to the number of tracks in playing now while "Repeat Playng Now" was on would get MC to stop after the last track but advance the selected track highlight onto the 1st Track in the list

Unfortunately after the last track finished playng MC simply repeated the playlist without stoping after the last track

Nor did setting  "Stop After x tracks" to 2 work

It looks as if "Repeat Playing Now" ignores any "Stop After" settings

Thanks folks.

And perhaps Matt could call the new play behavior setting: "CD player style". ;)

I'll make the next build loop to the start of Playing Now when it stops at the end.  I always repeat Playing Now, so have never had this.  Thanks.

Cool - Returning to the beginning of the playlist after completing it represents intuitive/expected behavior IMO.  And as usual, Matt is da' man with lightning speed updates - Thank you Matt!

Also thanks to English Tiger - I'm now aware of MC functions I never knew existed - that there are a whole slew of options available for "Stop". For others who may be similarly unaware, it's not in the regular options/settings window, but in the toolbar menu Player/More Stop sub-menu. Very nice! I seldom use that particular menu, so I was unaware/never noticed those options.

Thanks Matt!

I sometimes like the occasional periods of silence which become interspersed in one's listening life when albums (or playlists, etc.) naturally end, and require you to attend and intervene with intent in order to get the music flowing again.  It was part of that 'culture' of LP/cassette/CD which kind of 'paced out' our listening lives. All-repeat-all-the-time can sometimes lead to music fatigue, and/or prematurely tiring of the same album/playlist/artist. The periodic stopped/silent intervals sort of 'force' one to go back and consider anew what one wants to listen to next.
